Why Friedkin Group’s massive Everton transfer plan was foiled by PSR

The January transfer window may be over for another season, but an intriguing new report has outlined the efforts Everton made on deadline day and how they were foiled in their attempts.

Everton shining under Moyes

The Blues are in far more positive spirits than they were with Sean Dyche in charge, with David Moyes making an immediate impact since returning for his second spell as manager at Goodison Park.

Everton are now nine points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, and have a game in hand on 18th-place Leicester City, so it looks as though they will once again beat the drop. A home FA Cup tie with Bournemouth awaits on Saturday afternoon, before a massive Merseyside derby showdown with Liverpool next Wednesday evening.

Everton star Iliman Ndiaye

In the January window, the Blues completed the signing of Flamengo midfielder Carlos Alcaraz, bringing him on a temporary basis until the end of the season. They have the option of signing him permanently in the summer, too, should he catch the eye in the coming months.

There were players who Everton reportedly failed to snap up on deadline day earlier this week, however, with West Brom midfielder Tom Fellows reportedly an example of that. Instead, he stayed put with the Baggies, but interest could return for him at the end of the current campaign.

Everton's deadline day could have been so much busier

According to a fresh claim from Football Insider, Everton “had four players lined up and ready to sign on transfer deadline day”, with The Friedkin Group going big.

Their attempts to bring in new signings were “heavily restricted by profit and sustainability constraints which limited the deals they were able to do” though, putting paid to the Blues bringing in a host of new faces.

Everton manager David Moyes before Brighton match

While Everton only ultimately signed Alcaraz at the end of the window, it is encouraging to see the club’s owners seemingly backing Moyes in the transfer market. Adhering to financial rules is clearly a must, in order to avoid the same punishment the Blues have received in the past, but this suggests that the funds are there for the Merseysiders to add significantly to the squad moving forward.

Moyes himself has discussed the financial situation: “I think we’ve still got a little bit of work to do with the financial situation, but in the main, I think once we get to the summer, we should be in a good place. Getting to the summer is the bit we need to do now.”

This feels like a key moment in Everton’s history, with the club going through such a torrid time in recent years, whether that be because of several relegation battles, issues with Farhad Moshiri, finances or disappointing managers.

With Moyes bringing stability back to the club, however, and a move to a new stadium happening in the summer, there is a reason for supporters to be feeling far more optimistic. A number of new signings will only add to that positivity.

Buttler on Lancashire Blast hopes: 'I expect us to push hard for that trophy'

England captain enjoying extended Lightning stint despite scratchy recent form

ECB Reporters Network05-Jun-2023From the bright lights of the IPL to the ‘Kiss Me Quick’ hats of Blackpool, Jos Buttler is set for quite the scenery change on Wednesday when he plays his first home match of the summer for Lancashire in the Vitality Blast against Worcestershire at Stanley Park.England men’s limited-overs captain Buttler is in the early stages of a 10-group game run in Lightning colours. His first was Thursday’s Roses defeat at Headingley, and he will feature in five home games between now and July 2 – the other four at Emirates Old Trafford.Buttler, fresh from two months at the IPL with Rajasthan Royals, has been with Lancashire for the past week and a half, training at Chester Boughton Hall before away matches at Yorkshire, Durham and Notts.”It’s been so nice to go and train at Chester after being in the IPL with all the razzmatazz and pressure, to almost go back to where you started your career,” he said. “Club cricket has been such a big part of my development, it makes you feel quite comfortable and for it to just be about the cricket.Related

