Aston Villa have not had the best of starts to the 2025/26 campaign, having picked up just one point from their opening three Premier League fixtures, yet to break their duck.
There was an acceptance from Unai Emery and the powers that be that the summer transfer window would weigh heavily on the club after missing out on Champions League football following a contentious final-day defeat at Manchester United.
However, a late flurry of activity indicates progress and promise. Jadon Sancho and Harvey Elliot completed deadline-day loan moves; Victor Lindelof joined on a free transfer after his deal with Man United expired.
The late moves salvaged Villa’s frustrating summer, especially since Monchi and Damian Vidagany have retained the services of the most talented first-teamers.
Aston Villa have kept their best players
In August, Aston Villa sold Jacob Ramsey to Premier League rivals Newcastle United for a £43m fee. A poignant one, for sure. However, the sale of the homegrown talent has turned pure profit for the club, and perhaps played a role in securing a series of late-window additions.
Loan deals for Marcus Rashford, Axel Disasi and Marco Asensio came and passed, but the likes of Ollie Watkins and John McGinn remain at Villa Park after offers from divisional competition were resisted.
Watkins might not be coming off the back of his best season, but he still notched 17 goals and 14 assists across all competitions, while McGinn’s leadership, energy and presence within the dressing room are factors not easily replaced.
While the opening weeks of the campaign have felt somewhat stale, the mixture of fresh quality and abiding experience emphasises the club’s capacity to challenge in the Europa League and push for a high finish in the Premier League.
These players will play important roles this season, but none more so than Morgan Rogers, who was exceptional last season and might be viewed as the talisman of Emery’s project.
How Morgan Rogers' market value compares
Last month, Rogers was named the PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2024/25 Premier League season. The honour bears testament to his extraordinary strides in such a short time, only joining Villa from Middlesbrough in the Championship in January 2024.
The 23-year-old earned opportunities across the second half of the 2023/24 season in the Premier League, but it is last year that he truly came into his own, scoring 14 goals and supplying 16 assists across all competitions, including a haul of 19 goal contributions in the league alone.
He scored a hat-trick against Celtic in the Champions League and bagged a consolation goal as Villa were knocked out against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, with pundit Jamie Carragher hailing him as an “unstoppable” force.
The Lions might have started the campaign without much of a roar, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Rogers will be among the driving forces when Emery does create a winning formula for the months ahead.
Athletic and enterprising, no matter the tactical role handed to him, Rogers typically plays in a forward-thrust central midfield berth or out on the left flank, where his pace and power allow him to take on defenders and split lines.

Young he may be, but Rogers has already led a storied career, developing his talents in the EFL after first looking for success within Manchester City’s packed youth academy.
The exciting part is there’s still so much for the England international to give, so much potential as yet untapped.
Senior figures at Villa feel Rogers has the potential to become one of the very best in the Premier League, defining the coming years for Emery’s side and perhaps fetching a transfer fee to rival that of Liverpool’s Alexander Isak, who joined the champions from Newcastle United for a British record £125m fee on deadline day.

One of the most dangerous strikers in the world, Isak’s name has come to be feared in English football, and he has made incremental progress across his three terms on Tyneside. Rogers, too, has shown the signs of bit-by-bit development, and could find himself stretching into even loftier conversations with another knockout year under Emery’s wing.
Indeed, as per CIES Football Observatory, Rogers has been valued at £99m, whereas Isak actually comes in at a smaller price: £89m.
Of course, this doesn’t paint an accurate picture in actuality, since Isak has just moved to Merseyside for a record-breaking fee. Still, it underscores the Three Lions star’s potential to develop into a star of a similar stature, having made such impressive progress across just one full season in the top flight.
Isak, 25, wasn’t refined when leaving Real Sociedad and arriving at St. James’ Park in 2022, but his years under Eddie Howe’s tutelage have shaped him into a superstar. So the parallels can be found with Rogers at Aston Villa.
Whether Aston Villa succeed in nurturing Rogers toward a world-class level remains to be seen, but there’s no question that he has the skills and passion to achieve just that.
Already considered by leading data and analytical site in CIES Football Observatory to have a projected value above that of Liverpool’s new striker (though take that with a pinch of salt, given Isak’s actual price), Rogers is the Midlands outfit’s biggest star, and many feel the best is still to come.

