Danny Briggs joins Warwickshire from Sussex on three-year deal

Left-arm spinner moves to his third county with ‘strong desire to play at the highest levels again’

George Dobell05-Oct-2020Warwickshire have signed left-arm spinner Danny Briggs on a three-year deal.Briggs, the highest wicket-taker in the history of England’s domestic T20 competition, has been limited to a role as a white-ball bowler at Sussex in recent times but hopes to feature in all formats of the game for Warwickshire.Although Briggs has not played a first-class game since June 2019, he previously became the youngest English spin bowler since Derek Underwood to 100 first-class wickets and will challenge for a place in a Warwickshire side learning to live without Jeetan Patel, who has retired. But it is Briggs’ white-ball experience that sticks out. Having featured in a Hampshire side that won three limited-overs trophies and made it to T20 Finals day for six years in succession, Briggs also represented England in seven T20Is and one ODI.”For several years Danny has been widely recognised as one of the leading spinners in the county game and he is an excellent addition to our squad,” Warwickshire’s Sport Director, Paul Farbrace, said.”Danny is vastly experienced across all three formats of the game and he knows what it takes to win trophies, having previously been part of teams that won both white-ball competitions. We look forward to welcoming him into the Bears squad when the training programme for the 2021 season gets underway in November.”Warwickshire will be the 29-year-old Briggs’ third county. After breaking into the Hampshire first team in 2009 aged 18, he moved to Sussex at the start of 2016. Sussex had offered him a new contract and expressed their disappointment at his departure.”I’ve had a great time at Hove over the last four years, but I’m delighted to make this move and join Warwickshire,” Briggs said. “I like Paul Farbrace’s exciting vision for the club, and it aligns with what I would like to achieve in the coming years.”I’m looking to be part of all-format success and I haven’t given up a strong desire to play at the highest levels again.”It is, perhaps worth noting Briggs’ reference to “Farbrace’s exciting vision.” ESPNcricinfo understands Farbrace has recently decided to refresh the coaching set-up at Edgbaston and that some of the senior coaching staff are currently in dispute with the club over severance packages.Keith Greenfield, the performance director at Sussex, said: “We are all disappointed that Danny will be leaving the club and not signing the multi-year contract extension that was offered to him in these challenging financial times for cricket and Sussex.”We couldn’t have done anymore in this respect. Danny feels at this time joining another county is in his best interests, and we have to respect his decision.”Sussex have also lost Laurie Evans to Surrey and decided not to offer Luke Wells a new contract.

Chelsea look to repeat Fernandez trick by signing £103m "future star"

It was another weekend to forget for Chelsea Football Club as they found a way to drop points to a ten-man Burnley side at home.

Mauricio Pochettino has been unable to create a coherent and effective team from the plethora of talented players at his disposal, and the pressure is now starting to mount.

It was the sort of game in which no player can come out looking good, but there are still a number of seriously impressive players in the Blues' squad who are having a mediocre season.

One of those players is World Cup winner Enzo Fernández, who has shown genuine quality at points this season, and now it looks like the club could be about to replicate his signing with another young talent in the summer.

Latest Chelsea transfer news

According to a report from Portuguese publication O Jogo (via Sport Witness), several top-flight clubs, including Chelsea, are interested in signing Benfica's talented youngster Joao Neves this summer.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Blues have been 'keen for a while' but will have to compete with Liverpool, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain for his signature.

The other sides won't be the only obstacle for the Pensioners to contend with, however, as the report also reveals that the young midfielder's supposed release clause stands at around €120m, which is about £103m, although it is said that As Águias want to increase that to around €150, which converts to about £128m.

It would be an undeniably expensive deal to complete and arguably a massive gamble from Todd Boehly and Co. Still, by signing Fernandez from the same club just over a year ago, they've proven that they are willing to sanction such deals.

How Neves compares to Fernandez

Now, if Chelsea were to complete this signing, there would be a couple of apparent similarities between the two players, notably that they'll cost over £100m and come from the same club, Benfica.

There is also the fact that the pair are both incredibly talented midfielders and play – or played in Fernandez's case – a crucial role at the heart of the Lisbon outfit. Still, with Neves being just 19 years old, fans of the west Londoners shouldn't expect him to come in and immediately impact the first team, regardless of his price.