Get Carter! Spinner bounces back to extend Lancashire's losing run

“Being able to take some of our games to outgrounds such as Blackpool, it’s great for the county. It will be a bit different [than the last couple of months at the IPL]. But if it was the same every time, you’d get bored of it maybe. I’m really looking forward it.”After Thursday’s Roses game, in which Buttler scored 1 opening the batting, Yorkshire captain Shan Masood said Lancashire’s team for the Blast “could be an international side”. Buttler is joined in the squad by Colin de Grandhomme, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Daryl Mitchell, Matthew Parkinson, Phil Salt and Luke Wood.It begs the question of how the Red Rose compare to an IPL team?”It’s a tough question,” Buttler said. “There are limitations in terms of county cricket compared to IPL. You get the four overseas players over there, for example. But I certainly think we have a very strong team for this competition.”There’s lots of international experience and some really talented guys who are on the cusp of pushing. We also have some experienced guys from around the franchise world. We have a nice blend of guys, and we should go well in the competition.”It is amazing to think that this coming September it will be 10 years since Buttler signed for Lancashire from home county Somerset in search of greater opportunities. At the time, Craig Kieswetter was preferred behind the stumps at Taunton.”That makes me feel a bit old,” smiled the 32-year-old. “It is a long time, but it feels like it’s gone very fast. You look back at 10 years and my evolution as a player, the constant desire to improve and get better.”There have obviously been different parts of that, trying to make the best of it in red-ball cricket and Test matches. Very much now, I’d say there’s a big focus on white-ball cricket and being captain of the [England] white-ball team.”It’s been a great journey and a development of my game over time. There’s still some very similar bits in there, but hopefully there’s plenty more to come. I came here with ambitions to really push on and kick-start an international career. It’s been a fantastic journey, and the club have been so supportive.”I’ve been in and out and not been around as much, but the support has been fantastic. I’ve had a brilliant time at the club, and I’m really looking forward to playing a nice block of games and be part of a really strong side. Hopefully we can have a good competition.”Given the strength of Lancashire’s team across the two decades of Blast cricket, it is a huge surprise that the county have only won the title once – in 2015, when Buttler was in the team. The likes of Andrew Flintoff have played, Muttiah Muralitharan, the late Andrew Symonds, Stuart Law – the list goes on.Buttler is one of those who can’t really believe that statistic: “No, not really – for the strength of the squads and teams we’ve had and the stature of the club,” he added. “Teams such as Lancashire should be competing and winning. Overall, we’ve won the most T20 games [in England]. But it’s about winning the finals.”We’ve got a good team again this year, and – as I say – I expect us to push hard for that trophy.”

Labuschagne replaces Agar in Australia's World Cup squad

Australia will carry an injured Travis Head through the first part of the World Cup but have provided themselves with extra batting cover by including Marnus Labuschagne at the expense of Ashton Agar who has been ruled out with a calf injury.Head, who suffered a fractured hand against South Africa, has been included in the final 15-player squad but will be unavailable for first half of the tournament. However, given he did not require surgery, there is confidence he will be fit to play later in the round-robin stage and he is viewed as so valuable to Australia’s chances that they are willing to initially go in with 14 available players.Related

