Aston Villa line up £52m "magician" who’d be perfect for Barkley

Aston Villa are at a critical juncture in their journey under Unai Emery. Now that the dust has settled following the euphoria of qualifying for the Champions League with a fourth-place Premier League finish, the hard graft must begin.

Of course, competitive club football will not be contested until mid-August, but the interim must see some shrewd and purposeful work conducted in the transfer market.

Luton midfielder Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley is closing on a shrewd return to Villa Park after spending a season on loan under Dean Smith in 2020/21, but Monchi is moving swiftly and has entered the race for an exciting attacking talent.

Aston Villa transfer news

As per Spanish sources, Aston Villa are in the mix to sign Barcelona winger Raphinha. The La Liga giants would be reluctant to part ways due to concerns about finding a replacement, though he is valued at €60m (£52m) and such a bid could be too tempting to ignore.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

Emery's team are up against Premier League heavyweights Chelsea and Manchester United, though both superpowers fail to offer something that Villa have in their clutches: Champions League football.

How Raphinha could fit in at Aston Villa

Signed from Leeds United in a deal worth up to £55m in 2022, Raphinha has scored 20 goals and added 25 assists from 87 matches for Barcelona, winning the 2022/23 La Liga title.

He has, however, only started 43 league matches across the two campaigns, and at 27 years old he will be eager to play a prominent role that reflects his patent quality, described as a "magician" by former Whites teammate Dan James.

Raphinha might not have had the easiest time in Catalonia but he has maintained an impressive level of potency throughout, ranking among the top 13% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 1% for assists and the top 12% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

If the Brazilian can translate such qualities back to the Premier League, Villa would land a real asset to aid them as they take a seat among Europe's elite.

The 5 foot 9 winger's stylistically similar Premier League players would certainly speak of a tailor-made ability for Emery's squad, with Raphinha scoring 11 goals and adding three assists from 34 Premier League starts for Leeds during his last campaign in England.

Principally, Raphinha would sit on the right and look to maximise his playmaking skills by hitting winding balls above hapless heads and threading surgical passes through to the forward-surging Ollie Watkins, Jhon Duran.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

But to achieve this, he would find a brilliant partner from deep in the aforementioned Barkley, who was remarked to be "not far off Player of the Season" by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson after his excellent campaign with Luton Town.

As per Sofascore, Barkley posted five goals and four assists from 32 top-flight appearances in 2023/24, completing 85% of his balls and averaging 1.5 key passes, tackles and clearances, 2.1 dribbles, 6.3 ball recoveries and 6.1 successful duels per game.

The 6 foot 2 Englishman ranks among the top 15% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90, effectively using his pace and power to plough forward and rent open midfield structures, freeing up space for Raphinha.

A dynamic and creative new partnership could be formed with these signings, allowing Emery's system to shift through the phases and fire on all cylinders next season, both domestically and overseas.

Aston Villa eyeing "special" signing who'd be more exciting than Barkley

Aston Villa are close to signing Ross Barkley but another exciting talent could be on the way.

Bumrah likely to make India's Champions Trophy squad subject to fitness

Jasprit Bumrah could make it to India’s Champions Trophy squad subject to him being fit in time for the tournament that begins on February 19.ESPNcricinfo has learned the injury that prevented Bumrah from bowling on the fifth day of the Sydney Test is stress related. Though the first round of tests did not reveal a stress fracture in the back, it is understood the discomfort Bumrah suffered was related to his workload in the five Tests in Australia. He bowled 151.2 overs in nine innings, taking 32 wickets at an average of 13.06 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Accordingly, on advice from medical experts, the BCCI decided to allow Bumrah rest for at least five weeks (the Sydney Test finished on January 5) after which he will undergo another scan to determine if he can return to action.Related

If Bumrah is cleared of injury, his match fitness is likely to be tested in the final ODI of the home series against England on February 12. The deadline to submit the final Champions Trophy squad to the ICC is February 11.As it stands, Bumrah is likely to be named in India’s 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy that will be announced on Saturday, with an asterisk against his name, implying his inclusion is subject to fitness.India play three ODIs against England on February 6, 9 and 12 – their first ODIs since the tour of Sri Lanka in August last year – before the Champions Trophy begins on February 19. India are in Group A in the Champions Trophy and begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, after which they play Pakistan on February 23, and New Zealand on March 2. India play all their matches in Dubai because their government refused to let the team travel to Pakistan.