Benfica's Joao Neves

However, his genuinely impressive performances in Portugal suggest that there is a possibility he could thrive in the Premier League.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across the next best 14 competitions, the "complete" midfielder, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, ranks in the top 2% of midfielders for attempted passes, the top 3% for blocks, the top 8% for tackles, the top 9% for pass completion, the top 10% for successful take-ons, and the top 11% for progressive passes, all per 90.

While those are undeniably impressive stats, they would likely come down slightly in a tougher league, such as the Premier League. However, the fact that the Tavira-born gem is already performing to such a high level suggests he could adapt to a more challenging league with time and proper management and guidance.

Moreover, with his preferred position being more of a defensive midfield role, he could well partner Fernandez at the heart of the next great Chelsea team, learning and growing alongside a fellow Benfica prodigy, although Moises Caicedo may be less than enthused about that prospect.

In all, while the enormous sum of money involved in any deal would make this something of a gamble from Boehly and Co, that hasn't stopped them in the past, and if Mango is correct in his assessment of Neves as being a "future star", then it may well be a gamble worth taking.

Having previously helped the Albiceleste to Copa America and World Cup glory with his ability to win spot-kick mind games, Martinez is in the process of chasing down another continental crown. He repelled two efforts from 12 yards as Argentina battled past Ecuador in a 2024 Copa quarter-final.

Rodrigo De Paul has said of having Martinez between the sticks in the most pressurised of situations: “We have an animal in goal. What he is doing is crazy. He deserves it. He loves these colours. He gives us a lot of security and peace of mind. We try to do the same for him but in these important moments he is always there.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Argentina almost threw the game away against Ecuador, as Lisandro Martinez’s opener was cancelled out in the 91st minute, but they held their nerve despite seeing talismanic captain Messi clip a Panenka penalty against the crossbar. De Paul added on reaching the last four: “We knew that the match was going to be difficult. We would like to play better with the ball sometimes. Although we always have to be self-critical, there are many things that are not allowing us to play our game and everything we have been showing. But the team ran and scored. There was a great effort from everyone. I am very happy to be playing in the semi-finals again. In the last four tournaments we have reached this stage, almost until the last day. I think we have to be proud of everything we are achieving.”

Nottingham Forest must axe star who earns £70k-p/w more than Awoniyi

Nottingham Forest have demonstrated their scattergun transfer approach in the market since their promotion back to the Premier League in May 2022.

Since the play-off final triumph at Wembley, the Reds have made 34 new additions, with owner Evangelos Marinakis investing over £200m on new players in the hope of establishing the club as a modern-day Premier League outfit.

The club have unearthed some gems from all over the globe, with youngsters Murillo, Danilo and Nicolas Dominguez all joining since promotion with the trio proving excellent value for money – potentially bringing the club a hefty profit in the years ahead.

Murillo

Not all of Forest's signings have been successful, however, with players such as Emmanuel Dennis and Giulian Biancone joining the club for fees over £10m but failing to make an impact on Trentside – with the latter leaving the club permanently after making just one substitute appearance for the club.

Despite the duo's lack of impact at Forest, one player appears to have been a complete disaster after his arrival at the club during last summer's transfer window.

Divock Origi's Forest record

After another frantic window at the City Ground, Forest brought in another 14 new signings with the Reds looking to push on from the 16th-placed finish in the Premier League 2022/23 season.

The club invested all over the pitch, with the signing of Divock Origi on loan from Serie A side AC Milan bolstering the frontline – the Belgian becoming the Reds' third striker behind Taiwo Awoniyi and Chris Wood.

Divock Origi at Nottingham Forest.

Since his arrival in August, the former Liverpool marksman has featured 11 times for Forest, only two of which have come from the start, with Origi being subbed after 26 minutes against Bournemouth following Willy Boly's controversial red card.

The 28-year-old has yet to register a goal or an assist during his time at the City Ground so far, with the 6 foot 1 dud failing to make a real impact under boss Nuno Espírito Santo.

How much Divock Origi has cost Nottingham Forest

The deal to bring Origi to the City Ground saw the club pay 100% of the striker's wages, with Forest currently paying the Belgian £125k-per-week – the highest salary of anyone within the Forest squad.

