West Brom can solve Kipre situation with 21 y/o who “leads by example”

da betano casino: West Bromwich Albion will know, when all of the drama of this Championship season is over and done with, that they will need to attempt to tie down Cedric Kipre to a new contract at the Hawthorns – with his existing deal set to expire in June.

da wazamba: Once shipped out on loan to Cardiff City as a fringe figure clutching onto his Baggies future precariously, the 27-year-old is now a mainstay in the heart of defence for Carlos Corberan's men with 44 appearances tallied up in all competitions this season.

The centre-back's future in the West Midlands remains up in the air however, with Alex Mowatt even potentially following the defender out of the door if an extended deal cannot be reached for the ex-Leeds United man either.

Corberan will look towards the crop of young talent coming through at the Hawthorns right now to try and replace Kipre if he does leave in the summer, with this 21-year-old defender potentially ready to take on the baton.

Caleb Taylor's time at West Brom

Described as a character that "leads by example" by his former U18 coach Peter Gilbert, Caleb Taylor could be set for more first-team opportunities next season if Kipre does depart.

Taylor has amassed nine first-team appearances for the Baggies to date, having excelled in the youth set-ups in the West Midlands over 69 games.

The 21-year-old has shown he can tee up his teammates to score, much like Kipre managed at the weekend with Jed Wallace away at Leicester City, by picking up four assists from those U18 and U21 contests.

West Brom decided in the last transfer window to ship Taylor off to Bolton Wanderers until the end of the season on loan, with a view that this loan switch would be formative for the promising centre-back who could cut his teeth further with the Trotters.

It hasn't all gone to plan for Taylor away from the comforts of the Hawthorns, however, with injury issues keeping him sidelined for large chunks of the loan spell, but the 21-year-old impressed Bolton boss Ian Evatt last time out up against Port Vale when handed a start.

Caleb Taylor's time at Bolton

Only playing six times for Evatt's promotion hopefuls down in League One since joining, Taylor's standout display against Darren Moore's Valiants was undoubtedly his best.

Praised by the Trotters manager for doing "really well" up against Vale's physical forward Uche Ikpeazu all afternoon, who even left Evatt with "two broken ribs" during an encounter in his playing days, Taylor might well have made himself a guaranteed starter now if Bolton have to make do with the playoffs.

As can be seen scanning the table above, Taylor was a brick wall in the eventual 2-0 win for his loan side – winning 12 duels bravely against Vale, whilst also showing his calmness on the ball by amassing 107 touches when playing out from the back.

It looks unlikely that the Trotters can leapfrog Derby County at the death to that second automatic spot, with the Rams' superior goal difference and final day task of needing just a point against an already relegated Carlisle United to go up, but Taylor will be relishing the prospect of the playoffs to get even more minutes under his belt for his short-term employers.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Corberan, back in the West Midlands, will also be preparing his players for the scraps that will follow in the playoffs in the division above with the potential for the Spaniard to integrate Taylor into the West Brom first-team set-up more when this wild campaign is over.

If Kipre, therefore, does move on at the end of his deal later this year, the Baggies could already have a ready-made replacement.

GVB struck gold by selling Rangers star who has just 5 goals since exit

Glasgow Rangers are on a spectacular run right now which has seen them recently return to the summit of the Premiership table for the first time since August 2022.

While the players have been excellent, Philippe Clement is the catalyst behind such an impressive few months. The Belgian arrived last October with the Ibrox side engulfed in a crisis, but fast-forward five months, and he has the club in a title race, secured his first trophy while even setting up a Europa League last 16 clash against Benfica.

There will be bumps in the road, no doubt about it, but the transformation has shown that the club are ready to fight for every trophy.

One key element that the 49-year-old will be keen to develop at Ibrox is the establishment of a successful player trading model.

Previously, the Gers have paid money for players, only for their value to decrease or for them to run down their contracts and leave for free.

Over the previous decade, only three players have generated the club a major profit: Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo.