Rodgers must drop Celtic man who lost possession 25x for Old Firm

Celtic have the chance to all but confirm their third successive Scottish Premiership title in the Old Firm clash at Parkhead on Saturday at 12:30 pm.

The Hoops would move six points clear, with a healthy goal difference advantage, and that would require a sensational collapse over the final two league matches to stop them from winning the division.

However, a loss would put Rangers level on points with them at the top of the table and tee up a tense end to the 2023/24 campaign, with the Bhoys set to play Kilmarnock and St Mirren.

Brendan Rodgers.

Despite a 3-0 win over Hearts last time out, Brendan Rodgers must boldly ditch one of the players from his last starting XI in order to give his team the best chance in the Old Firm – Reo Hatate.

Why Reo Hatate should be dropped

The Japan international has missed a whopping 37 matches for club and country since the start of the season through injury and this means that he has been battling his way back to full fitness.

Unfortunately, this means that the 26-year-old star has not been at the peak of his powers and that was on display with an underwhelming performance against Hearts.

He did set up the opening goal for Celtic with a clever cross with his left foot back across the box from a corner to set up Kyogo Furuhashi for a close-range header.

However, as you can see in the table above, the rest of his display left plenty to be desired, as he lost possession a staggering 25 times in just 71 minutes of action.

It was a rusty performance from the Japanese maestro as he was dominated, losing 100% of his duels, by the opposition from a physical perspective, and a liability in possession with how often his play resulted in the ball going back to Hearts.

The player who should replace Reo Hatate

With this clash with Rangers being a must-not-lose match, given how close it is at the top of the table, Rodgers may not want a player who is not at the peak of his powers, with Hatate's performance against the Jam Tarts suggesting that he is off the pace at the moment.

Therefore, Tomoki Iwata should be brought back into the starting XI at the base of the midfield, with Callum McGregor and Matt O'Riley alongside him.

Celtic midfielder Tomoki Iwata.

The 27-year-old battler has won 52% of his duels across 16 appearances in the Premiership so far this season, and has only lost possession 5.1 times per game on average, which suggests that he would be a far more reliable option than Hatate.

Iwata also won five of his eight ground duels and only lost possession nine times in the 3-3 draw with Rangers at Ibrox last month, whilst this compatriot lost three of his six battles and gave the ball away 12 times.

Rodgers must now ruthlessly ditch Hatate from the starting XI to unleash the defensive midfielder from the start, to provide his team with a solid base to work from at Parkhead on Saturday, rather than risk consistently giving the ball away and losing the physical battle in midfield.

Two Lightning players self-isolating after breaching Covid-19 guidelines

Unidentified players will self-isolate for two weeks, missing three Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy fixtures

Matt Roller07-Sep-2020Two players representing Lightning in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy are self-isolating after breaching Covid-19 guidelines. The ECB has confirmed a report on the CricketHER website that both players were made unavailable for selection for Lightning’s last game against Northern Diamonds, which they lost by two wickets. The players have been told to self-isolate for two weeks, a stricter sanction than the one imposed by Kent on Jordan Cox, the 19-year-old batsman who breached protocols by agreeing to have his photo taken with a fan.It is understood that clubs have been given discretion on how they handle breaches, with certain minimum standards imposed. Lightning have opted to exceed those minimum standards to mitigate the risks of transmission, though the exact nature of the breach remains unclear.Lightning are currently winless after three games of the tournament. They will be without the self-isolating players during their next two fixtures, against Central Sparks on Friday and Thunder on Sunday, though are likely to have them available again for their final group game. The news follows the abandonment on Sunday of Northamptonshire’s Bob Willis Trophy match against Gloucestershire, after a non-playing Northants squad member tested positive for Covid-19.The ECB will confirm later this week whether Friday’s T20 Blast game between the two teams will go ahead as planned, depending in part on what contact the player involved had with team-mates before his positive test. The player who tested positive has not been part of Northants’ T20 campaign so far, and did not travel with the squad to Bristol. The ECB and the club are working through the relevant medical protocols, and as things stand, the fixture is still expected to be played.

