"One to watch" – Tottenham could now sign attacker who Thomas Frank called "top-class"

da dobrowin: Tottenham Hotspur have made a promising start to the campaign under Thomas Frank and could now be about to pursue a very familiar face to fans of the Premier League.

Tottenham look to build on solid start to Premier League campaign

da aposte e ganhe: The international break is always a frustrating time for supporters itching for their club to return. However, the Lilywhites will be positively reflecting on a fine start that has seen them climb to third in the top-flight standings.

Tactical tweaks and a renewed threat from set pieces have made Tottenham a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League, albeit they will need to be switched on to handle the challenge of facing Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Everton and Chelsea in the coming weeks.

While Tottenham have been at the centre of takeover interest from tech entrepreneur Brooklyn Earick, among other parties, it doesn’t appear they are for sale, and a £100 million cash injection from the Lewis family will offer greater financial flexibility moving forward.

Whether this investment could be put towards the January window remains to be seen. Reports suggest Spurs are preparing a £26 million bid for Vasco da Gama star Rayan, indicating they are scouring the world for talent to enhance their bid for Champions League qualification.

Chelsea, Barcelona and Aston Villa are among his lengthy list of admirers, though Tottenham’s project is as enticing as ever for potential new recruits.

Nevertheless, there is a long way to go, and help may be required to ensure the North Londoners are in pole position to capitalise, hence their interest in a favourite of the Danish coach.

Tottenham want to sign Kevin Schade

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Tottenham are monitoring Brentford attacker Kevin Schade and could look to make a play for his arrival, albeit the transfer may be more likely to occur in the summer of 2026.

Plettenberg says he is “one to watch” this season, with the winger’s contract expiring in under three years.

The Germany international has scored once in eight appearances this term, contributing to his overall total of 15 goals and five assists in 82 outings for the Bees

.

Labelled “top class” by Frank, he brought Schade to the Gtech Community Stadium from Freiburg in 2023 and his faith has been repaid, with the 23-year-old establishing himself as a force predominantly on the left flank.

This term, the Potsdam-born man has created five chances and completed three successful crosses in the Premier League, per Fotmob, shining in a Brentford side that have struggled for momentum under Keith Andrews.

Either way, he could now be set for a move across the capital, though Tottenham will need to fend off competition from the likes of Borussia Dortmund for his signature.

Worth more than Isak: Aston Villa have hit the jackpot on "unstoppable" gem

Aston Villa have not had the best of starts to the 2025/26 campaign, having picked up just one point from their opening three Premier League fixtures, yet to break their duck.

There was an acceptance from Unai Emery and the powers that be that the summer transfer window would weigh heavily on the club after missing out on Champions League football following a contentious final-day defeat at Manchester United.

However, a late flurry of activity indicates progress and promise. Jadon Sancho and Harvey Elliot completed deadline-day loan moves; Victor Lindelof joined on a free transfer after his deal with Man United expired.

The late moves salvaged Villa’s frustrating summer, especially since Monchi and Damian Vidagany have retained the services of the most talented first-teamers.

Aston Villa have kept their best players

In August, Aston Villa sold Jacob Ramsey to Premier League rivals Newcastle United for a £43m fee. A poignant one, for sure. However, the sale of the homegrown talent has turned pure profit for the club, and perhaps played a role in securing a series of late-window additions.

Loan deals for Marcus Rashford, Axel Disasi and Marco Asensio came and passed, but the likes of Ollie Watkins and John McGinn remain at Villa Park after offers from divisional competition were resisted.

Watkins might not be coming off the back of his best season, but he still notched 17 goals and 14 assists across all competitions, while McGinn’s leadership, energy and presence within the dressing room are factors not easily replaced.

While the opening weeks of the campaign have felt somewhat stale, the mixture of fresh quality and abiding experience emphasises the club’s capacity to challenge in the Europa League and push for a high finish in the Premier League.

These players will play important roles this season, but none more so than Morgan Rogers, who was exceptional last season and might be viewed as the talisman of Emery’s project.