The former two are performing well for their new clubs, yet Aribo has largely struggled since leaving Glasgow, indicating that perhaps selling him in 2022 was the correct thing to do.

How much Rangers signed Joe Aribo for

Following an underwhelming debut season in charge of Rangers, Steven Gerrard sought to bolster his side prior to the 2019/20 campaign.

The likes of Ryan Kent, Filip Helander and Greg Stewart joined the Light Blues, but it was the signing of Aribo which looked the most exciting.

The attacking midfielder had shone for Charlton Athletic in the season prior, scoring ten times and grabbing five assists as he helped the side secure promotion back to the Championship.

He signed for the club on a four-year contract, costing the Gers just £300k because of cross-border transfer rules and Gerrard hailed his new arrival.

"We have a good midfield but currently we don’t have a player with Joe’s characteristics.

“He is tall, athletic and quick. He’s a box-to-box player and is not afraid to open the door when he gets around the box and he can unlock defences.”

High praise indeed for the youngster, and he was clearly ready to turn heads during his spell in Scotland, as it was evident Aribo was destined for bigger things in the future.

Joe Aribo’s statistics at Rangers

Aribo started off encouragingly at Rangers, scoring nine goals and chipping in with eight assists, although the club failed to lift any silverware during a season which was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was the 2020/21 campaign in which the former Charlton midfielder began to really showcase his talents, however, as the Light Blues steamrolled all opposition as they won their first title for a decade.

The Nigerian international registered 15 goal contributions – eight goals and seven assists – in all competitions and ranked sixth among his teammates for goals and assists (11) in the top flight, along with ranking fourth for big chances created (seven), fourth for key passes per game (1.2) and first for successful dribbles per game (1.9), displaying his full repertoire of skills during the season.

Aribo was fast becoming a crowd favourite at Ibrox due to his mesmerising displays and the 2021/22 season would be his most productive yet.

Nine goals were scored in all competitions, but it was his effort in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt which will be remembered most fondly, despite the club losing the game on penalties.

Aribo became just the fourth Rangers player to score in a major European final and the first since Willie Johnston in the 1972 Cup Winners' Cup final.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

He won a Scottish Cup winners medal a few days later, but Giovanni van Bronckhorst accepted an offer of £6m from Premier League side Southampton for the midfielder during the 2022 summer transfer window.

It marked the end of a successful three-year stint north of the border and while the Gers did not want to lose a player of his quality, the offer was clearly too good to turn down.

Safe to say, the 27-year-old has not enjoyed the most fruitful of spells at Southampton since joining nearly two years ago.

How Joe Aribo is doing at Southampton

There was no doubting Aribo’s Premier League credentials, as his spell at Rangers, especially with his displays in Europe, proved he could cut it in the English top flight.

He only started 13 league matches last season, however, scoring just two goals and his talents were wasted as the Saints suffered their first relegation from the top flight since 2005.

Despite their relegation to the second tier, Aribo has failed to secure a consistent run in the starting XI, making just eight starts in the Championship all season.

Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo.

The former Gers star has netted just three times, and it looks as though his move down south has turned south, even if the Saints may secure promotion at the first time of asking.

Aribo currently ranks in a lowly 18th position among the squad for key passes per game (0.5) in the Championship, while also ranking 13th for successful dribbles per game (0.6) and these numbers are a fry cry for his displays at Rangers, especially in the season they won the league.

His recent struggles suggest the Light Blues made the correct call, cashing in on the player, even if it meant weakening the side, as he clearly wanted a dream move to the Premier League.

Scoring just five goals in 18 months since departing Scotland is not the form the Saints, or even Aribo himself anticipated, and he needs to work hard to earn more minutes between now and May.

Clement must know the right time to sell some of his prized assets, as the money generated could allow him to sign even more talented youngsters, who will then make the club a big profit.

It may well be the circle of life, but this model could help the Gers reestablish themselves as the best club in Scotland.

