Man City could land their own Mbappe in deal for £100m sensation

Manchester City have failed to make any signings during the transfer window thus far, but Pep Guardiola wont be pushing the panic buttons just yet.

He led the club to their fourth straight Premier League title last season, therefore, the squad is in a pretty solid shape.

If the Spaniard wishes to add another Champions League title to his collection, however, might he go big on a few star signings ahead of the 2024/25 campaign?

Man City eye move for Real Madrid superstar

According to a report from TEAMtalk earlier this month, City are the only team with a genuine interest in signing Rodrygo from Real Madrid this summer.

Any potential move will cost Guardiola, however, as the La Liga champions will demand a fee in excess of £100m for the Brazilian to leave the club he joined in 2019.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

Arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick this summer mean competition for places will be extreme in the Spanish capital next term, which could suggest Rodrygo’s departure ahead of the new season.

Guardiola could sign his own version of the French sensation by swooping for Rodrygo in the next few weeks, as the pair offer similar qualities going forward.

How Rodrygo compares to Kylian Mbappé

Mbappé ended months of speculation by finally signing for Madrid at the start of June. The Frenchman could be the final piece of the jigsaw for Carlo Ancelotti’s side as they chase more history.

Will his arrival spark the end of things for Rodrygo, however? The Brazilian scored 17 goals and registered nine assists across 51 matches for the Spanish side last term and there is no doubt he could offer a wonderful attacking threat for Pep next term.

According to FBref, Mbappé is the third-most comparable player to the 23-year-old in Europe’s top five leagues, which suggests Guardiola could land a player with incredible talent in the final third.

Indeed, the duo registered similar statistics domestically with regard to assists (five vs seven), shots per 90 (1.32 vs 2.09), shot-creating actions per 90 (4.2 vs 4.04), goal-creating actions per 90 (0.52 vs 0.79) and touches in the attacking penalty area (206 vs 207), demonstrating how impressive the pair where from an attacking standpoint last season.

U23 talent scout Antonio Mango hailed Rodyrgo as “sensational” late last year, and he has emerged as one of the finest attacking players on the continent since moving from his homeland five years ago, with his finishing levels having even been dubbed "terrifyingly good" by journalist Sam Tighe.

Across 216 appearances for the current Champions League holders, the winger has registered 95 goal contributions – 54 goals and 41 assists – which works out as a goal involvement every 2.3 matches, a sublime statistic.

Man City chase "extraordinary" £205k-p/w star as potential Grealish upgrade

The Cityzens are keen to strengthen their ranks this summer.

ByBen Browning May 31, 2024

Numbers like this would make him an instant hit in a City team full of quality players on their own merit. The likes of Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden would help Rodrygo potentially improve on his figures from last season.

£100m may sound a lot on the surface, but it could be a wise move should Guardiola lure him to Manchester this summer.

Virat Kohli gears up for the final reckoning of a tour defined by misjudgments

Can the new year bring us a glimpse of the old master?

Alagappan Muthu01-Jan-20250:44

Finch: Feels like Kohli is trying to pick a fight

It feels like there are two Virat Kohlis taking part in this Border-Gavaskar Trophy and that’s his own fault.Six years ago, when he came on this very tour, he scored a century that would rank among the very best that any batter has made away from home. Perth 2018 was a hero’s innings, the kind of innings that weds cricketers to their fans, and makes them believe anything is possible while they’re at the crease.Related

Can Virat Kohli find a plan B before it's too late?

Kohli's spell of hell at the MCG

Rohit Sharma and the ties that are a fraying

Even at the start of 2024, Kohli was showing signs of outrageous competence. He made 46 on a pitch where South Africa were bowled out for 55. It’s funny. A lot of his batting is mechanical. Straight lines. Robotic movements. But he gets the artist treatment. And that’s entirely justified because his art is in defying expectation. The tougher the challenge, the better he played. Every team, across history, has wanted somebody like that.Except right now he’s not doing so great. It’s almost as if all of Kohli’s previous successes have come at a price and he’s paying it by getting out to balls outside the off stump over and over again. All six of his dismissals in Australia have followed this pattern.3:37

Time to take tough calls on Rohit and Kohli?