How Morgan Rogers' market value compares

Last month, Rogers was named the PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2024/25 Premier League season. The honour bears testament to his extraordinary strides in such a short time, only joining Villa from Middlesbrough in the Championship in January 2024.

The 23-year-old earned opportunities across the second half of the 2023/24 season in the Premier League, but it is last year that he truly came into his own, scoring 14 goals and supplying 16 assists across all competitions, including a haul of 19 goal contributions in the league alone.

He scored a hat-trick against Celtic in the Champions League and bagged a consolation goal as Villa were knocked out against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, with pundit Jamie Carragher hailing him as an “unstoppable” force.

The Lions might have started the campaign without much of a roar, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Rogers will be among the driving forces when Emery does create a winning formula for the months ahead.

Athletic and enterprising, no matter the tactical role handed to him, Rogers typically plays in a forward-thrust central midfield berth or out on the left flank, where his pace and power allow him to take on defenders and split lines.

Young he may be, but Rogers has already led a storied career, developing his talents in the EFL after first looking for success within Manchester City’s packed youth academy.

The exciting part is there’s still so much for the England international to give, so much potential as yet untapped.

Senior figures at Villa feel Rogers has the potential to become one of the very best in the Premier League, defining the coming years for Emery’s side and perhaps fetching a transfer fee to rival that of Liverpool’s Alexander Isak, who joined the champions from Newcastle United for a British record £125m fee on deadline day.

Isak's Premier League record before joining Liverpool.

One of the most dangerous strikers in the world, Isak’s name has come to be feared in English football, and he has made incremental progress across his three terms on Tyneside. Rogers, too, has shown the signs of bit-by-bit development, and could find himself stretching into even loftier conversations with another knockout year under Emery’s wing.

Indeed, as per CIES Football Observatory, Rogers has been valued at £99m, whereas Isak actually comes in at a smaller price: £89m.

Of course, this doesn’t paint an accurate picture in actuality, since Isak has just moved to Merseyside for a record-breaking fee. Still, it underscores the Three Lions star’s potential to develop into a star of a similar stature, having made such impressive progress across just one full season in the top flight.

Isak, 25, wasn’t refined when leaving Real Sociedad and arriving at St. James’ Park in 2022, but his years under Eddie Howe’s tutelage have shaped him into a superstar. So the parallels can be found with Rogers at Aston Villa.

Whether Aston Villa succeed in nurturing Rogers toward a world-class level remains to be seen, but there’s no question that he has the skills and passion to achieve just that.

Already considered by leading data and analytical site in CIES Football Observatory to have a projected value above that of Liverpool’s new striker (though take that with a pinch of salt, given Isak’s actual price), Rogers is the Midlands outfit’s biggest star, and many feel the best is still to come.

Anuerin Donald gives Falcons lift-off in successful 201 chase

Derbyshire get home comfortably to significantly dent Yorkshire’s quarter-final prospects