Origi's loan move to the City Ground has seen the club fork out £3m on wages so far. By the end of the season, the deal will have seen the club spend £6.25m – a huge amount for a player who is unlikely to sign permanently.

Divock Origi in action for Nottingham Forest.

His weekly wage of £125k is £40k-per-week more than second-highest earner Felipe and £70k-per-week more than current Reds starting striker Awoniyi, as per Capology – an obscene amount given his current goal return during his time at the club.

Although he's previously scored goals in the Premier League – netting 22 in total – the move for Origi has proved to be a disaster for both parties, with Forest losing a lot of money on a striker who is only featuring for a maximum of 20 minutes per game.

The loanee was linked with a potential move to the MLS in January, but no move materialised with Forest seemingly stuck with the costly forward until the end of the season.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Excitement has continued to build around teenage wonderkid Sullivan since he made history as the youngest MLS debutant in July 2024. He was aged just 14 years and 293 days at the time, with a place in the history books being snatched from former prodigy Freddy Adu.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Adu has been used as a cautionary tale down to the years when it comes to unfilled potential, as he was billed as the next Pele after making his own breakthrough at 14. He went on to endure a nomadic career at club level, but did earn 17 caps for the United States.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Sullivan will be hoping to fare better than that, but there are many stories to be found of shining lights that burned out before illuminating the big time – with there tales of that variety to be told around the world.

  • WHAT FRIEDEL SAID

Friedel, speaking with the online casino authority Casino.org, told GOAL when asked about the habit of writing exciting youngsters off if they ultimately become anything less than superstars: "Correct, and it’s wrong to think that way.

"I’ve sat in the Premier League at Tottenham in the academy when deciding between two or three players to take up to the next age group at 13, 14, 15. Sometimes what you’re choosing between is so strange. At one stage, Cameron Lancaster was, in a lot of people’s eyes, better than Harry Kane. And he was, by the way. He had terrible injuries. You are choosing at such young ages. Harry has become this world icon and Cam, unfortunately, could have done really well. He had some terrible knee issues.

"You just don’t know what’s going to happen at young ages. When you build someone up too much and they don’t score 25 goals, 25 assists every season, everyone’s thinking that they can’t play."

EFL clash at risk of cancellation due to 'rare fungal infection' in wild development ahead of weekend's fixtures

Saturday’s League Two clash between Notts County and Fleetwood Town could be thrown into chaos by an issue no one saw coming, a fungal disease ravaging the pitch at Meadow Lane. Officials have confirmed that a final inspection will take place on Friday morning, leaving the game’s status hanging in the balance until the last moment.

Fungal disease leaves pitch in jeopardyFriday inspection to decide fate of the clashGrounds team battle to save Meadow LaneFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The issue stems from a soil-borne pathogen that thrives in warm and humid weather, precisely the conditions Britain has endured this summer. Once established, it destroys perennial ryegrass at frightening speed, stripping the pitch of healthy turf and leaving behind dead patches unsuitable for competitive football.

The make-or-break call will be made at 11am on Friday, when a qualified match official joins forces with a representative from the Sports Turf Research Institute to assess the playing surface. If the fungus continues to spread or the recovery work proves insufficient, the fixture may be forced into postponement.

WHAT NOTTS COUNTY SAID

County’s staff admitted that a large amount of damaged grass had to be ripped up earlier this week in an urgent bid to salvage the surface. Replacement work and treatments have been rolled out under a rapid-response plan, with the club hopeful that the intervention will be enough to save the game.

In a public statement, they said: "Since the diagnosis, our grounds team have worked tirelessly to contain the issue and implement a recovery strategy – and we would like to stress that this highly unfortunate development is no fault of any individual or the club. We expect the pitch to make a steady recovery over the coming weeks."

Notts County currently sit 13th in the League Two table, with two wins and two defeats in their opening six outings. A win on Saturday could push them closer to the top half and restore momentum. All attention now shifts to Friday’s decisive inspection. Should the pitch pass muster, the game will go ahead. If not, it will mark one of the rarest postponements in recent memory, a clash stopped not by weather, protests, or policing, but by a fungus.
