VB Chandrasekhar: Affable and daring, jovial and unorthodox

As batsman, coach, and the man who snagged MS Dhoni for CSK, VB Chandrasekhar possessed both daring and clear thinking

Deivarayan Muthu and Saurabh Somani16-Aug-2019VB Chandrasekhar may have hit a 56-ball fourth-innings century in the 1988 Irani Trophy against Rest of India, to go with 160 in the quarter-final and 89 in the final of the Ranji Trophy that preceded it, but he might be remembered more for what he did in a spellbound auction room ahead of the inaugural IPL almost three decades later. It was Chandrasekhar who raised the paddle to signify that Chennai Super Kings were bidding USD 1.5 million for MS Dhoni. That was 30% of the budget cap on one player, and the size of the bid meant Dhoni got a higher pay packet than even the five ‘icon’ players (Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh), who would each be paid 15% more than whatever their respective franchises’ highest bids were. And if it is for that one act that people remember the former India batsman who died on August 15, six days before he would have turned 58, it will still be fitting. The otherwise straightforward act had the daring and audacity of his strokeplay, the foresight of his time as national selector, the ability to spot talent that he had as coach.Described as a witty, jovial character who was an excellent reader of the game, Chandrasekhar had become a familiar figure in his later years as a commentator on domestic cricket and an owner of one of the teams in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. His career as player, selector and coach meant he had a bird’s-eye view of the game as well as an insider’s perspective, and the cricketing community in India recalled his contribution to the game with fondness.”I am shocked and completely taken aback,” R Ashwin told ESPNcricinfo in a text message. “He was a man who garnered respect wherever he went in the cricketing fraternity, had a great eye for talent and his service to game is beyond my limits of expression.”VV Kumar, who played two Tests for India and had a first-class career spanning 1955-56 to 1976-77, was Chandrasekhar’s neighbour and had seen his progress from close quarters. “I knew him for more than 30 years,” Kumar said. “He had that cricketing brain to judge a player, whether he is good enough or whether he could be tried in a different role and turned into a better cricketer. He had that great temperament, both as a batsman and a selector.

“He had that cricketing brain to judge a player, whether he is good enough or whether he could be tried in a different role and turned into a better cricketer”VV Kumar, the former India legspinner

“After [former India opener] Kris Srikkanth, the only batsman from Tamil Nadu who could hit any bowler – pacer or spinner – was Chandrasekhar. If you go deeper, Srikkanth might give a chance to a bowler, but Chandrasekhar never gave the bowler a chance to settle down. He had that capacity to hit any bowler, but unfortunately did not get enough chances for India.”The special thing about VB’s hitting was that he could pick the length half-a-second earlier than the others. Even if you changed lengths, (he would jump down the track and hit you). Even if a coach or a captain would tell VB not to hit in the air, he would not listen and back himself to hit over the top.”He also had a great eye for talent. Suresh Raina wasn’t a T20 star, but VB picked him [for CSK] and he still continues to play for them. And Dhoni, of course.”Kiran More, who was Chandrasekhar’s India team-mate and later served on the same selection panel from 2004 to 2006 – a fairly tumultuous time in Indian cricket with Sourav Ganguly sacked as captain and Greg Chappell’s stormy tenure as coach – had memories of a player who trained hard and a selector whose opinions were well worth paying heed to.”There’s a beautiful ground [in New Zealand], the New Plymouth Ground. There’s a hill on that ground and we named it ‘VB hill’. Because what happened is, Bishan [Singh Bedi, the Indian team manager then] made him run every day, with pads on, up and down the hill. He would do it at least seven to eight times during the day.Getty Images”When the match [a four-day game against New Zealand Board President’s XI] happened, VB got out for a duck [he actually made 92 in the first innings, but 3 in the second]. And from the ground itself he went straight up on the hill, and didn’t come down till the evening! So we called it the VB Hill. He went straight from the ground, with the pads on. Pads, gloves, helmet, he went up.”More said that as a selector, Chandrasekhar was clear-thinking and candid. “VB would always give his opinions. He knew his own mind and we respected that,” More said. “He definitely had his opinions, and he would share them too, but a very good cricketing brain. We used to get along really well together as selectors. We would argue in the selection meetings, but at the end of the day, we were all great friends.”He had his own style of talking. Always jovial, and he would drop these cricketing anecdotes from time to time. Sometimes I would find that he would just get lost in his own world. If something went wrong he wouldn’t like it and would just go into his own world, in his own zone. That’s why I used to tell him, ‘VB, you’ve not come down from that hill!'”