Aneurin Donald blitzed Yorkshire in the powerplay•Getty Images

A brutal innings from Aneurin Donald drove Derbyshire Falcons to a seven wicket victory over Yorkshire in the Vitality Blast North Group at Chesterfield.Donald reached 50 off 13 balls, the joint fastest in the Blast, and smashed seven sixes and eight fours in 85 from 30 balls as the Falcons cruised to a target of 201 in 17.2 overs with Wayne Madsen unbeaten on 38.It condemned Yorkshire to an eighth consecutive Blast defeat at Queen’s Park and puts a big dent in their chances of reaching the knockouts.Jordan Thompson hit four sixes in an 11 ball unbeaten 37 to take Yorkshire to 200 for 6 which looked competitive until Donald engaged the turbo with 90 coming in the powerplay.By contrast, Yorkshire started sedately before Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan found their range. Malan lifted Alex Thomson over cover for six and then straight drove Zak Chappell into the pavilion.Bairstow lofted Pat Brown out of the ground but the Falcons dismissed both openers in consecutive overs. Malan was bowled coming down the pitch to Mohammad Ghazanfar and Bairstow went trying to run Chappell to third man. After two tight overs, James Wharton pulled Martin Andersson for six but Will Luxton failed to clear long-on in Samit Patel’s second over.Wharton certainly did when he drove the Falcons skipper over the sightscreen and he dispatched Ghazanfar for another maximum in the 15th over. But his next attempt to clear the ropes landed in the hands of long-on to leave Yorkshire 125 for 4 in the 15th.Matty Revis also fell to a good running catch at long-on but Will Sutherland and Thompson took 22 off the 18th over from Chappell. Ross Whiteley pulled off a stunning leaping catch on the cover boundary to dismiss Sutherland but Thompson smashed three sixes off the last over from Chappell which cost 24.Donald launched the chase by taking 20 off Dom Bess and 25 came off the second over from Matt Milnes which included two big sixes from Donald. The onslaught continued with Donald swatting Will O’Rouke for another six and he reached his landmark 50 which also included six fours in the fourth over.Only 10 came off the next two overs but Donald scooped O’Rouke for his fifth six as the Falcons reached 90 without loss at the end of the powerplay.Donald swept Jafer Chohan for six to bring up the 100 in the eighth over and the opening stand with Caleb Jewell was worth 115 before the Australian mistimed a pull at Sutherland.Donald’s remarkable innings ended when he pulled Chohan to deep midwicket but there was no way back for Yorkshire as Madsen and Whiteley easily completed the Falcons third group victory.

'Hard to be positive about New Zealand cricket today'

Harsha Bhogle, Simon Doull and Mark Richardson discuss the state the team finds itself in ahead of its tour of India

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Aug-2012
What has been the impact on all the changes in New Zealand cricket off the field? (2.40 – 4.48)
Simon Doull: Too much change for my liking. It’s been a very difficult time for New Zealand cricket both on and off the field. Some very strange appointments, which probably date back a little earlier than Buchanan. I was very surprised when he picked up the job. I still think he has coaching aspirations, and perhaps that was why he didn’t get on too well with John Wright. If a guy of Wright’s standing cannot get along with the director of cricket then there are some real issues. For many years, New Zealand Cricket have thought that as long as we get Australians involved, we’ll get better. To me that is 100% wrong.Mark Richardson: New Zealand need leadership from the top. Unfortunately what we’ve seen over the last five or six years is that too much decision-making has come from the players, and a lot of those decisions haven’t been good. They need some very good decision-making coming from coaches, and I don’t think we’ve seen that. Now there’s a realisation that we need help.Does the lack of direction have to do with the captaincy of Daniel Vettori and Ross Taylor? (4.50 – 6.18)

“For many years, New Zealand Cricket have thought that as long as we get Australians involved, we’ll get better. To me that is 100% wrong”Simon Doull

