'He was the one guy that went out and changed the wicketkeeping mould for all of us'

Kumar Sangakkara, Brad Haddin, Alec Stewart and Alex Carey talk about Adam Gilchrist’s influence on cricket and their own careers

05-Nov-2019Kumar Sangakkara
Not just me, he influenced selectors as well to look at wicketkeeping from a different perspective completely – to understand that a wicketkeeper has to be highly skilled, but at the same time, if he can’t contribute with the bat, then picking him becomes quite difficult. So he challenged wicketkeepers to improve their batting, to understand how to bat with the tail.He defined a role for a batsman-wicketkeeper or a wicketkeeper-batsman, whichever way you describe it. You become a true allrounder: you have exceptional skills both with the gloves and with the bat.The unique thing about his batting was just that kind of abandon and freedom he played with. He assessed situations really well. He was a very high-quality batsman in terms of adapting to pace and spin and different types of wickets. Freddie Flintoff had him in trouble a few times coming around the wicket and making him edge the ball to the slips, but apart from that, he really decimated bowling attacks. He was never afraid of getting out: it was a case of imposing himself and taking the game away from the opposition. Many times he walked into tough situations and made a huge impact, to take Australia into a winning position. In 2007, Gilchrist smashed Monty Panesar for 24 in an over on his way to the then second-fastest Test century, off 57 balls•Getty ImagesAnd his glovework, keeping to Shane Warne, Stuart MacGill, was absolutely exceptional.A lot of specialist wicketkeepers won’t like Adam much because he sounded the death knell for that specialist’s role. But people like us, MS Dhoni, would be grateful for that change of mindset he influenced. He was awesome to watch. He was a wonderful cricketer and a wonderful ambassador for the game.Brad Haddin
He definitely changed the role of the wicketkeeper-batsman. Before Gilly came along, the batting was a bonus. But the way he revolutionised the role, you had to become an allrounder and contribute more with the bat.Everyone knew the talent he had for a long time; he had played a lot of one-day cricket before he got the chance to play Tests, and it was just refreshing to see how he came straight in and put his mark on the game and didn’t take a backward step.I was pretty content with who I was, and if I had tried to be an Adam Gilchrist, I would have ended up in a quiet corner of the room. I’d seen it happen a lot with people trying to follow Shane Warne. But these guys were greats of the game, so it was really important for me that I took Gilly out of the equation and just tried to be the best cricketer I could.

“Whether he went in at 180 for 5 or 350 for 5, he would play the situation, and that is cricket intelligence”Alec Stewart