Marsh and Maxwell star in Australia's consolation win

Maxwell a crucial piece to Australia's World Cup jigsaw puzzle

Since returning to the ODI side in March 2022, Head has made 791 runs at 60.84 and a strike rate of 119.84. While he recovers, Mitchell Marsh will likely continue to open with David Warner.Agar’s injury, which was confirmed by scans when he returned home from South Africa for the birth of his child, created a vacancy in the squad and the selectors have opted to change tactics and include Labuschagne rather than pick another frontline spinner.Glenn Maxwell’s four-wicket haul in Rajkot was timely in that regard, suggesting that he can be a second spinner alongside Adam Zampa, but it remains a gamble by the selectors given the uncertainty over how Maxwell will cope with the workload as he continues to feel the effects of the broken leg he suffered last year.It also means there is no specialist spin cover for Zampa. Fellow legspinner Tanveer Sangha will remain with the squad until at least the end of the warm-up matches along with allrounder Matt Short.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“There has been one change to the original preliminary squad of 15 announced a month ago with Marnus replacing Ashton,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “This was a tough call but unfortunately, we couldn’t carry both Travis and Ashton into the tournament with the injuries they have.”We have made the decision to carry Travis through the early stages with the aim of him being available around the mid part of the tournament. He has been a really important player in this ODI team and we are hopeful his return can provide a positive impetus as it gets to the business end of the tournament.”It has been a rapid revival of Labuschagne’s one-day fortunes after he was initially not meant to play a part in either the South Africa or India series this month. He was recalled as a replacement for Steven Smith as the latter recovered from a wrist injury, and in the opening match against South Africa in Bloemfontein was parachuted in as Cameron Green’s concussion sub where he made a match-winning 80 not out.He went on to make 421 runs at 60.14 in eight matches, including a century, also in Bloemfontein, and 72 off 58 balls in Rajkot on Wednesday.Agar initially suffered a calf strain in pre-season and was ruled out of the T20I series in South Africa. He recovered to play the opening match of the one-day series but pulled up sore after that outing and did not feature again. He would likely have played a part at various stages during the World Cup, teaming up with Zampa when conditions warranted two frontline spinners. There was also his batting ability, which he showed when helping guide Australia to victory in Bloemfontein.Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green are both short of runs heading into the World Cup while Alex Carey’s 99 is his only significant score in the lead-in.Australia have warm-up matches against Netherlands on September 30 and Pakistan on October 3 before opening their World Cup campaign against India, in Chennai, on October 8.

Forget Marmoush: Man City hit gold over star who’s now worth 218% more

da jogodeouro: What a performance it was from new Manchester City signing Omar Marmoush against Newcastle United. The Premier League champions thrashed Eddie Howe’s side 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium, with the Egyptian attacker getting a scintillating hattrick.

da bet vitoria: Marmoush scored his first goal in the 19th minute, and by the 33rd, he had three goals.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt man starred, helping his new club to an important win against a top-four rival. Simon Bajkowski, chief Manchester City writer for The Manchester Evening News, was certainly complimentary of Marmoush. He gave him a 9/10 rating and described his performance as ‘explosive’.

However, it was not just the new City number seven who was a standout player. There were plenty of impressive performances against Newcastle.

City’s standout players vs. Newcastle

Another of the best City players against the Magpies was someone who Pep Guardiola described as a “mini Rodri”, new signing Nico Gonzalez. The former FC Porto man looked right at home in their midfield.

The stats from the game, courtesy of Sofascore, show just how well the midfielder performed. He had 114 touches and completed 97% of his passes, with the influence from his time in Barcelona’s La Masia academy shining through. He also won four out of four ground duels.

Attacking midfielder James McAtee also impressed for the Citizens against Newcastle. Despite minimal opportunities in 2024/25, he has, on the whole, made it count. McAtee has scored six times this season, which includes two Premier League goals in his last three appearances.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

It was an excellent performance against the Magpies from two of City’s new January signings and an academy player. One of their summer signings, Savinho, was a standout out, too. He has been superb since moving to the Etihad Stadium.

Savinho’s current market value

The Brazil international was on fire against Howe’s side. He registered an assist, creating the third goal for Marmoush, as well as completing three dribbles and winning six ground duels. It was a fantastic performance to build on his exploits this season.

Savinho has certainly impressed Guardiola during his time at City so far. After their most recent outing at the Etihad Stadium, he explained that he “wasn’t expecting this super impact” from the Brazilian to start his career in England.

The 20-year-old has managed two goals and nine assists in 33 appearances this season across all competitions. Of those, one goal and seven assists have come in the Premier League. It has been a superb start to life in the English top flight.

The City winger has got some impressive stats on Sofascore, too. In just 15 starts in the Premier League, Savinho has created ten big chances and averages 1.6 key passes per game. He is a creative machine.

Signing the “electric” winger, as football analyst Ben Mattinson described him, has been a superb investment so far from the Citizens. They brought him into the club in the summer from French side Troyes, a sister club of City, for a fee of £30.8m.

It might be unsurprising to hear that, since his move, the Brazilian’s value has shot up. He is now deemed to be worth around £98m by CIES Football Observatory. That is an incredible rise of 218% from what they paid for him just months ago.