MR: The New Zealand team really performed very well between 1999-2005. This is when Stephen Fleming took over the role. Steve Rixon came into the side and cleared out all the rubbish, got the culture right, got the key players moving in the right direction, and developed a young captain in Fleming. Then Fleming grew into the role and became a great leader, and set up a model whereby the captain did have power. However, Vettori, when he took over, wasn’t in the same situation as Fleming, and needed a strong coach to help him through. I don’t believe he got that. I believe he wanted all the power. A lot of poor decisions were made and that model has been handed through to Taylor. Why aren’t New Zealand punching above their weight now as they used to? (6.19 – 9.32)
SD: Fighting cricketers who worked their guts out to get the best out of themselves and get the best for the team – that’s what typified New Zealand cricket. I don’t see that fight at the moment. I don’t see the will to work hard, that I have seen in the past. We’ve always had one or two real class players but I don’t think in this team at the moment we have any world-class players. The fact that these guys are getting all of their money upfront – no performance bonuses, with no incentive to play well, is a bit of a problem for me.MR: Kane Williamson is a player of immense talent and he plays with a degree of maturity, responsibility and desire. [Brendon] McCullum is massively talented but massively overrated as well. Vettori once was a magnificent left-arm spinner. He is still very good but has lost the ability to take wickets. The team continues to make mistakes as a batting unit and players get out in the 60s and the 70s. They fail to make 400 regularly. You’ve got to be bowling sides out. New Zealand lack pace and lack spin. Vettori hasn’t been able to produce that role. The key players have failed to be the catalyst for performance and the youngsters simply aren’t at the level to make up for that. How do things look for New Zealand cricket? Also, is it a case of players such as Guptill and Ryder being better than their numbers suggest but not delivering? (9.33 – 12.30)
SD: As a commentator, when your team is playing well, your job is easy. You can find things to talk about all the time. We had two days through that whole West Indies tour over five and a half weeks where I was able to be positive about New Zealand cricket. That, for me, was very hard. It’s hard when you go into your daily job and can’t find things to be positive about. I’d like to think things will get better on the Indian tour, but I don’t see it. From what I’ve been told, Mike Hesson brings a fair bit of organisation and structure to the job but it’s too quick to try and turn things around in the space of a week and a half.MR: That’s the frustration of a New Zealand cricket fan. We see what these guys are capable of but most of them are trying to play a style of cricket that is not sustainable for them, and no one is grabbing them by the scruff of their neck, giving them a good shake and saying, “You can’t play this way and expect to be consistent.” They all seem to want to play like Virender Sehwag. They can’t, they are New Zealand cricketers. They’ve got to pull their horns in, and no one seems to have got that message through to them.Do we see New Zealand becoming a bigger force only in the shorter formats? (12.31 – 13.53)
SD: That would be nice if that was the truth. We were ranked No. 3 in ODIs and No. 3 in Tests three to four years ago. At the moment we are No. 8 in Tests and No. 7 in ODIs. So the stats are just not stacking up, to say that we’ll be a better one-day side. There will be the odd good performance, like there was in the World Cup, but remember, South Africa was the only side we had to beat in a one-off situation. To play and win three or four games in a row, we don’t seem to be able to do that. With Tim Southee, Doug Bracewell and Trent Boult, how’s the bowling unit? (13.54 – 17.25)
MR: New Zealand, in seamer-friendly conditions, are very good, very competitive. They look a different team. But those conditions are less and less around the world. It’s about being able to generate wickets in flat conditions. New Zealand lack genuine pace. There are some lively bowlers around in the first-class level but they just don’t seem to be making that next step up. Quite often we see a guy and say, “Wow, he’s got some pace”, but we see him in an international game with a speed gun on and he bowls at 135kph.Mark Richardson: “McCullum is massively talented but massively overrated as well”•AFPHow big a problem is the IPL, especially next May when New Zealand tour England? (17.26 – 20.30)
SD: I don’t see the IPL as a problem. Players have to realise how they got there. It’s because they performed at the international level for New Zealand. That’s the only reason you get to play in those tournaments, because the country puts you on the world stage. I wonder if too many players around the world forget the fact that that is where they were predominantly first seen, and that’s where their loyalties should lie.MR: For our key players, the IPL has become their greatest earner. When you are under pressure at the international level, you need an element of desperation to succeed. If success for your country is your livelihood, it’s what you must have to perform. Does that three-year contract in the IPL take away that little bit of desperation, even at a subconscious level, away from your performance when you’re playing for your country? I think that mentality has crept in just a little bit when it comes to our top players playing for New Zealand. What’s your forecast for the series in India? (20.32 – 23.38)
MR: New Zealand’s going to struggle. There is no form behind them. I can’t see this New Zealand team bowling out India [twice].Numbers Game (24.22 – 29.03)
Starting April 2006, New Zealand have won four and lost 23 out of 39 Tests against the top sides (excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe). Starting January 1, 1980, how many matches did they play to lose 23, and what was their win-loss record during that period?