Barcelona president Laporta confirmed that De Jong is close to signing a new contract with the club. After months of slow progress, renewal talks were recently revived, and both parties appear to be in agreement.

The former Ajax midfielder's future at Barca has been the subject of ongoing speculation due to his high wages and interest from other clubs, with Manchester United often said to be after him. However, with Hansi Flick eager to keep him in his plans, and De Jong regaining his top form last season, the club now views him as a central figure moving forward.

WHAT LAPORTA AND KOEMAN SAID

Laporta made it clear, telling reporters: “We want Frenkie to be here for many years because he's a key player for our team. His renewal is on track and we'll have news soon."

Netherlands head coach Koeman, who was in attendance at the same event as the Barcelona chief, echoed that optimism, saying: “He wants to stay and has said several times that he's very happy here. I don't see any problems.”

The 28-year-old is currently enjoying a holiday and is expected to return for preseason on July 13. An official announcement regarding his contract renewal could come shortly after, with Barcelona aiming to finalise the deal before the 2025-26 campaign kicks off.

ICC makes between-overs stop clock a permanent feature in ODIs, T20Is

At the 2024 T20 World Cup, 10-overs-a-side needed to constitute a completed knockout game instead of the usual five

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Mar-2024The stop clock to help speed up over rates will become a permanent feature in men’s ODIs and T20Is between Full Members from June 1, the ICC announced after its board meetings in Dubai this week.According to the rule, which has been trialled in international cricket since December last year, the fielding side must be ready to start an over within a minute of the previous one ending. If they fail to do so, they will be allowed two warnings by the umpires, after which a five-run penalty will be imposed for the third offence and every subsequent one.”The results of the stop-clock trial were presented to the Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC), which demonstrated that around 20 minutes per ODI match had been saved in time,” an ICC said in a statement laying out the reasons for making the rule permanent. During the trial period, no team was found to have exceeded the one-minute limit between overs three times in an innings, and so the five-run penalty has not yet been imposed for this offence. In addition to the stop clock, there are two other penalties that can be imposed to police over-rates in limited-overs cricket – a fielding penalty and monetary fines. The fielding penalty is laid out as follows: if the fielding side fails to begin the final over of the innings by the stipulated cut-off time, after accounting for delays, they will have to bring an extra fielder into the 30-yard circle for however many overs are remaining in the innings. So they will be allowed only four fielders outside the circle, instead of five, for the duration of the penalty. This rule, introduced in early 2022, applies to both men’s and women’s limited-overs games. The monetary fine includes a 5% cut in the team’s match fee for every over they are short of the minimum required over rate, after the umpires have taken into account allowances for unavoidable delays. The fine for the captain is double that of his team-mates, and the fines are capped at 50% of the match fee.2024 T20 World Cup: 10 overs minimum for knockout gamesThe 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June will have reserve days in place for the semi-finals and final, in case of delays and interruptions. And each of those knockout games will require a minimum of 10 overs per innings to constitute a completed game. For the group stages, the minimum requirement remains five-overs-per-side to constitute a match, as is the norm for T20 cricket.2026 T20 World Cup qualification at stake in 2024 editionThe 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, like the upcoming edition, will comprise 20 teams, with 12 automatic qualifiers: the two hosts India and Sri Lanka as well as the other teams that make the Super Eights at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Then, two to four teams (it will be fewer than four if India or Sri Lanka finish outside the top eight in 2024) are decided by who are the next highest-ranked teams in the ICC’s T20I rankings on June 30, 2024. The remaining eight spots for 2026 will be decided through the usual regional qualifiers pathway.