“It’s time that he not only got runs but get out in a different fashion to show that he’s overcome that problem,” Sanjay Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve never seen somebody with the kind of performance and impact that Virat Kohli’s had on Test cricket have this kind of weakness. I don’t think any other top-class batter has had this. There may have been a patch where somebody has got out repeatedly in a fashion but this has gone on for far too long.”Kohli has walked in with his team in trouble in virtually every innings of this tour barring the one where he made a century. It’s been the inverse of his career, right down to where he was being roundly booed by a record crowd at the MCG. Sam Konstas, even if he doesn’t do anything further of significance in his life, which seems highly unlikely, could still point to Boxing day in Melbourne where he turned the most popular cricketer in the world into a villain.Just before the shoulder barge, Konstas and Mohammed Siraj were getting stuck in. The bowler didn’t like the batter charging him. He probably said as much. Soon after the first words were exchanged, Konstas used the crease differently, stepping away instead of stepping down, and carved Siraj for a four through point. The over ended with a predictable bouncer that Konstas didn’t seem entirely in control of. Kohli thought he had a moment to seize as he walked down from slip. Here was a rookie taking high-risk options every time he was put under pressure. So let’s put some more pressure on him.Kohli got that one wrong, and as badly as it came off, a 36-year-old superstar trying to intimidate a 19-year-old starlet, the real-world effect was worse. It made Konstas double down on his aggression.Another innings, another walk back following a dismissal outside off stump•AFP/Getty Images”I think Virat’s always someone who’s thrived on pressure,” Aaron Finch said on ESPNcricinfo, “And he’s thrived when his back’s against the wall and it just feels at this stage he’s trying to put his own back against the wall. He’s trying to be antagonistic. He’s trying to almost trying to pick a fight because that’s when he plays at his best, when he feels that someone’s coming at him. That’s when he puts all his skill on show. Just feels like he’s almost pushing other people to make him feel like that.”Kohli has defined so many Test series with his batting and his attitude. This one is being defined by his misjudgments. Sydney offers a chance for him to set it all right. He almost did in Melbourne when even Steven Smith thought Australia were about to be at the receiving end of a masterclass. That innings also went by the wayside because of a misjudgment – the run-out of Yashasvi Jaiswal rattling him so much that he immediately committed the mistake he was taking pains not to, reaching for a ball outside off.Maybe the new year will help bring back the old Kohli. He’s still the old Kohli on the field, engaging with the crowd, both when they boo him and when they cheer him. He revved them up on day four at the MCG when India fought back. He offered non-stop suggestions to Rohit Sharma. He was involved with every ball of the play. That guy walking out with the MRF bat is what India wants at the SCG where they need a win to retain the trophy. He would want it too. Maybe even need it. Not many players get to be part of a team when they’re getting out the same way while they’ve been in patchy form for five years.

Red Sox Trade Top Outfield Prospect to Pirates for Pitcher Johan Oviedo

The Red Sox bolstered their starting pitching rotation on Thursday, having agreed to acquire right-handed starting pitcher Johan Oviedo in a trade with the Pirates.

The deal reportedly includes five players in total, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The highlight of the package Boston is sending to Pittsburgh is the Red Sox’s No. 3 prospect and top outfield prospect, Jhostynxon Garcia.

Oviedo, 27, made nine starts for the Pirates in 2025. He registered an ERA of 3.57 and had 42 strikeouts across 40 1/3 innings. Oviedo missed the entire ‘24 campaign and part of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. His last full season of work came in 2023, when he made 32 starts and had a 4.31 ERA.

In addition to Oviedo, the Red Sox will also receive left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego and catching prospect, 2025 fifth-round pick Adonys Guzman. The Pirates will also acquire another player alongside Garcia.

Garcia, 22, saw his first taste of MLB action in 2025, when he appeared in five games for the Red Sox. He struck out five times in a total of seven at-bats. Across 114 games in the minor leagues last season, he had a .810 OPS with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs.

Oviedo is now the second starting pitcher the Red Sox acquired this offseason. The team traded for Sonny Gray in late November, and now will add Oviedo to the mix, too.

TORCIDA EMPURRA O TIME RUMO À LIBERTADORES

This is not over, you have been warned, David Warned

The end of Warner’s Test career is only the beginning of another one – or five

Alan Gardner16-Jan-2024So, farewell then, David Warner. Although bringing down the curtain on a storied Test career is really only the start of the long goodbye for Australia’s best-loved bad-boy-turned-good, a man who seemed to epitomise what the country is really all about: looks cuddly, might kill you. There was, predictably, plenty of emotion swirling around the SCG as Warner doffed his baggy green for the final time (that after the cap had mysteriously resurfaced at the team hotel, presumably with the toerag who had pinched it having realised his grave mistake). Australians love a good send-off – and we’re not just talking about the Merv Hughes variety – so don’t be surprised if there’s plenty more lovey-Davey stuff to come between this international retirement and the next instalment or two.Warner himself has places to be and has never been afraid to take the aerial route – as evidenced by a transparent attempt to skip the speeches at his brother’s wedding. But what does the future hold, beyond T20 leagues and stints in the commentary box? The Light Roller looks at some likely options…Related

Hafeez says 'inconsistent umpiring' and 'technology curse' cost Pakistan the MCG Test

When did we all start loving David Warner?