Savinho

It does not seem like the 20-year-old will slow down any time soon, either. He has hit the ground running in the Premier League, and surely will only get better.

It seems unlikely City will sell him, at least for a while, but Savinho has been worth every penny so far, and will surely only increase in value.

The next Cole Palmer: Chelsea must rue parting ways with "outrageous" star

Chelsea have endured somewhat of a drop-off in recent weeks under Enzo Maresca, failing to live up to the early standards he set for himself in the early stages of his time at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian only lost two of his first 10 Premier League matches at the helm, looking as though they could be in an unexpected title battle at one stage.

However, their form has taken a turn for the worse over the last few weeks, losing four of the last eight matches, seeing them slip to sixth place and sitting behind Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth.

Injuries have undoubtedly contributed to the recent decline, with seven first-team members currently sitting on the sidelines and unable to aid the manager in his attempts to secure Champions League football.

Maresca has still been able to rely on one player who’s been the shining light in West London since his big money to the club a couple of years ago.

Cole Palmer’s stats for Chelsea in 2024/25

After his £40m move from Manchester City in the summer of 2023, Cole Palmer had an immediate impact for the Blues, registering 25 goals and 15 assists in his debut year in West London.

Such a record has made the Englishman’s task of matching such a tally this time around that little bit harder, but he’s already produced numerous moments of magic that have taken the division by storm once again.

The 22-year-old has already scored 14 times during the ongoing campaign, whilst also registering six assists for his teammates – with his combined tally the highest in the first-team squad.

His best performance undoubtedly came in the 4-2 thrashing of Brighton and Hove Albion, with Palmer scoring all four in the first half, becoming the first player in the division’s history to achieve such a feat.

Despite his excellent form under Maresca, the club may have allowed the next version of the superstar to slip through their net – making a mistake in allowing him to depart the club.

The player who could’ve been Chelsea’s next Palmer

Living up to the high standards set by Palmer is no easy feat, something which no player currently at the Bridge has managed this season given his tally of contributions.

However, the thought of having another version of the England international is a scary prospect, but one that unfortunately won’t come to reality after letting Tyler Dibling slip through their net.

The 18-year-old, who is currently starring for Southampton in the Premier League, was brought for £1.5m by the Blues back in the summer of 2022 – but it would be a move that was short-lived.

After making just two appearances for the academy, he would return to the Saints after failing to settle, with the Blues potentially living to regret their decision not to make the teenager more at home when they had the opportunity.

He’s since developed into a key member of their first team in 2024/25, making 21 appearances in the league and scoring twice – leading to journalist Eduardo Hagn labelling the talent as “outrageous”.

Dibling possesses very similar traits to Palmer, with the pair both left-footed and operating off the right-hand side and cutting onto their stronger foot after gliding past the opposition.

As seen by their figures from 2024/25, the Saints star has matched or bettered Palmer in numerous key areas, highlighting the quality he brings, possessing the ability to become even better given his tender age.

Whilst there was not much the club could’ve done to stand in his way at such a young age, his development away from the Bridge appears to have rubbed salt into the wounds – demonstrating what they could’ve had.

Unfortunately for the fans and Maresca, Dibling will always remain a case of what could’ve been, with the hierarchy now having to pay a fee in the region of £55m if they were to bring him back to West London in the coming months.