Suryavanshi, 14, shatters records to keep RR alive

He smashed the second-fastest century in IPL history as RR chased down 210 in 15.5 overs

‘Otherworldly’ Suryavanshi wows Bishop, Aaron

In his third IPL match, the 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi brought down to their knees seasoned pros from the best bowling unit in IPL 2025, some of whom have been playing for longer than he has lived. The youngest T20 centurion, among the youngest handful of centurions in all representative cricket, the second-quickest century in the IPL in 35 balls, joint-most sixes – 11 – for an Indian in an IPL innings, highest boundary percentage in a T20 ton, with 94 of his runs coming in boundaries, Suryavanshi knocked off plenty of records. Oh, did we mention that it sealed the chase of 210 in 15.5 overs, the fastest successful chase of 200-plus in an IPL match, after Rajasthan Royals (RR) had lost three straight chases despite bossing 35 overs of those matches?Watch highlights of Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-breaking hundred on JioHotstarSuryavanshi’s opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal played a lovely unbeaten T20 innings of 70 off 40, but he was the first one to admit he was left in the background by “one of the best innings I have seen”.Suryavanshi tried to hit boundaries off 26 out of the 38 balls he faced. He nailed 15 of those attempts, but also got 25 off the 11 false shots when he tried to attack. The most impressive was a six over long-off off a slower hard-length ball from the tall Prasidh Krishna.A perfect mix of intent, skill and luck. All at an age when most kids are dreaming of doing exactly what he did. Or do they even dare dream so high?Gujarat Titans’ top three continue to score bigSurely, there must be teams thinking it is a matter of two wickets, and GT can be toppled. Yet, their top three keep churning out runs while making them look easy and risk-averse. At the end of the 20 overs, GT had all their top three in the top six run-getters in IPL 2025.B Sai Sudharsan regained his Orange Cap, but he wasn’t quite at his most fluent. Dropped on nine, he was dismissed for 39 off 30, but thanks to Shubman Gill’s quick start, GT still had 93 in 10.2 overs. This was the fifth stand of 50 or more for the pair in just nine innings.Brief slowdown before the explosionSai Sudharsan’s wicket brought a period of lull created by Wanindu Hasaranga’s three boundaryless overs. There was a period of four overs for 23 runs, which Gill broke with two sixes off Yudhvir Singh’s pace in the 14th over. Immediately after that, Jos Buttler, who had got off to a slow start of 7 off 10 balls, laid into Hasaranga first and then compatriot Jofra Archer.Hasaranga’s figures were rearranged to 4-0-39-0, and Archer went for 19 in the 18th over. Thought RR pulled things back with just 21 runs off the two last overs, not many gave them a chance of avoiding being knocked out.2:29

Rapid fire review: Jaiswal getting back to his best?

Suryavanshi and Jaiswal dominateIt might be tempting to think that RR had nothing to lose, which freed Suryavanshi up, but we have seen enough of him in the first two games to know he doesn’t need any external freedom. His first act of disdain came in the first over, off the second legal delivery he faced. Mohammed Siraj, rejuvenated after a break from international cricket, 12 wickets to his name, bowled on a good length, not half-volley, but Suryavanshi launched him over long-on.Related

At the start of the second over, Jaiswal was dropped, and he celebrated it with a six and three fours by the end of the third over. That was the last time Jaiswal enjoyed any kind of lead over his partner.Ishant Sharma was bowling that one extra over to Ricky Ponting in the Perth Test back in 2007-08. Suryavanshi was born in 2011. Ishant tried to bounce the kid, the kid hooked him for six. He overpitched slightly, and Suryavanshi whipped him over midwicket. Ishant did him with a slower one, but the momentum of charging down and his amazing bat speed put enough in the mis-hit to clear mid-off. Then he played the regulation cut so hard that the top edge flew over straight third for a six.Missing Gill because of back spasms in the second innings, GT were being led by Rashid Khan, who went to the offspin of Washington Sundar to the two left-hand batters. At 21, Washington was helping India win the Gabba Test and with that the most ridiculous Test series win of all time. There are levels to it, he was being shown now. Pull, sweep, inside-out drive over cover, and we had the youngest IPL half-centurion of all time, and the quickest this season, in 17 balls.2:31

