Stephen Fleming: Ben Stokes is a 'champion under pressure'

After his Player-of-the-Match performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup final, Ben Stokes guided England through a tricky chase to win the 2022 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan. Stokes scored his first T20I fifty to lead England to glory in Melbourne, and former New Zealand captain and current Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming called him a “champion under pressure” who is “forging a career where he is there at key moments.””He’s [Stokes] a big presence, he’s a big personality and he’s a big winner,” Fleming said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out show. “And that’s pretty key ingredients when you talk about a good to great player.”Related

“What he is doing is forging a career where he is there at key moments. He has won Test matches on the last day single-handedly, he was there today. He has been in some unbelievable battles and you’d back him most times to win them. So his temperament is so tested, and it comes through every time that you’ve got to say he’s a champion under pressure. And there’s not many that really rise to that occasion or on that occasion as much as he seems to do.While there were questions over Stokes’ role in this England T20 line-up at the start of the tournament, he ended up playing a crucial innings in a must-win group game against Sri Lanka to qualify for the semi-finals. And in the final England were 32 for 2 when Stokes walked in to bat in the fourth over. Even as he saw Jos Buttler depart two overs later, Stokes formed partnerships with Harry Brook and Moeen Ali to ensure there was no slip-up in the chase of 138. He remained unbeaten on 52 off 49 balls.”He [Stokes] gets into that position where he is the main man and everyone around him feeds off that,” Fleming said. “You saw at the end what it meant to those other players as they ran out. They were really dependent on him being there and doing that job and he has done it yet again for England.”Dawid Malan, who usually plays the anchor role for England, missed the semi-final and the final of the World Cup with an injury and former Australia allrounder Tom Moody said that his absence may have ended up helping Stokes’ game.”I think that what Stokes did today is exactly what Malan has done for this England side for the last 2-3 years,” Moody said. “He has created that real nice balance where he can play that measured innings with the power around him. They’ve got natural power-hitters that are prepared to go after it and back themselves when they are given clear roles. But when they are stacked up with Stokes and Malan at 3 and 4, it nearly cluttered that middle order when they had that depth and power that they had.”So I think if anything, it’s really unfortunate for Dawid Malan to have the injury, the timing of that injury. But it just created that open space for Ben Stokes to be Ben Stokes the T20 cricketer.”

Taide ton, Rathod 91 steady Vidarbha against Rest of India

Vidarbha opener Atharva Taide scored an unbeaten 118 on the first day of the Irani Cup in Nagpur, putting his team on course for a strong first-innings total against Rest of India. He wasHe began the day alongside Aman Mokhade, who hit four boundaries during his 27-ball 19, before nicking an Akash Deep delivery in the eighth over of the match. Akash Deep – returning to competitive cricket for the first time since his Test tour of England – found success at either end of the day’s play. He was the most economical bowler for Rest of India, going at just 2.50 across his 14 overs.Akash Deep capped off the day by having Vidarbha captain Akshay Wadkar caught behind for 5 in the 82nd over. Vidarbha were reduced to 275 for 5, and Taide batted out the remaining overs alongside Yash Thakur to take Vidarbha to stumps on 280 for 5.Earlier in the day, Rajasthan allrounder Manav Suthar had threatened to roll them over for much less. Fresh off an eight-for against Australia A in Lucknow, he took back-to-back wickets in his first over – the 23rd of the innings. First, he cleaned up Dhruv Shorey (18) while the batter was playing down the wrong line, before he had Danish Malewar caught behind just three balls later. The latter was the second of three catches Ishan Kishan completed behind the stumps.Akash Deep impressed on his return to competitive cricket•PTI

At 80 for 3, 25-year-old Yash Rathod walked in. He stopped the slide and continued his good form from the Duleep Trophy, where he had scored 374 runs in five innings at 124.67. Rathod and Taide batted through the second session, and looked all set to bat till stumps. However, after having hit Suthar for a six just the previous ball in the 74th over, Rathod skipped down the track for the second time in a row and holed out to mid-off on 91 against the run of play. The dismissal ended a 184-run partnership for the fourth wicket. While Akash Deep snared the fifth wicket before the close of play, Taide’s presence in the middle will be essential to Vidarbha’s hopes on the second day. In case an outright result cannot be achieved over five days, the team with the first-innings lead will be declared the winner.Vidarbha will thus be looking to bat deep in their first Irani Cup outing since the 2018-19 edition, which they won through a first-innings lead as well.