Is Lamine Yamal being wasted on the wing? Wonderkid told how to reach 'the next step' as Netherlands legend picks Barcelona and Spain hero's best position

Yamal was among the best players in the world last season, operating from the right wing. But legendary former Netherlands striker Van Basten argued that the teenager should be fielded in another position in order to allow him to influence the game to his maximum potential.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Spanish international has enjoyed a dream 12 months, lifting the European Championship with Spain and then helping Barcelona win a domestic treble — La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de Espana. Yamal scored 21 goals and produced a whopping 25 assists for club and country combined in 62 games, making him one of the favourites to lift the Ballon d'Or later this year.

  • WHAT MARCO VAN BASTEN SAID

Speaking on , Van Basten said: "Best man on the field. It's actually a shame that he plays right wing. Because he doesn't get the ball enough. If he plays more centrally, he has much more influence on the game.

"Of course he is a constant threat on the right. But I think that if he plays in the axis of the field, he can mean even more to the team. And I think that is the next step. He can score goals, give crosses, put people in front of the goal. We know that by now. The next step should be: what is his influence on the team in the end? Such a good player should play much more in the centre of the field. Which means he has much more of the ball. And is much more important for Barcelona."

    WHAT NEXT FOR LAMINE YAMAL?

After losing the Nations League final against Portugal with Spain, the youngster has headed off for a vacation. Next month, he will return to the Barcelona squad for pre-season duties.

Dean Elgar anchors Essex as Hampshire's challenge fades

Ben Allison claims three wickets as Pepper, Cox aid 167-run chase

ECB Reporters Network20-Jun-2024Essex 170 for 2 (Elgar 60*, Pepper 44, Cox 41*) beat Hampshire 166 for 7 (Weatherley 48, Fuller 39*, Allison 3-39) by eight wickets Dean Elgar showed off all his variations with his third fifty of the Vitality Blast to give Essex a comfortable fourth victory of the competition.South African Elgar never looked fussed in chasing 167, as his 60 not out made in conjunction with the swashbuckling of Adam Rossington’s quick-fire 18, Michael Pepper’s swaggering 44 off 24 and Jordan Cox’s slow-burning unbeaten 41.Hampshire had been dragged a middling score by a late James Fuller flurry of 39 off 16, after Joe Weatherley had stoically struck 48, but as was the case in last year’s rain-affected semi-final, it wasn’t enough. After losing James Vince and Ben McDermott within three balls of each other in identical swings to deep square, the Hawks seemed to tempo their innings towards a 160 total having been stuck in.Weatherley and T20 debutant Fletcha Middleton ticked the runs along but never appeared in too much rush during a 47-run alliance. One reason for Hampshire’s tardiness either side of the powerplay was the dead-eye accurate spell from Simon Harmer – who on his 100th T20 appearance for Essex didn’t concede a boundary in his four overs. The regular wicket-taking came from others though, with Paul Walter strangling Middleton down the legside to end that partnership, and Matt Critchley stopping Toby Albert and Benny Howell from getting going.Weatherley only scored four boundaries in his 48 but never looked bogged down. He was only denied a half-century when a straight drive smashed the non-striker’s stumps and he was lbw to Ben Allison next ball – Allison ended up with three for 44.At 117 for six with 20 balls to go, it looked like Hampshire had undercooked their scoring – but Fuller entered to blast some crucial death over runs.He played the biggest hand in the final three overs going for 14, 13 and 17 runs – with five six included and the total now looking closer to par.Hampshire had an all-pace attack – with Liam Dawson ill and missing a Hawks T20 after 43 straight appearances – and learned the lesson of the faster you bowl, the further it goes.Adam Rossington started to prove that theory by pumping Michael Neser for six, six, four before the Australian took the pace off and found Rossington chipping to mid-off.Elgar had already swatted Chris Wood straight back over his head for six and took the quick run-scoring lead with his elegant risk-free hitting. His fifty off 34 balls relied more on the meaty middle of his bat than extravagant or inventive shots, with Pepper more than matching his rate.Pepper strode past 250 runs in this season’s Blast – surviving a drop on three – before his 80-run stand, off 47 balls, with Elgar was ended when he swished to long on.Cox showed no interest in the six-hitting of his predecessors to make sure no collapse was forthcoming to put on an unbroken 59 with the ever-nonplussed Elgar. He did open up with the winning post in sight with a couple of sixes off John Turner, as victory was secured with 20 balls to spare – with Cox classically driving to the boundary for an eight-wicket win.