Adam can come up in a conversation over a couple of beers as one of the greatest to ever play the game. Following him, you just had to be really conscious that you were comfortable being who you were and not try to do things that others tried to do. You had to make sure you brought to the table what you were strong with. One thing for a keeper is understanding what your role is, and that’s to change the momentum in games and get through some tough situations. Adam was one out of the hat: he could do things that no one else could. So you’ve just got to be sure you understand the role. Yes, you have to contribute with the bat these days – we’d all love to contribute Adam’s way.Alec Stewart
Before Gilly arrived, in a way, I might have started the batsman-wicketkeeper phenomenon. I was the reserve wicketkeeper to Jack Russell when I started my England career. But I was in the team primarily as an opening batsman. Andy Flower and Kumar Sangakkara did similar roles. We were all specialist batsmen, playing in the top six in the batting order and doubling up as keeper in the team. But Gilly took it to another level because of how he played. He had taken the place of Ian Healy in Australia, the best wicketkeeper I had played against. So Gilly came in as a lesser-quality keeper, but as a better, and game-changing, batsman. Even in Australian domestic cricket, he had replaced Tim Zoehrer at Western Australia, where he had moved to further his career. So big gloves and shoes to fill, replacing Zoehrer, and an even bigger place replacing Heals in Australia.Because of the way he batted, Gilly silenced the majority of his doubters straightaway. He was an unbelievable batsman, probably the best I have seen at No. 7 [in Test cricket] and opening in ODIs. Apart from being a wonderful timer, his shot selection and the ability to put the bowlers on the back foot so quickly was, in my opinion, his biggest strength. He imposed himself straightaway.Gilchrist’s talent as a batsman almost made it easy to forget he kept wicket to some of Australia’s most formidable bowlers•Getty ImagesWhether he went in at 180 for 5 or 350 for 5, he would play the situation, and that is cricket intelligence. But he would also turn the scoreboard around more times than not in the space of a session. One-eighty for 5, you would think could you roll the side for 280, but he would get them to 350-400 because of the quality of the player he was.Coming to his wicketkeeping, you wouldn’t put him in the Ian Healy class. I am not being rude here, and I hope Gilly would agree with me. Having said that, Gilly was a very, very efficient wicketkeeper. Put that alongside his world-class batting and you had a game-changing allrounder.Although a few of us I mentioned earlier had already influenced the selection of wicketkeepers with our batting, the arrival of Gilly and his instant success meant that the policy of selecting just the best gloveman regardless of him offering next to nothing with the bat was over. The wicketkeeper now has to do both to the right standards in international cricket, and that is thanks to Gilly. I am a massive fan of his and what he has done for the game of cricket and how he played.Alex Carey
Gilly was always my hero growing up. I was a wicketkeeper and a left-hand batter all through my junior ranks. I couldn’t wait to get the Greg Chappell cricket catalogue and buy Gilly’s gloves – the orange ones that he had.He was one guy who went out and changed the wicketkeeping mould for a lot of us, and he’s just one of those exciting players that everyone loved watching. There were a few favourite innings. I still go back to watch the Ashes Test at the WACA Ground where he was dancing down the wicket and hitting Monty Panesar miles, and scoring that unbelievable hundred. That’s one that stays with me.

“The strength of Gilly is to make sure that everything off the field is going well and you can go out and play with a big smile on your face”Alex Carey

I love how he took the game on, batting at No. 7. As a wicketkeeper our job hopefully is to come in and do some damage at the back end of an innings. In the shorter format he was pretty aggressive at the top. There were lots of exciting packages to watch from Gilchrist, along with his keeping too: some of those hangers he takes, the old throw-the-ball-up-with-the-left-hand, legs in the air – he was amazing.I’m fortunate enough to put on the green and gold and play some Big Bash and to have formed a relationship with Adam Gilchrist. Whenever I see a message from him, it always makes me pretty excited. It probably started with him as a commentator and myself getting into the Strikers team. The funny thing with Gilly and I is, we don’t really talk a lot about cricket when we catch up, which I think is a good thing as well. We have a great relationship away from the game, talking about footy, talking about family, rather than the skill sets on the field. There are times when I might need some advice from him, and he’s more than willing to do that. We had a quick catch-up in Manchester going back 12 months, which was fantastic. I think the strength of Gilly is to make sure that everything off the field is going well and you can go out and play with a big smile on your face.A bit of advice he gave me is making sure that every time I go out and play, it’s [about keeping in mind] what the team needs from me to help win a game of cricket. That’s something that has stuck with me through all three formats.

Sky Sports: Leicester eyeing 4-2-3-1 boss who is also wanted by Southampton

Leicester City now want an “unbelievable” 4-2-3-1 manager, who is also wanted by Southampton, to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy, according to Sky Sports.

Leicester's relegation piles pressure on Van Nistelrooy

The Foxes’ relegation to the Championship from the Premier League was confirmed on Sunday afternoon, in what has been a disastrous season for the club. They have just 18 points to their name after 33 games, winning just four games in total.

Leicester City eye move for new 40 y/o manager who has same agent as Vardy

He’s been in the Championship before.

ByCharlie Smith Apr 9, 2025

The club chiefs hoped that Van Nistelrooy’s arrival would springboard the club into staying away from the drop zone, but just three wins in 17 games have not been enough to keep them in the Premier League.