Age fraud – BCCI offers amnesty scheme to players, promises 'stern actions' to curb menace

In its most high-profile move against age fraud, the BCCI has proposed an amnesty scheme accompanied by a system of punishments for offenders. Under this, registered players will get an opportunity to voluntarily declare any age fraud and avoid suspension if they provide their actual date of birth, but face bans if they are found to have breached this.A press statement from the board on Monday said that if the BCCI discovered such a fraud after the deadline of declaration – September 15, 2020 – the players could be banned for two years and barred from any age-group tournaments even after the ban ended. That rule would be both applicable both at the India and the state levels.ALSO READ: Indian cricket’s age-fraud problemAge fraud, as the BCCI said, has been a “menace: in Indian cricket for long specifically at age-group level: Under-16, Under 19 and Under 23 (both men women categories).” ESPNcricinfo understands that in the last two years itself, the BCCI has suspended 236 players – 210 men and 26 women. A total of 159 players were detected to have committed age fraud in 2019-20 season.Rahul Dravid, the former India captain who is now director of cricket at the National Cricket Academy, has long considered age fraud as “seriously detrimental” to the culture of Indian cricket. Dravid reiterated that stance in the media release on Monday.”Age fraud is a serious matter and is detrimental to the health of the sport,” Dravid said. “Many youngsters who are supposed to be playing in a particular age group fail to make it owing to age fraud. With the BCCI taking stern actions to curb this, it is only advisable for the players to come forward and abide by the directives issued by the board.”Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, has underlined his commitment to “providing a level-playing field across all age groups”. “The BCCI has been taking steps to counter age fraud and are now introducing even stricter measures from the upcoming domestic season. Those who do not voluntarily disclose their misdemeanour will be punished heavily and will be banned for two years,” he said. How does the age verification process work?As part of the age verification process, at Under-19 level, the player has to submit his birth certificate along with as many documents concerning his school/college educational reports. For the Under-16 category, the BCCI conducts a one-time TW3 (Tanner-Whitehouse3) bone maturation test at the Under-16 level only. The TW3 test, adopted by the BCCI in 2012, allows accurate estimation of a player’s age by the analysis of x-rays of the lower end of the player’s forearm.Going forward, from the 2020-21 season, the BCCI said only players aged between 14 and 16 will be permitted to register for the Under-16 level. For the Under-19 category, if a player’s birth certificate has a date two years after his actual date of birth, there will a cap imposed on the number of years the player can feature at that level.Nonetheless, players have managed to bypass these rules. Last year, the BCCI banned Rasikh Salam, the Jammu & Kashmir pace bowler who represented Mumbai Indians in one IPL game, for two years for submitting a faulty birth certificate when registering with the board. At the time, he was part of the India Under-19 side to play a triangular one-day series in Bangladesh.ALSO READ: Age-fudging no different from fixing – Rahul DravidThe BCCI introduced a 24-hour helpline last year (see footnote) to report age and domicile fraud. Upon receiving complaints, the BCCI has launched investigations that reach out to the players’ schools, hospitals of birth, local municipalities and panchayats etc. to verify the documentation provided.Domicile fraudThe voluntary disclosure scheme will not apply to domicile fraud, which also carries a two-year ban. The number of such cases might have gone up with newer states qualifying to play Ranji Trophy in accordance with Lodha reforms. So, a player qualified to play for a more established state might find it easier to get selected for newer states. The BCCI also said players under the age of 14 would not be allowed to play in Under-16 tournaments. And those whose birth was registered more than two years after the date of birth would be allowed to play only a certain number of years in the Under-19 events. It didn’t spell out the restriction.

Nottingham Forest could land "monster" £25m Murillo partner

Since arriving in December, Nuno Espirito Santo has identified the striker role as a position to upgrade on at Nottingham Forest, but he is now also on the lookout for a new defender.

However, their search could be put on hold after the club has been charged with a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Nevertheless, let’s take a look at the defender who could become the perfect partner for Murillo.