Liton Das' record 176 leads Bangladesh's rout of Zimbabwe

Tamim Iqbal also cracked a century as Bangladesh cruised to a 123-run victory and 3-0 series win

The Report by Liam Brickhill06-Mar-2020
Records tumbled in Sylhet as Bangladesh cruised to a 123-run victory and a 3-0 series win over Zimbabwe to give Mashrafe Mortaza a fitting send-off in his final match as captain. Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal cemented their side’s dominance with an opening partnership of 292, Bangladesh’s highest for any wicket in ODIs. Both men reached their second hundreds of the series, with Das soaring to 176 to break the record for the highest individual score for Bangladesh in an ODI. It was a record set by Iqbal in the previous match.Bangladesh’s batsmen hit an incredible 14 sixes, the most by them in an ODI, to reach 322 for 3, equalling the team record for highest score against Zimbabwe in an ODI. As a result of a rain delay in the evening, which knocked seven overs out of Bangladesh’s innings, Zimbabwe’s target was readjusted upwards to a mountainous 342. They never looked like getting close, Sikandar Raza’s fifty in his 100th ODI only delaying the inevitable as Mohammad Saifuddin lead the way with 4 for 41 to bowl the visitors out for 218 in the 38th over. While Iqbal mixed watchful accumulation with brutal striking, Das found his groove with a more silken touch even when he was lifting the ball over the boundary. Das also rode some very good luck: he might have been dismissed lbw when he had just 54 to his name, hadZimbabwe used the review available to them, and he was also dropped three times in the outfield. He made them pay for the errors. With Das ticking past fifty in the 16th over, the opening stand moved inexorably beyond 100. Iqbal raised a fifty of his own six overs later, and took it upon himself to deflate the pressure built by Zimbabwe after a spell of just 20 runs in 5.5 overs, steppingout to swat Wesley Madhevere over wide long-on for his second six off the spinner.Having tootled merrily beyond 150, the next milestone to tick off was that of Bangladesh’s highest opening stand in ODIs and that arrived courtesy Iqbal’s towering mow over deep midwicket off Williams in an over that leaked 17 runs.Das both raised his second hundred of the series (and third overall in ODIs) and moved past 1,000 runs in this format with an elegant late cut in the same over. Bangladesh’s openers were in sight of another record – their highest ODI stand for any wicket- when the weather closed in in the 34th over and the players were forced off the field shortly after 4pm.The crowd played its part in bidding Mashrafe Mortaza farewell in his last match as captain•Raton Gomes/BCB

After a delay of more than two-and-a-half hours, play was eventually able to get underway again but Zimbabwe’s discipline with the ball – they had bowled only one extra in the first 34 overs, and that too only a leg bye – seemed to have deserted them. Brendan Taylor immediately dropped a difficult chance at third man, Donald Tiripano let slip with a wide, and Carl Mumba then had Das caught at short fine leg off a high full toss that was called a no-ball.The break did nothing to temper Das’ timing, or Iqbal’s for that matter. They marched steadily onwards and it was sixes, rather than water, that came raining down in Sylhet with 142 runs flowing from the last nine-and-a-half overs. Zimbabwe struggled to come toterms with a wet ball and a damp outfield, and Das was dropped by Raza at long-on and then by Madhevere at deep midwicket as the runs kept flowing.Das raced through the 150s, making the Bangladesh individual score record his own with a pair of sixes off Raza. When Mumba was deposited over the ropes for back-to-back sixes, it seemed he might be able to threaten the double-hundred, but he was eventually caughtat long-on, aiming for a ninth six. With Iqbal smiting two more sixes and a four in the penultimate over of the innings, Zimbabwe were faced with the prospect of an immense DLS-adjusted target under lights. But, as has been the case throughout the series, their wobble in the chase began early. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe couldn’t get his feet moving, and edged a Mortaza outswinger in the very first over, while Taylor’s poor run of form continued as he flapped a length deliveryfrom Saifuddin to midwicket to fall for 14.Afif Hossain then struck with his second ball in ODIs, Sean Williams playing inside an offbreak to be bowled for 30 in the 14th over. The required rate had ballooned to more than nine by this point, and it only kept creeping upwards. The 19-year old Madhevere once again acquitted himself competently, scooting to a run-a ball-42 before he was caught at point off a ball from Saifuddin that got big on him. Raza did his best to keep the score moving and was briefly helped by Tiripano, whostruck two big sixes but could not repeat his heroics from Tuesday night.Raza reached his fifty in quick time, but the match remained firmly within Bangladesh’s grasp. He was out attempting to clear the boundary off Saifuddin, who followed up his slower bouncer to Raza with a quick yorker that skittled No. 11 Charlton Tshuma, wrapping up one final record for Bangladesh: 50 wins as captain for Mashrafe Mortaza, making him his country’s most successful leader in this format. With emotions running high, Mortaza’s team-mates hoisted him up on their shoulders as a packed stadium cheered a victorious end to his reign.