Warner: I want to be remembered as exciting and entertaining

Head honcho at X/Twitter
Once known for playing fast and loose on social media, Warner has become something of a guru. He TikTok-ed his way into everyone’s good books during the first Covid lockdown and recently admitted that he lets his wife check over his tweets before he presses send – which sounds like the sort of wisdom Elon Musk could benefit from. The next James Bond
Why not upgrade that licence to thrill? There was a glimpse of Warner’s box-office appeal in the aforementioned helicopter dash to BBL duty – although, disappointingly, he missed the opportunity to parachute out of the chopper and into the stadium Daniel Craig-style. Can probably already handle a Walther PPK, not so sure about a British accent. Famously used to instruct players mixing the drinks during Test matches that he liked his shaken, not stirred.Social Justice Warner
The Aussies are all about being woke these days, but we should have realised back when he was taking Joe Root to task in a Birmingham Walkabout for mocking people with beards that Warner has long been on the side of the righteous. His chequered past – Usman Khawaja’s mum calls him “Shaitan”, and he has been reformed more times than a pack of supermarket ham – arguably makes him uniquely qualified to lecture us on where we’re going wrong.Bluey x Davey
Once the attack dog in Australia’s attempts to ruffle their opponents in the field, Warner is now perfectly placed to join ‘s cast of family-friendly cartoon canines. Loves his daughters? Check. Adept at coming up with wacky and heartwarming ways to pass the time? Check. Good for a game of backyard cricket? Check. The guy who does the voice of Bandit should start getting worried.Opens chain of hardware stores
Seriously, if he’s going to get sledged about sandpaper for the rest of his career he might as well try to earn a crust from it. The marketing material practically writes itself: “Warner’s Premium Grade – erases even the most regrettable errors.”

****

After math: Smith crunches the numbers on the FTP and it’s not looking good•Getty ImagesTalking of Australia openers, Steven Smith has taken his first-in-the-nets-last-out approach to its logical conclusion by successfully petitioning to be Warner’s replacement. Smith, it seems, was bored of sitting around talking to his team-mates and pretending to like crosswords before a couple of wickets fell and he could fidget his way out to the middle, so decided to seek a new challenge. For a man whose problem-solving approach to batting has long had a touch of Zack Galifianakis math about it, this makes sense – but we can’t help but wonder if Smith’s not-inconsiderable cricketing acumen might be put to better use. Never mind dealing with new-ball swing and fullish lengths, couldn’t Smith challenge himself by trying to fix the international calendar or discover the true meaning of Matthew Hayden?

****

. No, that is not the latest Pakistani rip-off of the Indiana Jones franchise – although there were some epic feelgood lolz about their recent tour down under. Pakistan played good cricket, Pakistan played bad cricket, Pakistan gave gifts to their hosts at Christmas (and that’s before we get to dropping all those catches or resting their star bowler). But it was Hafeez, the new team director, who veered back into more traditional territory by blaming “inconsistent umpiring and technology curse” for his side’s defeat in the second Test, at the MCG. That and the dropped catches, of course. He went on to conclude: “When you factor in all the booby traps, implacable supernatural forces and time-travelling Nazis, it’s fair to say we never stood a chance.”

Keith Jackson shares what he’s "heard" from Rangers on Thelwell’s Ibrox position

Many Rangers supporters want to see sporting director Kevin Thelwell replaced, and now a big claim has emerged regarding his position of power at Ibrox.

Thelwell feeling the heat at Rangers

The Gers’ 3-0 defeat away to Brann in the Europa League on Thursday has done little to silence the dissenting voices, with Danny Rohl experiencing a sobering life in charge at Ibrox. It is hard to blame the German, but this will only increase the magnitude of the job being asked of him.

There are high-profile characters galore at Rangers who are under huge pressure, including sporting director Thelwell, with former defender David Weir mentioned as an option to replace him by Heart & Hand.

There is no doubt that Thelwell hasn’t hit the ground running in his role, having arrived from Everton at the end of last season, and unless something drastic changes, it is hard to see him remaining in the job for too long.

The same applies to chairman Andrew Cavenegh and CEO Patrick Stewart, and now a big claim has dropped that highlights the level of power Thelwell has at Rangers at the moment.

Thelwell influencing team decisions at Ibrox

Speaking on Hotline Live [Ibrox News], journalist Keith Jackson claimed that Thelwell actually helped pick Rangers’ starting XI against Dundee United last weekend, and may have also influenced the line-up vs Brann.

“What I’ve heard, whether it’s right or wrong, but I suspect it’s correct – I think Thelwell had a hand in picking the team at the weekend when Steven Smith was in charge. Would it surprise me if there was a little bit of influence from the sporting director in that lineup (vs Brann)? Not in the slightest.”

This update perfectly illustrates the control Thelwell has at Rangers, and many will feel that him picking the team at home to Dundee United only undermined the job that Smith was doing. Not only that, but the Gers failed to win the game, falling further behind Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts in the process.