Forest’s search for a centre-back

According to reports from TEAMtalk earlier this week, Forest are interested in signing Trevoh Chalobah this month.

The Chelsea defender rejected a move to the Tricky Trees in the summer, but it is believed he could make the switch due to his desire to remain in England.

The Blues will reportedly accept a bid of £25m for the defender, but Forest will face competition from a couple of Italian clubs, notably Napoli.

How Chalobah would fit in the Forest team

Since moving to Forest in the summer for around £15m, Murillo has been a rock at the heart of the backline. The left-footed star has featured as the left centre-back in 15 Premier League matches this season, and since entering the starting XI, he has yet to be displaced.

Furthermore, before this weekend, the Brazilian ranked first for the most clearances per ninety minutes (6) for players aged 21 or less throughout the entirety of Europe's top five leagues.

However, for the side to really develop into a top-half team, they must sign a right centre-back to partner Murillo, and Chalobah would be perfect for the role.

The Chelsea defender hasn’t played a single game of football all season, with the club’s never-ending recruitment and Chalobah’s need for minutes pushing him further down the pecking order. However, prior to the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, the 24-year-old was a frequent starter for the Blues, playing 25 times in the Premier League last season.

Nonetheless, the table below shows a handful of Chalobah’s statistics from the last year across the top European leagues.

Chalobah has been described as a “monster” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig for his ability to dominate both with and without the ball, with the ex-Huddersfield loanee extremely comfortable dealing with attackers who are direct, due to his athletic frame That makes him dynamic, as shown by his impressive tackling numbers.

The Chelsea star’s biggest attribute is his ability on the ball and confidence to receive it under any circumstance, highlighted by his high touches, successful take-ons, and passes completed. However, he also has the bravery to progress the ball quickly, which is vital when playing for a side that operates on the break.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Therefore, Chalobah would add a nice balance next to Murillo, who tends to progress play via dribbling, as shown by the fact he is in the top 1% for successful take-ons in the Premier League, as per FBref.

Overall, Chalobah is an extremely talented defender who needs the right environment to flourish, and he could do just that next to Murillo at Forest.

Lucas Bergvall becomes second-youngest Spurs player ever to score and assist in a Premier League game after starring role in thumping of West Ham

Lucas Bergvall announced himself in dazzling fashion as Tottenham Hotspur crushed West Ham 3-0 in a fiery London derby. The Swedish prodigy, just 19 years and 223 days old, became the second-youngest Spurs player ever to both score and assist in a single Premier League match. Only Nick Barmby (18 years, 321 days), who achieved the feat back in 1992, stands ahead of him in the record books.

Spurs pile misery on shambolic Hammers

From the very first whistle, West Ham looked rattled. Tottenham’s press suffocated the hosts and, when Mohammed Kudus’ corner was nodded home by Cristian Romero in the 19th minute, it looked like the breakthrough had come. But referee Jarred Gillett pulled it back for a foul by Micky van de Ven on Kyle Walker-Peters. Spurs didn’t sulk; they turned the screw.

AdvertisementBergvall’s magic moment stuns London Stadium

Just minutes before the hour mark, Romero lofted a searching pass into the box, and Bergvall rose majestically, guiding a looping header into the far corner. The finish oozed composure, and Spurs players mobbed him while the away fans roared; a new star had truly arrived.

Assist adds shine to historic night

If the goal showcased Bergvall’s instinct, his assist underlined his intelligence. Driving into the box with fearless intent, the youngster laid it on a plate for Van de Ven, who swept the ball home in the 64th minute. That strike killed off any faint hopes of a West Ham revival. For Bergvall, it was a moment of history; the stats confirming his place among Spurs’ youngest-ever difference-makers.

AFPChampions League test next for Bergvall

For Spurs boss Thomas Frank, it was the kind of dominant performance he has been demanding after a shock loss to Bournemouth before the international break. His midfield was disciplined, his forwards ruthless, and his teenage sensation, Bergvall, delivered a game to remember. With Champions League duties looming against Villarreal on Tuesday night, the timing couldn’t be better.