Richard Gould: 'Strong consensus' about private investment in Hundred teams

Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, says there is a “strong consensus” within English cricket that the Hundred should be opened up to private investment and that the owners of American and British sports teams, as well as IPL franchises, have made their interest clear. The ECB has consulted with the first-class counties since the end of the Hundred’s third season in August, discussing the ownership model of the competition’s eight clubs which each comprise a men’s and women’s team. Several options have been tabled, with host counties likely to be given equity stakes in the teams that play at their home venue.Counties would then be free to sell those stakes on to interested investors, or retain them if they choose. The governing body would retain ownership of the competition as a whole, which is reportedly valued at over £1 billion, but could sell its own stake in the teams.Discussions will continue but Gould’s comments were the clearest indication yet that private investment is imminent. “The future of the Hundred is very strong in terms of ticket sales, broadcast interest, and franchise interest now in terms of third-party investors who are interested in it,” he said at an event launching the 2024 season at The Oval.”We’re having really good discussions with the game. There is a strong consensus that we would like to see private investment come into the Hundred. There’s a very strong consensus that that should be through investment into the teams rather than the central competition, and now we’re working through the options of what that could potentially look like, in terms of how control, revenue and capital is shared.”Gould does not expect English cricket to follow South Africa’s lead in selling all eight Hundred teams to IPL team owners. “Our interest won’t just be with IPL franchises,” he said. “We have got a lot of interested sports owners from the [United] States and from this country. So we’ll be looking at all those options.”The ECB would keep overall control of the Hundred, which has been valued at £1 billion,•Getty Images for ECB

The ECB initially told counties it intended to confirm changes by the end of May and implement them in time for the 2025 season, but has since cooled on that timeframe. “We’re not putting huge deadlines on it,” Gould said, with the consensus over the broad principles around the Hundred’s future not yet reflected in the detail.”The game has suffered from divisions over the last five or six years, and we would rather take a bit of time in order to get to the conclusions that we think the game is seeking, rather than rush people,” Gould said. “We can, frankly, create more value with a game that is operating as one.”The ECB are still resigned to the fact that the BCCI will not grant active men’s players No-Objection Certificates to feature in overseas short-form leagues. “It’s not something that we are working into our proceedings,” Gould said. “I can see why: they [the BCCI] have got a dominant global position there, and they want to try and make sure that they can retain that.”Indian broadcast money generally follows Indian players… the BCCI and the IPL have just said, ‘No, we want the IPL to be the No. 1 global tournament and in order to do that, we need to make sure that we rely on our strengths which is the size of our market and the quality of our players’. That may change at some point… but we are not basing any of our models on that, at this point.”Related

Some smaller counties have raised concerns that proposed ownership models may further entrench the chasm between them and the biggest clubs, but Gould denounced the idea that the ECB’s management are hoping to kill some counties off by stealth as “a totally mad conspiracy” theory.”I’ve been in the game 20-odd years and that conversation has always been around, but we’re the one professional sport that hasn’t lost a club [in England] and we’ve been going 140-odd years. Look at rugby and football. We’ve done extremely well as a sport to maintain that 100% record, and that’s where our intent lies.”The depth of our talent pool, both in terms of men and women, is our superpower at the moment… having more teams and more players and more depth to our talent pool is ideal. It’s where we want to be. It increases competition. It provides more opportunity for talent to come through. I don’t see any backward step in terms of 18 first-class counties.””But we also need to make sure that clubs do not feel restricted by that, so that we can make sure that [counties] that are particularly good at delivering talent or crowds through the doors… we need to make sure that they’re celebrated too. We can’t run it all at a median denominator. We have to let clubs and counties fly.”

Lost the ball 19x: Arsenal must axe 3/10 dud who was worse than Odegaard

da apostaganha: And just like that, Arsenal’s season has come to a bitterly disappointing end.

da pixbet: Mikel Arteta’s side started like a house on fire against Paris Saint-Germain last night, but two goals from Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi were enough to dash their hopes of only a second Champions League final in the club’s history.