The 51-year-old Englishman has a huge amount to do if he is to win round the masses, and despite only being sporting director for a matter of months, the writing is arguably already on the wall for him, having blown a huge amount of money on the struggling

Youssef Chermiti and decimated the defensive ranks in the transfer window.

Rangers now told to replace Kevin Thelwell with "recruitment mastermind"

Would this be an upgrade for the Gers?

1 ByHenry Jackson Oct 24, 2025

Thelwell’s biggest hope of staying on at Rangers is enjoying a strong working relationship with Rohl, and helping oversee massive improvements on and off the pitch, but even then, his critics are unlikely to go away any time soon.

Farke has found a new Dallas-type player in “unbelievable” Leeds star

da fazobetai: Leeds United aren’t going to be heading straight back down to the Championship without at least putting in a fight.

da betsul: The last time the Whites were relegated back down to the EFL’s elite league, they only managed to accumulate a sorry 31 points from 38 matches, with a concerning 78 goals leaked.

Already, with just nine games played this time around, Leeds are occupying 15th spot in the Premier League with a promising 11 points tallied up, with an early Brenden Aaronson effort sealing a third league win of the season against relegation rivals West Ham United on Friday night.

This promising start bodes well for Leeds being able to remain as a Premier League team, with Match of the Day’s Gabby Logan revealing at the weekend that the last ten promoted sides who have got to that 11-point total after ten games have all beaten the drop.

Leeds will just want to remain steady as wins slowly but surely continue to be picked up, with Stuart Dallas previously playing the role of being a calming and reliable presence perfectly when past anxiety crept in at Elland Road.

Why Stuart Dallas is a Leeds icon

While the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter, and Raphinha stick out in recent memory as flashy entertainers in West Yorkshire, the Northern Irishman always stood out as being “Mr Reliable” for the Whites, as he was once affectionately labelled by former Premier League great Kevin Phillips.

267 Leeds appearances would come Dallas’ way in total, with the 34-year-old only getting better as time went on in a Whites shirt, even as he navigated the tough step-up to the Premier League.

Eight goals would fall into the adaptable number 15’s lap during his first-ever top-flight campaign, with his ability to line up all across the pitch – which included Dallas even lining up as a defensive midfielder on one occasion – making him a dependable asset right up until an unfortunate injury ended his playing days.

As former Leeds manager David O’Leary put it back in 2021, Dallas epitomised the tag of being an “unsung hero” throughout his long-standing affiliation with the club, with the one-time Championship title winner always putting in a top shift when pulling on Leeds white.

Daniel Farke could well feel he’s unearthed a new Dallas-style revelation in his current ranks, with the ace in question similarly full-blooded with his commitment to the Leeds cause so far this season.

Farke's "unbelievable" new Stuart Dallas

Leeds’ impressive summer recruitment has undoubtedly helped them to keep their heads above the relegation zone during the early stages of the 38-game campaign.

Indeed, Noah Okafor has already been heralded as a key “difference-maker” by Leeds-based content creator Oscar Mario, and it’s hard to disagree with that assessment, as the lightning-quick winger already has two Premier League goals in his back pocket. Alongside the Swiss international, Sean Longstaff has also stood out as a sterling bit of business, having only cost a reasonable £12m to obtain back in July.

Already, Longstaff has been able to endear himself to his new set of supporters by hammering home strikes such as this one he emphatically fired home against AFC Bournemouth in late September, with Dallas still being remembered to this day for being a player that similarly scored some memorable goals, namely that famous breakaway strike that was put away at Manchester City under Marcelo Bielsa when Leeds had been reduced to ten men.

More importantly, though, as Leeds face another battle against the drop, the ex-Newcastle United midfielder has also displayed plenty of bite and fight that’s reminiscent of the now-retired 34-year-old in his Elland Road prime, with a combined eight tackles and duels won last time out against the Hammers.

All-in-all, Longstaff just seems to have that perfect blend of skill and determination that Dallas also possessed in spades, with his eagerness to get stuck in and battle also regularly being coupled with a hunger to create openings and play on the front-foot, as seen in him creating a high five big chances so far this season, which hasn’t been surpassed by anyone else in the division.

He is, of course, still in the infancy of his Elland Road career, but if he keeps going in this same electric manner, he will surely etch his name into the West Yorkshire outfit’s hall-of-fame as another “unbelievable” – as he was once branded by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer – Premier League performer, alongside some revered company.

1) Palmeiras – 49 pontos
2) Fluminense – 8 pontos a menos
3) Flamengo – 9 pontos a menos
4) Corinthians – 10 pontos a menos
5) Internacional – 10 pontos a menos
6) Athletico-PR – 11 pontos a menos
7) Atlético-MG – 14 pontos a menos
8) Santos – 16 pontos a menos