Wayne Rooney insists he was faster than Cristiano Ronaldo in Man Utd training as he reveals shock identity of Red Devils' second-most rapid player

Wayne Rooney has surprisingly claimed he was faster than Cristiano Ronaldo in Manchester United training. The pair formed one of the Premier League’s deadliest attacking duos, who kept defenders on their toes under Sir Alex Ferguson from 2004 to 2009. Together, they fired United to three league titles and a Champions League crown.

Ronaldo’s relentless pursuit of physical excellence

Ronaldo has long been regarded as the gold standard for physical excellence. From his early days at Old Trafford to his record-breaking years with Real Madrid, Juventus, and now at Al-Nassr, the Portuguese icon has dedicated his entire career to maintaining peak condition. Right from his diet and sleep routine to his gym workouts, he has meticulously planned every detail to preserve his elite athleticism well into his forties. His commitment has allowed him to continue scoring at the highest level while most players of his generation have long since retired. But Rooney’s claim sheds new light on those early United days, as the former forward claimed he had the edge over Ronaldo in the speed tests in the early days of their career.

AdvertisementAFPWhat were the speed test results at United?

According to Rooney, the results of the training ground sprint tests were definitive.

"We’d done tests at over 30 yards, I think it was, and I was topping that, and Owen Hargreaves was second," he claimed at .  "Owen was quicker than what people think. So yeah, I was, I was faster than that. But there are all different aspects in football. Cristiano obviously dribbling with the ball is really quick, Ryan Giggs dribbling with the ball. Some players seemed quicker with the ball and then without it as well."

Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand had previously claimed on his own podcast that Hargreaves was indeed one of the fastest, "He came into the training ground when he signed, and we done testing, and he blew everyone out of the water. He blew everyone away; we used to do like 10 yards, 20 yards, and he won every race."

Can Ronaldo reach 1000 career goals?

The relationship between Rooney and Ronaldo wasn’t always smooth sailing. The infamous flashpoint came during the 2006 World Cup quarterfinal, when Ronaldo was accused of encouraging the referee to send off Rooney for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho. The incident briefly strained their friendship, but upon returning to Manchester, the pair quickly reconciled.

While Rooney has long since hung up his boots, Ronaldo’s story is still being written. The 40-year-old superstar is now closing in on an extraordinary milestone of 1,000 career goals. After scoring in Al-Nassr’s recent 2-0 win over Al Hazm, Ronaldo’s tally sits at an incredible 950 goals. He extended his contract with the Saudi giants in June and committed to the club until 2027. At his current scoring rate, it’s almost inevitable that Ronaldo will break the 1,000-goal barrier. It will be a feat that would establish his status as the most prolific scorer in football history. Rooney, who has often snubbed Ronaldo in favour of Lionel Messi in the GOAT debate, however, was quick to back his former teammates to reach the milestone.

"100%.  He’s not retired before he’s caused thousands," he said. "It’d be great for him as well if he does that, and I’m sure over the next couple of years he’ll be playing with his son alongside him, so I think that’s a big thing as well for him."

GettyCan Ronaldo finally conquer Saudi Pro League?

Despite Ronaldo’s individual brilliance, his Al-Nassr side recently suffered a major blow as they crashed out of the King’s Cup following a shock 2-1 defeat to a 10-man Al-Ittihad. It was a frustrating night for Ronaldo and his teammates, but the season is far from over. Under the guidance of Jorge Jesus, Al-Nassr are dominating in the Saudi Pro League. They are currently at the top of the table with 18 points, three clear of Al-Taawoun and also a healthy eight points ahead of defending champions Al-Ittihad, the very side that dumped them out of the cup. Their next test comes this Saturday at home against Al Feiha, where Ronaldo will be eager to lead from the front and get his side back on track.