Bukayo Saka managed to pull one back late on, but it all proved too much for the visitors, and once again, they came up short when it really mattered and looked utterly bereft of ideas for much of the game.

While it wasn’t a terrible performance from the North Londoners, a few players let themselves down, like Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard and another who has to be axed this summer.

Arsenal's poorest performers vs PSG

Like the team overall, Odegaard and Martinelli started the game relatively well last night, with the former forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into an incredible save down low to his left and the latter getting past his markers several times.

However, as the game progressed, both starters began to fade into the background, with The Athletic’s Aaron Catterson-Reid claiming the captain put in a “completely anonymous display in the second half,” and the same could be said about the latter.

It might sound overly harsh, but we aren’t alone in this opinion, as Alex Turk of the Express was particularly scathing of the pair.

He awarded the Norwegian a 4/10 and the Brazilian a 3/10, writing that the former ‘goes missing in these crunch games far too often’ and the latter was both ‘invisible’ and ‘not near the level required.’

It’s a damming assessment of their performances, more than justified by some of their statistics, as, across his 95 minutes of action, the captain amassed a combined expected goal and assists figure of just 0.22, while the former Ituano gem failed in 100% of his crosses and lost 50% of his ground duels.

However, while neither player looked anywhere near their best last night, there is still some clear upside in keeping them for next season, which cannot be said about another of the Gunners’ biggest disappointments from Pairs.

The Arsenal star who has to be axed

While William Saliba and even Mikel Merino looked off the pace last night, neither of them should be moved on in the summer, which cannot be said for Thomas Partey.

The former Atlético Madrid star was absent for the first leg of the tie due to a stupid incident off the ball against Real Madrid, but it would be hard to say he added much of anything to the team in the second leg, bar some rather underwhelming long throws.

For example, while he kept the ball moving fairly well in the first half, he slowly became more and more of a problem in possession, losing the ball at an increasing rate, including for Hakimi’s tie-ending goal late in the second half.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Again, while it sounds harsh, we aren’t alone in being disappointed with Turk awarding him a paltry 3/10 match rating at full-time, while Catterson-Reid simply described his showing as “so so bad.”

Unsurprisingly, the 31-year-old’s statistics more than back up the scathing reviews of his display, as, in 95 minutes of action, he made just 31 passes, misplaced two of three crosses and 50% of his long balls, failed to have a single shot, lost 100% of his aerial duels, lost the ball a staggering 19 times and was dribbled past once.

It was the sort of showing that makes talk of him being offered a new contract seem utterly ridiculous, as with him turning 32 in the summer, there is no reason to believe he’ll improve, let alone maintain his form into next season.

Ultimately, while the team clearly put in the effort at points last night, there were a few too many players who weren’t at the level, including Partey, who should be thanked for his service in the summer and sent on his way.

Arsenal move with "formal" offer to £50m player as Real Madrid stall

The Gunners have get in there first.

ByEmilio Galantini May 9, 2025

Arsenal lost out on this year’s Premier League title to Liverpool by a seismic distance, thanks largely to key-player injuries and an inability to put teams away, with Mikel Arteta’s side registering 13 draws in the top flight so far, which is more than any other side in the top nine.

The Gunners did knock Real Madrid out of the Champions League in statement fashion, dismantling Carlo Ancelotti’s side 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, but competition favourites PSG put an end to their European dream in the next round.

It is now back to the drawing board for Arteta and Berta in preparation for 25/26, with a transfer overhaul anticipated at the Emirates this summer.

Arsenal could spend up to £300 million on seven major signings across the squad (GiveMeSport). It is also believed they’re targeting a new second-choice goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, right-winger, left-winger and striker among their recruitment priorities (GiveMeSport).

Arteta’s left side of attack will be a key area to watch, as reports suggest Gabriel Martinelli could be sold by Arsenal in the event of a suitable offer arriving (The Athletic).

Arsenal's GabrielMartinellicelebrates scoring their second goal

Leandro Trossard’s deal also expires in 2026, and with no sign of a renewal so far, Arsenal will be planning for life without the Belgium international if they decide not to extend his stay.