Ian Bishop impressed with Gill’s crisp ‘timing of the ball’

Prasidh and Rashid brought some sanity to proceedings with ten runs in two overs. Prasidh is the second-highest wicket-taker this IPL. He is tall and generates disconcerting bounce from hard lengths. He can also bowl a mean slower ball into the pitch. That is exactly what he did. He might have expected some respect, but Suryavanshi hit him for a six over long-off off the back foot. The exclamation mark of the innings.IPL debutant Karim Janat was just a lamb to the slaughter with his gentle medium pace as Suryavanshi hit a boundary off each ball of the 30-run tenth over to take RR to 144. And himself to 94 off 34. The asking rate was now only a trickle above a run a ball.It was only fitting that the century came through a six. A six off someone who will be on the Mount Rushmore of T20 bowling. Rashid, who bowled four overs for just 24 amid all the mayhem. Just too quick and too accurate to punish. Suryavanshi kept trying without success, but finally broke even Rashid down.It took a pinpoint yorker from Krishna to send Suryavanshi on a slow walk back. The night he made his debut, Suryavanshi went back with tears in his eyes despite having wowed everyone with a six first ball. He wanted to show more of his batting. Did he ever.

A great admirer of everyone who played it well – a very good man indeed all-round. I suspect a lot of younger people like myself will remember him for what he brought to the radio.
“I shall remember him as a wonderful man first of all. He had a lovely waspish sense of humour. He was a very good clinical commentator. He commentated rather as he played cricket: he played it very hard in a very canny way, and he didn’t have room for people who gave half-measures. He was a wonderful batsman, a wonderful bowler, and he didn’t waste his words at the microphone either.”
Test Match Special”Trevor was a great friend for well over 60 years. We played football and cricket for Cambridge University and were colleagues in the Essex side for about 15 years. He was a great allrounder with a cast-iron temperament… one of a kind.”
“He was cricket and Essex, through and through.”
“Trevor was such a pain if you were playing against him – a damned nuisance in fact. You knew that if you could get this bloke out of the way, the chances were that you would win. All too frequently Ray Lindwall and I would find the task beyond us and it got under our skin.”
“I always felt that in the commentary box he thought like a bowler, rather than a batsman. He would often poke fun at his own stonewalling reputation, as when Kapil Dev had hit Eddie Hemmings for three consecutive sixes at Lord’s in 1990, to leave India needing six more to save the follow-on, with No. 11 in and only one more ball to go in the over. ‘I’d push the single,’ he said with a chuckle, as we all joined in with, ‘You would’.”

Spurs lining up £50m swoop for "deadly" forward who’s demolished Romero

Tottenham Hotspur will approach the summer transfer window with the same focus regardless of the final standings in the Premier League: Ange Postecoglou's priority is to sign a new striker.

There's no question that Spurs have made improvements from last season, where an eighth-place league finish left the outfit in tatters, Antonio Conte sacked in fiery circumstances and Harry Kane fleeing to Bayern Munich.

But Postecoglou has installed a fresh sense of belief, stamped in his identity, and inculcated an entertaining and enterprising style of play.

Kane hasn't actually been replaced – directly at least – and while Heung-min Son and Richarlison have found prolific success as central focal points, it would be foolish to avoid the lack of an out-and-out centre-forward.

Spurs lining up new striker

Postecoglou will likely seek reinforcements across the pitch but it's clear that signing a striker is at the front of his mind, with recent reports suggesting that a Premier League star is being lined up.

Indeed, according to Football Insider, Tottenham already have 'concrete interest' in Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke and are planning to launch a move this summer, with Andoni Iraola's club tagging him at £50m back in January.