Leeds eyeing £4m-rated gem who’s "like Riyad Mahrez" to partner Summerville

There's no denying that Leeds United have started the new year with a bang, romping to three successive 3-0 victories across the Championship and FA Cup, with even the returning Patrick Bamford now fit and firing again with a goal in each of those triumphs.

For all the positivity surrounding Elland Road at present, amid those statement showings, manager Daniel Farke is seemingly aware that there is still room for improvement with the club still seven points behind the automatic promotion places.

Daniel Farke.

In order to bridge that gap over the coming months, the Whites must surely act decisively this month in order to strengthen their ranks, with recent reports indicating that the Yorkshire side do have their eyes set on one intriguing target, in particular.

Leeds eyeing Premier League talent

According to respected insider Phil Hay of The Athletic, Farke views the full-back positions as particular priorities this month, having only recently allowed the likes of Djed Spence and Luke Ayling to depart.

While that has heightened the need for reinforcement at right-back, it is on the opposite flank where the promotion hopefuls could also bolster their ranks, with Hay naming Luton Town's Ryan Giles among those to have been linked with a move to Elland Road.

The 23-year-old only joined the Hatters from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent deal over the summer, although having started just five Premier League games this season, the Englishman may potentially be on his way.

Having previously shone on the last of several loans away from Molineux at Middlesbrough last season, the Telford-born gem – who is valued at €5m (£4m) by CIES Football Observatory – could again wreak havoc in the Championship for Leeds over the coming months.

How Ryan Giles would fit in at Leeds

While the former England U20 international has typically operated as a wing-back in recent seasons with both Luton and Boro, he could well offer a real attack-minded presence at left-back for Farke's side, as showcased by his stellar form last season at the Riverside.

That 2022/23 campaign saw Giles register a remarkable haul of 12 assists in all competitions – 11 of which came in 45 outings in the second tier – ensuring he could offer a real creative outlet for the likes of Bamford, Georginio Rutter and Joel Piroe to feed off.

As new Birmingham City boss Tony Mowbray previously stated, the 6 foot ace has "got fantastic talent, brilliant speed, amazing technique on his left foot", ensuring he could also strike up a devastating partnership with Crysencio Summerville down the left flank.

11 assists

23 'big chances' created

1.9 tackles & interceptions per game

7.07 avg. match rating

Stats via Sofascore

The young Dutchman has emerged as a real talisman this season with 12 goals and seven assists in just 24 league outings while typically operating down the left, with overlapping runs from the forward-thinking Giles only set to allow him more space to thrive in.

The Luton man would also be able to provide quality service to Summerville down that side having created 23 'big chances' last season while averaging an impressive two key passes per game – further evidence of just what an attacking weapon he is with his wand of a left foot.

Aside from being able to flourish alongside Leeds' number ten, Giles also has the flexibility to be able to feature on the right-hand side if required, with Mowbray hailing his ability to "dance inside like Riyad Mahrez" when operating in that role.

As Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola stated back in 2021, Mahrez is a player of "special quality" who "dances on the pitch", having contributed 82 goals and 61 assists in 284 Premier League games during his time at the Etihad and for Leicester City.

While Giles won't be tasked with operating in quite such an advanced role as the Algerian winger, the fact he has been spoken of so highly should be music to the ears of those at Elland Road.