That means the Foxes now have to prepare for life back in the Championship, and according to Sky Sports, Van Nistelrooy is expected to meet with Leicester’s hierarchy this week to discuss his future.

The Dutchman is expected to remain in charge for the remainder of the Premier League campaign, but there are doubts as to whether he will stay going into the summer, as both sides are unsure about continuing the relationship going into the Championship.

Leicester City managerRuudvanNistelrooy

Another concern for Leicester is that sacking van Nistelrooy before the end of June would cause problems for them meeting PSR obligations, as the Dutchman is under contract until 2027, and therefore, he would need to be paid off.

Leicester want a 4-2-3-1 boss who is also wanted by Southampton

So while the club chiefs weigh up what to do with van Nistelrooy, according to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, Leicester are now interested in appointing Danny Rohl as their new manager after drawing up a managerial shortlist.

Dorsett reports that the Foxes have already drawn up a list of candidates to possibly replace Van Nistelrooy, and Rohl is one name that is under consideration. As well as Rohl, Leicester are also interested in former England interim manager Lee Carsley and ex-Southampton boss Russell Martin.

Rohl, who has been dubbed “unbelievable” by player Josh Windass, is a manager who continues to impress in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday, as finances and ownership at the club are making his job difficult. However, the German has managed to guide the Owls to mid-table in the second tier, 10 points above the relegation zone and 10 points adrift of the top six.

The 35-year-old, whose preferred formation as manager is 4-2-3-1, will not be an easy man to get for the Foxes, as Southampton have made Rohl a top target in their search for a new boss.

Sheffield Wednesday is Rohl’s first job as a manager in England, but the work he’s done in guiding the club away from relegation last season and what he’s achieved in this campaign have now made him a highly rated coach in the second tier.

Carey, Marsh carry Australia home in tense finish at Hagley Oval

The pair combined for a brisk 140-run sixth-wicket partnership to inch Australia closer to victory