Berta adds Milan star Rafael Leao to Arsenal target list

According to Calciomercato and Italian transfer journalist Daniele Longo, Portugal international Rafael Leao is now emerging as a possible Arsenal solution.

The 25-year-old has been a star player for the Rossoneri over the last few seasons, chalking up 12 goals and 13 assists in all competitions this term, with his form turning heads at N5.

AC Milan's RafaelLeaocelebrates scoring their first goal

It is claimed that new director Berta has personally added Leao to Arsenal’s transfer target list ahead of the summer window, but he could be a pretty expensive option.

His contract contains a €175m (£148m) release clause, which will be active from July 5 to July 15 (Foot Mercato). However, it is unlikely Arsenal would be willing to pay this, and may well look to whittle this down to a far more acceptable and doable fee.

Longo reports that the lowest offer Milan would entertain is around €100m (£85m), which still comes as a pretty significant outlay and would make Leao one of Arsenal’s most expensive ever signings.

A potential deal for the Sporting academy graduate is therefore set to be an ambitious one, and with Chelsea also in contention for Leao, Arsenal face a serious battle on their hands if they wish to tempt him to north London.

Big upgrade on Foden: Man City want to sign "world-class" £108m star

Manchester City can still finish the 2024/25 season holding the FA Cup aloft, but it’s safe to say this campaign has been an eye-opener for Pep Guardiola and Co.

Indeed, the reigning Premier League champions find themselves all the way down in an unsatisfactory fifth in the league standings, with a mammoth 22-point gap opening up between the lacklustre Citizens and Arne Slot’s seriously impressive Liverpool at the top of the tree.

Therefore, it isn’t out of the question this summer that Guardiola will rip up what was once successful at the Etihad in order to bring in some exciting new blood, with Phil Foden in danger of dropping out of the Spaniard’s first-team plans if he doesn’t improve.

The numbers behind Foden's poor form at Man City

Out with the old and in with the new could well be the mantra at City this summer with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne perhaps moving on after such a disorienting season is over and done with.

Foden is unlikely to up and leave like his Belgian teammate, but the 24-year-old is still a shadow of the skilful talent he was just last campaign when he was crowned PFA Player of the Year as Guardiola’s men romped home to yet another top-flight triumph.

Critiqued on the international stage by Roy Keane for some uninspiring showings donning England white, Foden has failed to pick up a goal or assist in Premier League action since Chelsea away in January, leading to the agile midfielder having to make do with spots on the substitute bench as of late.

While he’s not impressed on the international stage, he also needs to do more at club level. Last term the attacking midfielder found the net 27 times but in 2024/25, he’s only scored ten times.

Thus, his minutes could deplete further at City, particularly if they complete a mega-money transfer in the summer.

Man City City "want to sign" big Foden upgrade

A few tweaks here and there to the first team personnel could inspire City to get back to their best down the line, especially if they are able to sign their number one target this summer.

As per a report by Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the bruised outfit “want to sign” Bayer Leverkusen superstar Florian Wirtz when the window reopens.

The Bundesliga side are preparing to offer Wirtz a new deal that would keep him at the club until 2028 but it will include a release clause allowing club’s to him out of that deal in a year’s time.

It should be seen as a priority on City’s end to try and snap up the services of the explosive German, with sumputous strikes such as the one below helping Leverkusen lift the Bundesliga title proudly last season.

He could well steer his new employers back to the very summit of the Premier League, therefore, but it will come at a significant cost, with Plettenberg further revealing that Xabi Alonso’s men would only consider parting ways with their electric ace if an offer around the £108m mark was made.

Away from his side being crowned champions last term, Wirtz has also torn open top-flight defences in 2024/25, with the German up to a ridiculous 27 goals and assists in all competitions next to Foden’s inferior 15.

His continued ridiculous performances for Leverkusen has even seen him branded as “world class” by 1. FC Köln boss Gerhard Struber, with Wirtz’s swagger and skill on the ball making him a perfect replacement for a declining Foden, considering he can operate either as a number ten or as a winger, much like this counterpart.

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz

City do find themselves at a crossroads at this moment in time with some uncomfortable decisions having to be made soon over first-team stalwarts, leading to Foden being ditched potentially for Wirtz to shine.