However, the Cherries player has been in scintillating form this season and Spurs are not the only named suitors, with London rivals Arsenal and West Ham United eager to snap him up.

Dominic Solanke's season in numbers

Tottenham were drubbed on Tyneside for the second season running last weekend but have demonstrated overall progress across the campaign, currently perched in fifth place after 32 matches, three points behind Aston Villa in the top four having played a game less.

With the sixth-highest scoring record in the division this season, Tottenham certainly aren't struggling in forward phases but do lack that final sharpened point to lift them to new heights, and Solanke could be the solution.

The current Premier League campaign hasn't seen the kind of staggering goalscoring numbers from usual suspects Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah, but both world-class stars have maintained comparative levels of prolificness.

Solanke has also found himself in the mix. As per Sofascore, the 26-year-old has scored 17 goals and added three assists from 32 Premier League appearances this term, averaging 1.1 key passes, 1.1 dribbles and 5.5 successful duels per outing.

He's also scored just one penalty this season. While spot-kicks cannot be discredited, it does portray a measure of Solanke's prowess in and around the final third, finding ample goalscoring success from open play to underscore his elite movement and burgeoning ball-striking ability.

Look at the table above, when recording non-penalty goals, Solanke can be observed to stand behind only Ollie Watkins in the scoring charts, level with factory-built machine Erling Haaland.

It's a huge improvement from the 2022/23 season, where Solanke made an impression on his top-flight return with promoted Bournemouth, who stayed up relatively comfortably, having scored six goals and supplied seven assists from 32 fixtures.

While he's less creative, the one-cap England international has taken his clinical edge to another level, with former Bournemouth manager Scott Parker marvelling over his newfound deadliness at top-flight level.

Furthermore, given that he has already demolished Spurs centre-back Cristian Romero and recently sold Eric Dier during Tottenham's 3-2 home defeat against Bournemouth last season, scoring one goal and setting up two more, he clearly has the formula to inflict damage on high-level teams such as the Lilywhites.

Solanke notably ran rings around Dier, who received a dreary 4/10 match rating courtesy of Football.London, with Alasdair Gold noting of the defender's display that he was 'slow to react to Bournemouth's first two goals though and was caught upfield for the third.'

As for Romero, he could only muster a 5/10 rating having been 'sloppy' in the early stages of the clash.

It's no wonder that Tottenham are so desperate to secure his signature this summer.

Why Spurs are desperate to sign 'deadly' Solanke

While Solanke's goalscoring ability answers the primary question behind Tottenham's interest, he is developing into much more than a simple 'bagsman' and this is why a host of Europe-competing Premier League sides are pushing for a deal.

Solanke joined Bournemouth from Liverpool in a £19m transfer back in 2019 as a young forward who had failed his audition at Anfield, scoring one goal and supplying one assist from 27 senior displays.

His early years at the Vitality Stadium did little to prove his worth as a top-level goalscorer, scoring three times in 42 Premier League games for Bournemouth before their relegation, but there were signs of future prosperity.

His drop into the Championship was arguably the best thing for his development and he was hailed for having been shaped into a "top, multi-faceted forward" by The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, words that now ring true indeed.

For a team like Spurs, reliant on hard work and big bursts of energy, Solanke might just be the perfect player, offering something different, more predatory, than Richarlison and Son – the latter is prone to periods of struggle and Tottenham's captain is dynamic and creative and must be used in a deeper, more fluid role.

Moreover, Solanke is chipping in with over one key pass every game in the division this season, which highlights his quality as a multi-faceted centre-forward.

Kieffer Moore and Dominic Solanke celebrate for Bournemouth.

The £50k-per-week Englishman has a range of qualities and while several other exciting names are floating about on the transfer market at the moment, it's hard to dispute his polished ability in front of goal.

Tottenham, for now, will fight fervently against Aston Villa for a fourth-placed Premier League spot to confirm their presence next season in Europe's elite club competition, but with Postecoglou stirring up a promising project down N17, Solanke might just be convinced to join regardless.