Tristan Lavalette11-Mar-2024Alex Carey produced a brilliant knock under pressure to crush New Zealand’s bid for a famous victory as Australia ran down a tough 279 runs in a nerve-jangling chase at Hagley Oval.Australia’s bid to win the second Test and seal the series 2-0 appeared in major trouble at 80 for 5 after the early wicket of Travis Head on day four. But Carey and Mitchell Marsh, who made 80 after being dropped on 28, combined for a brisk 140-run sixth-wicket partnership to inch Australia within 59 runs.Debutant Ben Sears, bowling in the mid-140 kph, flipped the match on its head with the wickets of Marsh and Mitchell Starc on consecutive deliveries to revive New Zealand’s hopes. Carey, however, was unperturbed and finished Australia’s hero with an unbeaten 98.He found calm support through Pat Cummins, who again helped Australia over the line much like he memorably did at Edgbaston in last year’s Ashes. Cummins made 32 and hit the winning boundary at an increasingly gloomy Hagley Oval as the batters embraced mid-pitch.Australia had only run down 279 or more in the fourth innings on 13 previous occasions and only twice since 2006. Only three teams in Test history had scored more runs after the fall of the fifth wicket in a successful fourth-innings chase. The victory capped a hectic period of Test cricket for Australia, who have played 22 Tests in the last 15 months. But they will have a long breather from the format with their next assignment not until next summer against India in a five-Test blockbuster. It was a satisfying triumph for Australia, who before this had only one won series away from home since their last Test tour of New Zealand in 2016.But New Zealand were left bitterly disappointed as their misery against Australia continued having only beaten them once in the past three decades. With their next series against Australia not due until 2026-27, several senior players in the team might never again have a chance to beat their neighbours. After a stirring fightback ever since being bowled out for 162 in their first innings, New Zealand had been in the box seat heading into the fourth day’s play, which was delayed by an hour due to rain.Resuming at 77 for 4 and needing a further 202 runs, Australia’s hopes seemingly rested with Marsh and Head who had combined for 43 runs late on day three after a top-order collapse. In overcast conditions, Marsh went for broke off Tim Southee’s first ball when he hit a bullet to backward point only for Rachin Ravindra to drop a chance. But New Zealand’s agony was short-lived when on the next delivery Head replicated Marsh’s full-blooded stroke and Will Young made no mistake at point. It completed a tough season for Head, who scored just 150 runs in 11 Test innings outside of his match-winning century against West Indies in Adelaide. With Josh Inglis breathing down his neck, Carey’s place in the team had been in the spotlight having only made two half-centuries in his previous 18 innings. Buoyed by a record-equalling 10 dismissals by an Australian wicketkeeper, Carey looked solid as he quickly moved to 19 until he was given out lbw after being trapped on the knee roll by Matt Henry bowling from around the wicket. But Carey was saved by the DRS with ball tracking deeming the ball to be sliding down the leg side. He calmly resumed his innings and kept the runs trickling along, but did have an anxious moment on 37 when Scott Kuggeleijn loudly appealed for caught behind. New Zealand unsuccessfully reviewed as their nerves heightened.Entering the innings on the back of consecutive ducks, Marsh rediscovered his form from the Australian summer as he and Carey notched their half-centuries and Australia reached lunch needing a further 105 runs.A single from Marsh after the interval notched the pair’s century partnership and reduced Australia’s deficit to under a hundred, with batting becoming easier against the older ball. New Zealand’s fading hopes seemingly rested with Henry, who was also seeking a 10-wicket haul, but Marsh continued to counterattack and whacked his bouncer for six.Southee desperately turned to Sears and it proved a masterstroke as he trapped Marsh lbw after hitting him in front of middle and leg. Marsh reviewed in the hope that the ball was sliding down the leg side, but it was upheld in an umpire’s call to spark New Zealand. It was bedlam at a near-capacity Hagley Oval when on his next delivery Sears had Starc hitting straight to square leg. Sears almost completed his hat-trick when Cummins nervously edged in front of second slip. But Sears was then thwarted by inventive batting from Carey and an unruffled Cummins, who continued his knack for ice-cool batting in run chases. Both batters endured some anxious moments as Southee reverted to Henry for one last push but it was in vain. Carey fell short of a deserved century as Cummins sealed victory with a punch through point and he let out a roar in celebration.

What's gone wrong with Mumbai Indians?

A misfiring middle order, a slightly below-par death-overs specialist, and a captain batting out of position may have all contributed to the defending champions’ horror start to the season