Vikramjit's 'lids off' moment caps Netherlands' record-breaking run

They’ve posted three of their four highest ODI totals in their last six matches, and along the way an exciting top-order talent has come of age

Firdose Moonda03-Jul-2023Coming into this World Cup Qualifier, Netherlands’ batters had only once scored two hundreds in one ODI series or tournament in the last 15 years. They’d done this at the 2011 World Cup, where Ryan ten Doeschate had made centuries against England and Ireland. They’ve done it once again now, thanks to Vikramjit Singh and Teja Nidamanuru. It may not immediately strike you as an achievement worth headlining but consider that the Netherlands squad came into this tournament with only one ODI century between them. Netherlands’ batters had only made 11 in their ODI history. You can see, then, why hundreds are much vaunted in their camp.”That’s one of our KPIs. It’s called “lids off,” which means someone needs to get a hundred in the game,” Vikramjit said at the post-match press conference following Netherlands’ 74 run win over Oman.Related

  • Vikramjit, Barresi help Netherlands thump Oman

The phrase refers to the way a batter typically celebrates a century: by removing their helmet (read: lid) and raising their bat, and it’s something that has been rare for Netherlands in the past. Before this World Cup Qualifier, the most recent Dutch batter to score a century was Nidamanuru – against Zimbabwe in March – and before that, no Dutch batter had raised his bat to three figures in more than nine years, since Wesley Baressi in 2014.Now, in the space of a week, the team has two hundreds and the latest one was scored by the batter who has been talked up as one of the most talented in the country. Vikramjit moved to the Netherlands as a child and was coached by his father before going through the age-group ranks. He had a reputation as an aggressive strokeplayer and a consistent contributor. He had only averaged 28.35 in 17 ODIs before this Qualifier, but it was notable that he had only been dismissed three times in single figures. He’d made three half-centuries but his highest score was only 65.It was clear he could get in and make a start; his challenge for this tournament was to keep going and convert. In Netherlands’ first match against Zimbabwe, he eased his way to 88 before miscuing a sweep shot straight to deep square leg. He was then out cheaply against USA, feeding a catch straight back to Ali Khan, but then got 30 and 37 against Nepal and West Indies respectively. He was dismissed by spinners on both occasions – pinned on the back foot by Sandeep Lamichhanne and then not getting to the pitch of a Roston Chase ball and slicing it to deep midwicket – but showed glimpses that his preferred style of play is to attack. It shouldn’t be any other way for someone who models his game on Quinton de Kock, except that there are occasions when it should be. Like this morning.Vikramjit Singh brought up his first ODI century, off 102 balls•ICC via Getty ImagesIn cloudy, cool conditions in Harare – not yet seen at this tournament – the ball was moving even more than usual. Vikramjit was squared up by the first one he faced and edged it behind as it shaped away. The chance fell short of first slip and it allowed him to score his first run, but it was a warning that sometimes batters have to defend. For the next over, that’s what he did. He scored just four runs off 12 balls before a drizzle halted play, and returned to be beaten by a beauty from Bilal Khan, which swerved away from him as he went fishing. He tapped the next ball to mid-on for one. Lesson learnt. But Vikramjit did not have to wait too long to get deliveries he could go after. Kaleemullah offered width and Vikramjit cracked him through the covers for a trio of fours. Bilal overpitched and he leaned into a drive; then he bowled a half-tracker which Vikramjit sent over deep backward square for six. And power was not the only aspect of his game. He opened the face late to steer Fayyaz Butt past backward point and got inside the line of a Kaleemullah ball to send it fine past the wicketkeeper for four. Despite his slower-than-usual start, his fifty came up in 52 balls, and he kept his scoring rate high even after the loss of his opening partner Max O’Dowd. The shots of Vikramjit’s innings were a pull over midwicket off Ayaan Khan, because of how quickly he picked the length, and a delicately laced cut between point and backward point off Aqib Ilyas, but the hallmark of his second fifty was his strike rotation. He scored only one boundary between his 80th and 100th run but ran five singles, four twos, and a three. The Dutch had shown their skill and speed in running between the wickets in their epic chase against West Indies, and a similar urgency was on display here. They have another mantra: “at least 22 twos,” because “we like to run a lot of twos, put other teams under pressure and have that intent,” Vikramjit said.In this match, Netherlands ran 31 twos compared to Oman’s 19, and though that was not the deciding factor in the end, it helped push the score up. Netherlands ended up posting their second-highest ODI total, a week after they made their highest ODI score – 374 for 9 against West Indies in one of the greatest matches the game has seen – and two weeks after they equalled their previous-highest ODI score of 315. While conditions in Zimbabwe have suited run-scoring, the runs still have to be scored and the Dutch have been consistent and clinical in doing that. They’ve also established some individuals around whom they can build their batting line-up and Vikramjit is one of them. This innings was perfectly balanced, with an equal number of runs scored on the off and on side, and it laid a foundation for Wesley Baressi to plunder 97 off 65 balls. He was set for a century of his own but won’t be too upset to have missed out because the team needed acceleration at that point.Netherlands’ victory means they are still in contention for the World Cup, albeit with an outside chance. They need to depend on Scotland beating Zimbabwe and then beat Scotland themselves on Thursday but they’re not too concerned with looking that far ahead. Instead, their focus is on making sure they can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the teams at this event, and the World Cup if they do get there, and to prove that the experience they gained in the World Cup Super League (where they won only three out of 24 matches) has made them better.”Everyone wants to win. Everyone is very competitive. There’s a good atmosphere,” Vikramjit said. “There’s a lot of talk about Associate teams and for us that’s almost a swear word in the changeroom. We’re just the Netherlands’ cricket team. We don’t call ourselves Associates.”