Jayant Yadav will be playing for Middlesex in the County Championship run-in•PTI

Jayant Yadav, the India offspinner, has joined Middlesex on a short-term deal for the last four LV= Insurance County Championship matches of the season.Yadav, 33, has taken 16 wickets at 29.06 in six Test matches for his country, the most recent of which came against Sri Lanka in March 2022. His best figures, 4 for 49, were against New Zealand in December 2021, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However, his stand-out performance in Test cricket arguably came on England’s Test tour of 2016-17, where he made his highest score of 104, batting at No.9 in the fourth Test at Delhi and adding 241 with the then-captain, Virat Kohli, in an innings victory.”I am honoured and excited to join the prestigious Middlesex County Cricket Club for the upcoming Championship games and be a part of its rich cricketing history,” Yadav said in a club statement.”I enjoyed my experience of playing county cricket last year,” he added, having played two matches for Warwickshire in their Championship run-in in 2022, “and am eagerly looking forward to the new stint with Middlesex and contributing to the club’s success.”Yadav’s first outing is set to be against Championship challengers Essex at Chelmsford next week, prior to contests against Lancashire, Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire. In his first-class career to date he has taken 205 wickets, with best bowling figures of 7 for 58 for Haryana in the Ranji Trophy in 2019-20.Middlesex’s Director of Cricket, Alan Coleman, said: “With Pieter Malan returning home to South Africa, we wanted to bolster the squad with another quality signing ahead of four crucial matches that lay ahead of us in September.”We feel that spin will be an important factor in September and the opportunity to sign an international spinner of Jayant’s quality was too good an opportunity to turn down.”He brings us that extra bit of something you get from an international cricketer, experience, quality, know how – all attributes that will prove hugely valuable to us in the coming games.”We can’t wait to have him with us and wish him every success here over the coming month.”

Man Utd target Matheus Cunha urged to snub Old Trafford transfer & hold out for a 'better team' amid Wolves heroics

Cunha may have 'reservations' about move to Old TraffordDon Goodman believes Cunha could wait for better offersBrazilian star man in tough seasonFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Wolves striker Goodman revealed he would be "shocked" if Cunha didn't receive offers from top clubs across Europe. A move to Old Trafford may not be the best option for him, Goodman told .

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Cunha has struck 15 goals in 30 Premier League appearances this season, a key part of Wolves' survival. While Vitor Pereira's side have been in outstanding form as of late, Cunha has excelled all campaign – the best goal-scoring season of his career so far. The Brazil international has been at the centre of transfer speculation for months, and is expected to move on in the summer amid links to Man Utd.

WHAT GOODMAN SAID

Goodman said: "I wonder whether Matheus Cunha should have reservations about signing for Manchester United. At this moment, if I were Cunha, I would be questioning whether it would be a good move right now joining United, who have a lot of ground to make up and rebuilding to do to get where he wants to be.

"I think he's a top player who could play for any team in the Premier League or in Europe. That's how good I think he is. He needs to sort his head out at times, which is a separate issue, but Manchester United would be very lucky to have him.

"From his perspective, and I'm not dismissing the history and tradition of Manchester United, I'd be shocked if Matheus Cunha didn't have options to join better teams. I know it was on a different level but when I left Sunderland, who are a huge club, to join Wolves, it was because Wolves were in a better position to get me to where I wanted to be at that time.

"I suppose Manchester United can still win the Europa League, which may change things, but Matheus Cunha will have to sit down and talk through all the offers he'll receive with his representatives when the season draws to a close."

With mid-table safety already secured, Wolves host Brighton on Saturday before encounters with Crystal Palace and Brentford to see out the campaign. Cunha will have a big decision on his hands as to where his future lies in the summer.