Vishal Dikshit27-Apr-2018A few days ago, you could sympathise with Mumbai Indians because they were putting in the performances but narrowly missing out on results. Before their last match, they had lost four out of five games; all four in the last over while defending targets, and two by one wicket. On Tuesday against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai had no one to blame but themselves. Chasing 119, they collapsed to their lowest-ever IPL total of 87 on a fresh Wankhede pitch against an attack that was without Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Billy Stanlake. What has gone wrong for them? Here are a few factors that have combined to put Mumbai Indians at the bottom of the table.ESPNcricinfo LtdMiddle-order woesMumbai’s strength during last year’s winning campaign has turned into their weakness. The personnel has remained similar, after an auction in which they attempted to retain the core of the Pandya brothers and Kieron Pollard, but that core has not fired.Mumbai’s think-tank also decided to open with Suryakumar Yadav after their first two losses, so that Rohit Sharma could add stability to the middle order. Even though Suryakumar has adapted well, the lack of runs from the Pandyas and Pollard has hurt Mumbai. In each of their six matches so far, at least one of their top-order batsmen – Evin Lewis, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar – has given them a start. The hole in the middle order was exposed the most against Delhi Daredevils, when all of their top fired to power Mumbai to 141 for 2 in 13 overs. From there, they unravelled in the attempt to accelerate and ended on 194 when they were on course for 220.Hardik Pandya’s case is unusual. He started off well in the opening match at No. 5 but has moved down to No. 7 since then, below Krunal Pandya and Pollard. Apart from two unbeaten innings of 22 and 17, he has scored nine runs across three innings while coming out to bat in the last three overs. It could be that bowlers have found out Hardik’s weakness and don’t deliver the ball in his arc anymore. When Mumbai head coach Mahela Jayawardene was asked about this, he didn’t dismiss the possibility.”We knew that there will be people bowling at a different level because we analyse other opposition, we do analyse our guys and we give them information that this is something you look forward to and this is something that we need to work on,” he said. “Every year you can’t bat the same way. If people don’t evolve and improve, there is no progress. Young guys like Hardik will learn that and need to work harder, the talent alone will not get you there. Reading the game and thinking about the game, that’s the part they need to keep learning and especially with international bowlers coming and doing various things, you have to evolve, otherwise you won’t be able to be consistent.”ESPNcricinfo LtdWhere is Pollard?Pollard’s transition from a fixed asset to a non-performing one seems to be happening rapidly this season. He doesn’t bowl in the IPL anymore, he hasn’t won his side a match in times of crisis, and he takes one of the four overseas spots. Apart from the lack of runs, it is also his position that is under scrutiny now. He has been coming out to bat with not much time left in the innings and is striking at 88.23 in his first 10 balls, the fourth-worst of all batsmen to have faced a minimum of 30 balls this season. Will Mumbai now look to move him up the order or will they drop him altogether?ESPNcricinfo LtdBumrah’s 19th-over horrorsJasprit Bumrah has made such a reputation for himself in the death overs that even a small drop-off in his performance leads you to wonder what’s wrong with him. He has bowled well mostly – his Smart Economy Rate this season is 6.36 – but a couple of poor 19th overs have cost Mumbai games they might otherwise have won.The first time was when Chennai Super Kings needed 27 from 12 balls and Bumrah started the penultimate over. He attempted to bowl the yorker four times in the first five balls and got only one of them right. The other three went for sixes off Dwayne Bravo’s bat. Bumrah got him out off the sixth ball, but only after his over had gone for 20.That being the tournament opener, it is possible his confidence took a hit. Against Rajasthan Royals, Bumrah bowled a superb 17th over, varying his pace beautifully to pick up two wickets, and only conceding one run. When the 19th over began, Royals needed 28. Bumrah bowled short and wide twice, to Jofra Archer and K Gowtham, who both slapped him for four, overstepped on one occasion, and failed to nail his yorker even once. He leaked 18 in the over and Mumbai suffered close defeat.ESPNcricinfo LtdIs Rohit batting in the right position?Rohit Sharma clarified after his 94 against Royal Challengers Bangalore that he would continue in the middle order to allow Suryakumar and Kishan to flourish at the top. Rohit may have been batting at No. 4 on that particular day, but he walked out in the first over, with Mumbai 0 for 2, effectively opening the innings – which is where he bats for India.Opening works for Rohit because he is at his best when he has time to get his eye in, and time is a luxury in T20 cricket. In all T20s since 2015, he has a first-10-balls strike rate of 117.6, with a dot-ball percentage of nearly 50 in that time. If he opens for Mumbai, he can afford to go slow early on, since he will have Lewis or Kishan to do the early hitting at the other end. Once he’s set, Rohit is capable of murderous acceleration: once he has faced 30 balls, he strikes at 177.3. That was exactly the case against Royal Challengers; he was on 40 off 30 after 14 overs, and then launched into the quick bowlers to score 54 runs off his next 22 balls. As captain, Rohit might be thinking long-term by promoting Suryakumar and Kishan up the order. But given the situation Mumbai are in, he will have to prioritise immediate results over developing younger players. And for that, moving back up to open might not be a bad idea.

Molineux returns to Cricket Australia contract list after all-format comeback

Sophie Molineux has returned to Cricket Australia’s central contract list following her successful comeback across formats.Molineux, who was dropped from the list two years ago, has played Tests, ODIs and T20Is over the last two months after an extended period on the sidelines due to a variety of injuries, most recently an ACL. Those appearances had been enough for her to earn an upgrade to a contract before confirmation of the 17 names in 2024-25 group.Related