Wolves now eyeing late move to sign another "superb" striker with Arokodare

da dobrowin: Having already commenced talks to sign Tolu Arokodare, Wolverhampton Wanderers are now reportedly eyeing a late swoop to sign another impressive striker.

Latest on Wolves' Arokodare move

da 888: With Fabio Silva set to join Borussia Dortmund, Wolves have instantly shifted their focus towards Arokodare. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Midlands club have commenced talks to sign the KRC Genk forward, who could hand Vitor Pereira’s frontline the added depth in quality that it’s been lacking since Matheus Cunha’s departure earlier this summer.

After scoring 23 goals in all competitions last season, the Nigerian forward could be the perfect partner to Jorgen Strand Larsen this season instead of becoming the Norwegian’s replacement.

Whilst Newcastle United have submitted two bids to sign the Wolves forward, both have been rejected and fresh reports have indicated that Strand Larsen will not be allowed to leave Molineux this summer.

The line from Wolves so far has been that Arokodare would simply be replacing Silva rather than anything else. Pereira also recently had his say on Strand Larsen’s future after he scored two goals in a dramatic Carabao Cup win against West Ham United.

Romano: £26m star now set for medical with deal sealed ahead of Wolves move

The Old Gold are set to land their man…

BySean Markus Clifford Aug 26, 2025

He told reporters: “If it’s my decision, of course [Strand-Larsen stays]. Of course. Because he’s a very important player. It’s not only about the technical and tactical, it’s about the character. He’s a player with character.”

However, the manager did also admit that every player has a price and recent rumours that Wolves have set their sights on a second striker alongside Arokodare would suggest that this saga is far from over.

Wolves now eyeing late Alberto swoop

According to Molineux News, Wolves are now eyeing a late swoop to sign Yuri Alberto, who Pereira is a huge admirer of. The pair worked together during Pereira’s time at Corinthians and could now reunite as those in the Midlands set their sights on a late move alongside Arokodare.

The talented striker struck 31 goals in all competitions for Corinthians last season and would be more than capable of firing Wolves to safety. But the rumours of his potential arrival should spark some concern about Strand Larsen’s future.

Whilst Arokodare is a target to replace Silva, a move for a second striker would indicate that Strand Larsen could be heading for the exit door with Alberto lined up as his immediate replacement. Of course, there’s still plenty of dominoes to fall for this to be the case, but Wolves will be bracing themselves for a frantic few days.

Dubbed “superb” by South American football expert Nathan Joyes last November, Alberto would at least be the calibre of forward good enough to replace a talent of Strand Larsen’s level.

Romano: Everton leading race to sign £40m star with same agent as Barry

da bwin: This weekend, Everton will have their first-ever Premier League game at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium as David Moyes’ side will face Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton.

da realsbet: Ahead of the fixture, Hurzeler has spoken about what he expects from Moyes’ side: “Moyes’ teams are always very organised and difficult to create chances [against]. You have to be awake all of the time. [Jack] Grealish is a great signing and I’m sure he will help Everton, he is an unbelievable talent.”

“The atmosphere [at Goodison Park] was a special atmosphere so I expect the same this weekend. We are looking forward to seeing the new stadium but we are not there to be the nice club.”

The Toffees have their new ground and a few new players sorted, but whilst there’s time left in the transfer window, they are looking to conclude one of their longest transfer sagas of the summer.

Everton still leading the way for Dibling signing

Everton are still in talks to sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton, and despite interest from other clubs, they are the only ones currently in negotiations. Everton previously placed a bid worth £27 million that Southampton rejected, with their asking price being cited at £40 million.