Leus du Plooy, Anuj Dal grind Worcestershire on record-breaking day

Captain Leus du Plooy struck his maiden double century as Derbyshire took control of a record-breaking day against Worcestershire in the LV=Insurance County Championship encounter at New Road.Du Plooy and Anuj Dal came together at 320-5 and put on an unbroken 258, the Peakites record stand for the sixth wicket against any opposition in first-class cricket.Derbyshire’s mammoth total of 578 for 5 declared was their highest against Worcestershire and earned them a first innings lead of 341.Dal also emulated his achievement of in the corresponding game last summer of scoring a century and taking five wickets in an innings.Du Plooy was unbeaten on 238 and his marathon knock spanned nine hours and contained two sixes and 25 fours.Dal ended on 141 not out from 193 deliveries with five sixes and 13 fours when the declaration came mid-way through the afternoon session.Worcestershire were left to reflect on a below-par bowing performance, with only Joe Leach emerging with much credit, and a slipshod fielding display.Derbyshire will have aspirations of chasing a first Championship victory in 10 games stretching back to when they recovered from 14 for 5 on the opening morning to defeat Worcestershire at New Road last summer.Their bowlers then made early inroads with Jake Libby and Azhar Ali falling cheaply as Worcestershire reached 70 for two before bad light ended play with 16 overs remaining.Derbyshire resumed on 374 for 5 and Dal survived a chance to Josh Baker at second slip off Leach before he had added to his overnight 20.Du Plooy went past his previous first-class best of 186 for South Western Districts versus Northern Cape at Kimberley in February 2022 when he cut Navdeep Saini for four. The 28-year-old is certainly in prime form after over-taking his Derbyshire best of 170 against Yorkshire at Chesterfield earlier this month. He went onto become the first Derbyshire player to score a double hundred at New Road and a late cut for four off Saini took Dal to three figures.Worcestershire were powerless to halt the onslaught before du Plooy called a halt to the Derbyshire first innings and then his bowlers went to work.Stand-in captain Libby went for a pull to the first delivery from Luis Reece and keeper Brooke Guest ran around to deep backward square to hold onto a skier.Azhar Ali survived 33 deliveries for just three runs before he tried to work Nick Potts to leg and was lbw. There was just time for debutant Rehaan Edavalath to get off the mark – after his first innings duck – before the light closed in with Gareth Roderick unbeaten on 38.

This World Test Championship final is Australia’s 20th Test match in the two-year cycle. Four of their players have appeared in all the games. Travis Head has been part of 18 of them. One of his absences was due to Covid in Sydney during the 2021-22 Ashes, but the other was when he was dropped.Head, unbeaten on 146 off 156 balls after the first day against India, has now scored 1354 runs in this WTC at an average of 58.86 and strike rate of 81.91, and he can eye a double-century on Thursday. However, earlier this year, he was not deemed worthy of a place in the first Test against India in Nagpur.Whichever way the argument is spun with statistics, it will go down as one of the stranger selection calls in recent times, even when Head’s previous struggles in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2022 are factored in, but he insisted there is no lingering resentment.Related

Head and Smith dominate India on day one

“It honestly doesn’t faze me,” he said at The Oval. “Very privileged to be where I am and do what I do. We’ve got a very strong squad of guys, selection isn’t always going to go your way, it hasn’t in the past, that’s out of my control. All I can do is be as consistent as I can be on the field, [and] off the field enjoy myself.”Yes, I’d love to play every Test but that won’t always be the case. That gives good perspective to moments like this. Hopefully I don’t get dropped too much in the future but it will definitely happen … it doesn’t give me extra fuel.”I know certain decisions haven’t gone my way in the past but I feel like I [have] got a fair bit to contribute to this team and [am] valued within the team. I’ve got the backing of the staff and the captain and the players so it’s nice.”Like Nagpur, The Oval is also a ground where Head has been on the rough end of a selection call when he was omitted from the final Test of the 2019 Ashes. This time his sixth Test century, and the fourth in this edition of the World Test Championship, three of which have come at decisive stages of an innings, powered Australia to 327 for 3 at the close. The unbroken stand with Steven Smith was worth 251 to suggest few gremlins in the surface. However, batting was far from easy for considerable portions of the day, with some deliveries jumping from a length and others scuttling low. Australia, too, would have bowled first had they won the toss, but it appears to have worked out perfectly for them if the unevenness develops further over the game.”If you get it in the right area there’s plenty there,” Head said. “As the game goes on, hopefully it gets a little quicker for us and we can find the right lengths, and I feel if you do that for long periods of time it can be a challenging wicket.”That good length at the top of the stumps was hard work. And as we [saw] when they went to that short-pitched plan it wasn’t the most consistent wicket, and the Dukes swings a little so it made for some awkward moments.”