Aston Villa make "formal bid" to sign 22 y/o player alongside Morgan Rogers

da imperador bet: After enduring a quiet January transfer window so far, it now seems as though Aston Villa are set for a busy end to January with rumours suggesting they could yet sign a number of players. Among those is Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough, who could join before the Midlands club add a backup for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Aston Villa transfer news

da brwin: According to John Percy of The Telegraph, Aston Villa have made a second bid to sign Rogers after seeing their first offer turned down by Middlesbrough, who want to see their price tag for the forward met in full to sanction a sale this month. In a deal that could go right up to the deadline, the former Manchester City man is certainly one to watch.

He's not the only player that Unai Emery could welcome this month, either, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Aston Villa are set to sign Kosta Nedeljkovic from Red Star Belgrade, before loaning the defender back to the club for the remainder of the season. The transfer guru has since kept the good news coming for Villa fans too.

According to Romano, Aston Villa have also sent a formal bid to sign goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson from Swedish club Elfsborg this month. The Villans have reportedly submitted a bid in excess of €2m (£1.7m) to beat FC Copenhagen's offer of around €1.7m (£1.45m). Romano posted the news on X, saying:

With just over 10 days to go in the January transfer window, it looks as though Villa could yet welcome as many as three fresh faces for Emery.

"Aggressive" Valdimarsson could be ideal backup to Martinez

Whilst Valdimarsson is incredibly unlikely to take Martinez's number one spot at Aston Villa anytime soon, he could at least provide Emery with some adequate backup to the Argentine. At just 22 years old, the Iceland shot-stopper still has plenty of room for improvement too, handing Villa the chance to mould him into a future star when Martinez is ready to step away from his role. Talking Tactics recently spoke about Valdimarrson ahead of his potential move, posting on X:

If Valdimarsson does reach a new level at Aston Villa, should they complete a move, then the Midlands club could be getting themselves the perfect bargain, especially if they're most recent reported offer of £2m is accepted by Elfsborg. The goalkeeper could be one to keep an eye on for the rest of the month.

Newcastle eyeing Calvert-Lewin transfer

Newcastle United have a decent number of English players in their squad at the moment such as Callum Wilson, Matt Targett, Kieran Trippier and Jonjo Shelvey among others.

Now that the summer transfer window is around the corner, it seems as though the Tyneside club are eyeing up another English talent to come in and strengthen their squad.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle are “strongly interested” in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

The report claimed that Arsenal are also eyeing the Englishman, who is ‘likely to leave Goodison Park’ irrespective of whether or not the Toffees avoid relegation this season.

Back in January, it was reported that Everton had put a £60m price tag on their star striker.

Calvert-Lewin’s career so far

Everton signed the centre-forward from Sheffield United back in 2016 in a deal worth a reported £1.5m. Since then, the 25-year-old has gone on to make 187 appearances for the Merseyside club across all competitions.

In those six years, the England international has found the next 56 times and provided 17 assists along the way.

Labelled a “cold” player by former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti, the 2020/21 season showed what a capable striker Calvert-Lewin is at Premier League level.

With 46 shots on target in the league last term, only Harry Kane (47) had more, which goes to show how dangerous the Everton star can be when at his best.

He’d be fabulous for Howe

Newcastle supporters will be very much aware of what the Toffees hitman is capable of producing, as he has delivered more goal contributions against the Magpies than any other team he has faced in his career, with five goals scored and one assist provided in 10 appearances.

Taking into account how Newcastle have only racked up a shot-on-target percentage of 31% this season – the fifth-worst in the Premier League – adding a player like Calvert-Lewin could be just what they need to become a deadlier attacking team in the future.

With the 25-year-old having been described by Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness as a “fabulous” player with “a lot to like about him”, he could be the perfect summer signing for Eddie Howe amid his efforts to push the Toon as far up the league as possible.