And the latest update comes via Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel. It had been previously theorised that Everton’s loan signing of Jack Grealish was for the club’s alternative to Dibling, but Romano has revealed that negotiations are still ongoing.

Dibling has been a difficult deal for Everton to get done. At first, Southampton were claiming to have a £100 million price tag on Dibling, which they now seem to have dropped to a more reasonable figure. However, Everton are now facing competition for the transfer. Romano went on to add that Tottenham are holding internal talks regarding Dibling as they see Morgan Rogers as a difficult transfer to complete, and they’ve had their pursuit of Eberechi Eze hijacked by Arsenal.

Where the deal may become easier is on the personal side of things, as Everton already has a working relationship with Dibling’s agency ROOF. Everton and ROOF have already worked together this summer for the signing of Thierno Barry from Villarreal.

Dibling and Grealish play to Everton's strengths

Before signing Jack Grealish, Everton already had wingers Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye in the squad. The main problem for Moyes is that all three of these players prefer to play on the left-hand side. With Dibling, the boss would have the option of playing either a traditional right-winger or an inverted right-winger, and rotating them mid-game may catch teams by surprise, allowing Everton to create chances.

If they successfully bring in Dibling, they will also have brought in two forwards who rank among the top 14% for fouls won per 90 (with Grealish being in the top 2.5%).

This will give Moyes’s side plenty of set-piece opportunities. Last season, Everton ranked as the joint most dangerous team on set pieces, alongside Arsenal, with 8 set-piece goals. If they can fend off Tottenham and complete this deal, then the signings of Dibling and Grealish will offer new ways for Everton to attack the opposition, as well as providing them with more opportunities to play to their strengths with set pieces.

Arsenal's clash with Newcastle turns ugly! Mikel Arteta forced to restrain coach who clashed with Joelinton after last-minute Gabriel winner

Arsenal's clash with Newcastle United turned ugly on Sunday as Mikel Arteta was forced to restrain one of his coaching staff who clashed with Joelinton at full-time. The Gunners came from behind to beat the Magpies 2-1 as Eddie Howe's side continue to struggle at the bottom half of the league table after registering just one win in six games in the Premier League this season.

Arteta had to restrain his assistant

Mikel Arteta was forced to get involved in a post-match tussle between one of his assistant coaches and Newcastle star Joelinton. As the coaching staff of both clubs were exchanging pleasantries following the exciting Premier League clash at St James' Park, Joelinton angrily approached the Gunners bench and confronted the coach, who, according to , was Miguel Molina. Arteta quickly got in between the two and separated them, before putting his arm around Molina and dragging him away from the scene.

Arsenal were trailing at half-time as Nick Woltemade scored the opening goal in the 34th minute. Mikel Merino then came off the bench in the second half and scored the equaliser in the 84th minute before Gabriel Magalhaes scored the winner in injury time. The win helped the Gunners reduce their gap with league leaders Liverpool to two points, who had lost to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Newcastle's injury setback

Newcastle dealt a major injury blow during the Arsenal clash as Tino Livramento was stretchered off the pitch after going down on the ground awkwardly following a callous challenge from William Saliba in the air. Howe later confirmed that the full-back will face a lengthy lay-off.

Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham make contact over signing £80m Chelsea player

Tottenham could turn to London rivals Chelsea in search of reinforcements this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano, with contact made over signing one Blues player who’s set to leave Stamford Bridge.

Spurs’ need for reinforcements before the transfer deadline on September 1 is indisputable.

Having lost club legend Son Heung-min to LAFC and James Maddison to a serious knee injury this week, with Dejan Kulusevski also still out for a “long time” too, manager Thomas Frank is in danger of entering the 2025/2026 campaign desperately short of attacking outlets.

Their need for a new forward signing has dramatically escalated in the last few days, especially following confirmation that Maddison has ruptured his ACL and requires surgery, with the Englishman now expected to miss most of the campaign.

FFC Spurs – James Maddison

“I think we are definitely in the market in general,” Frank said about summer transfers, in the aftermath of their 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

“Of course, when players get a long-term injury we need to look into that, but generally we are in the market, yes. Nobody feels close or far away. I’m not saying anything before there’s anything that is completely 100%.”

There isn’t exactly much urgency from Frank here as the Dane attempts to quell panic and let technical director Johan Lange do his work behind-the-scenes, but Spurs need a new attacker desperately – something he’ll be acutely aware of.

Since the announcement of Maddison’s lengthy injury lay-off, a flurry of reports have linked Spurs with a wide array of attacking options.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Tottenham have already had a bid rejected for Como forward Nico Paz, while it is also believed that contact was made for Man City star Jack Grealish earlier this week amid Everton’s talks for the 29-year-old (Fabrizio Romano).

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott is another candidate to reinforce Spurs’ attacking line, but he may not be for much longer as RB Leipzig advance a move for the 22-year-old, so Lange will need to formalise the club’s interest soon.

According to Romano, Spurs are also making contingency plans in the event Richarlison leaves.

Tottenham make contact over signing Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson

The reliable reporter, via X, now claims that Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is on their shortlist of potential replacements for the Brazilian.

It isn’t just interest, either, with Romano revealing that Tottenham have made contact over signing Jackson – who’s set to be one of the next “big players” moving on in this summer’s striker domino.

The Senegalese commands a rumoured valuation of £80-£100 million, according to Sky Sports, and Daniel Levy is very unlikely at best to green-light what would be a club-record deal for Jackson considering Chelsea’s need to sell.

The Lilywhites will almost certainly look to negotiate a lower fee for him, should Richarlison leave, and they decide to move.

Jackson was actually called one of Chelsea’s most important players last season by Joe Cole, but the arrival of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap means he’ll struggle for game time next season – making a move away the best option for all parties.

Rangers must sell £3m star who earns more than Sima & Souttar combined

da realbet: Philippe Clement knows that in order to bring in his own transfer targets to Glasgow Rangers this summer, he will be expected to move on several first team players.

da luck: This may be easier said than done, especially as there appears to be interest in a player who spent the second half of last season out on loan in the Netherlands – Sam Lammers.

Beale signing could be set to leave Rangers

The Dutchman joined FC Utrecht in January and proceeded to score 11 goals in just 20 matches for the Eredivisie side between then and the end of the campaign, putting his dismal showings in Glasgow firmly behind him.

This led to links that they were going to make the move permanent when the summer came around, although Lammers would have to take a pay cut in order to make a move happen.

Now, according to Dutch outlet Voetbal international, Twente are now lining up a move for the former Atalanta forward in order to bolster their squad.

The Light Blues are seeking a fee of around £2.5m in order to part ways with Lammers, which means they will lose around £500k on the Dutchman, having spent £3m to sign him last summer.

Rangers forward Sam Lammers.

Selling the 26-year-old is the best for both parties this summer, allowing Lammers to continue his remarkable form while giving Clement a licence to go out and sign a more able replacement.

Sam Lammers' total cost at Rangers

The Ibrox side were in desperate need of some attacking reinforcements last summer as Michael Beale lost the likes of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos. This meant a move for Lammers, who joined in June, but it was a move which soon turned sour.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt gem was taking home around £18k-per-week, as per Salary Sport, with that figure notably more than both Abdallah Sima (£8.5k-per-week) and John Souttar (£8.1k-per-week) combined.

That is startling considering on-loan hero Sima netted 16 times in all competitions last season after cementing himself as a leading figure at Ibrox, while Souttar held the fort defensively after making 41 appearances in all competitions.

Lammers made 31 appearances for the Gers yet managed to find the back of the net on just two occasions, both coming in the Premiership.

Among his teammates, the forward ranked just 13th for goals and assists (three) in the league while also ranking in a lowly 18th position for big chances created (one), 28th for key passes per game (0.3) and sixth for successful dribbles per game (1.1), clearly proving that he wasn’t good enough succeed in Glasgow.

Rangers can fund rebuild by selling a flop who's worth more than Cantwell

Rangers must sell a player they only bought last summer to fund a summer rebuild

ByRoss Kilvington May 20, 2024

Additionally, Lammers cost Rangers £1.5m per goal scored, which is yet more evidence of just how poor a signing he turned out to be.

This doesn’t mean that he is a bad player, far from that. His form in the Netherlands has demonstrated that when Lammers is playing within his comfort zone, he can be excellent.

Clearly, Scottish football proved to be far too physical for him to really showcase his wonderful technical abilities and this was his downfall.

Recouping £2.5m for him might be one of the best pieces of transfer business Clement does this summer, especially considering how badly he performed at the Light Blues.