A brutal innings from Aneurin Donald drove Derbyshire Falcons to a seven wicket victory over Yorkshire in the Vitality Blast North Group at Chesterfield.Donald reached 50 off 13 balls, the joint fastest in the Blast, and smashed seven sixes and eight fours in 85 from 30 balls as the Falcons cruised to a target of 201 in 17.2 overs with Wayne Madsen unbeaten on 38.It condemned Yorkshire to an eighth consecutive Blast defeat at Queen’s Park and puts a big dent in their chances of reaching the knockouts.Jordan Thompson hit four sixes in an 11 ball unbeaten 37 to take Yorkshire to 200 for 6 which looked competitive until Donald engaged the turbo with 90 coming in the powerplay.By contrast, Yorkshire started sedately before Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan found their range. Malan lifted Alex Thomson over cover for six and then straight drove Zak Chappell into the pavilion.Bairstow lofted Pat Brown out of the ground but the Falcons dismissed both openers in consecutive overs. Malan was bowled coming down the pitch to Mohammad Ghazanfar and Bairstow went trying to run Chappell to third man.After two tight overs, James Wharton pulled Martin Andersson for six but Will Luxton failed to clear long-on in Samit Patel’s second over.Wharton certainly did when he drove the Falcons skipper over the sightscreen and he dispatched Ghazanfar for another maximum in the 15th over. But his next attempt to clear the ropes landed in the hands of long-on to leave Yorkshire 125 for 4 in the 15th.Matty Revis also fell to a good running catch at long-on but Will Sutherland and Thompson took 22 off the 18th over from Chappell. Ross Whiteley pulled off a stunning leaping catch on the cover boundary to dismiss Sutherland but Thompson smashed three sixes off the last over from Chappell which cost 24.Donald launched the chase by taking 20 off Dom Bess and 25 came off the second over from Matt Milnes which included two big sixes from Donald. The onslaught continued with Donald swatting Will O’Rouke for another six and he reached his landmark 50 which also included six fours in the fourth over.Only 10 came off the next two overs but Donald scooped O’Rouke for his fifth six as the Falcons reached 90 without loss at the end of the powerplay.Donald swept Jafer Chohan for six to bring up the 100 in the eighth over and the opening stand with Caleb Jewell was worth 115 before the Australian mistimed a pull at Sutherland.Donald’s remarkable innings ended when he pulled Chohan to deep midwicket but there was no way back for Yorkshire as Madsen and Whiteley easily completed the Falcons third group victory.

It’s been a very difficult time for New Zealand cricket both on and off the field. Some very strange appointments, which probably date back a little earlier than Buchanan. I was very surprised when he picked up the job. I still think he has coaching aspirations, and perhaps that was why he didn’t get on too well with John Wright. If a guy of Wright’s standing cannot get along with the director of cricket then there are some real issues. For many years, New Zealand Cricket have thought that as long as we get Australians involved, we’ll get better. To me that is 100% wrong.Mark Richardson: New Zealand need leadership from the top. Unfortunately what we’ve seen over the last five or six years is that too much decision-making has come from the players, and a lot of those decisions haven’t been good. They need some very good decision-making coming from coaches, and I don’t think we’ve seen that. Now there’s a realisation that we need help.Does the lack of direction have to do with the captaincy of Daniel Vettori and Ross Taylor? (4.50 – 6.18)

MR: The New Zealand team really performed very well between 1999-2005. This is when Stephen Fleming took over the role. Steve Rixon came into the side and cleared out all the rubbish, got the culture right, got the key players moving in the right direction, and developed a young captain in Fleming. Then Fleming grew into the role and became a great leader, and set up a model whereby the captain did have power. However, Vettori, when he took over, wasn’t in the same situation as Fleming, and needed a strong coach to help him through. I don’t believe he got that. I believe he wanted all the power. A lot of poor decisions were made and that model has been handed through to Taylor.Why aren’t New Zealand punching above their weight now as they used to? (6.19 – 9.32) SD: Fighting cricketers who worked their guts out to get the best out of themselves and get the best for the team – that’s what typified New Zealand cricket. I don’t see that fight at the moment. I don’t see the will to work hard, that I have seen in the past. We’ve always had one or two real class players but I don’t think in this team at the moment we have any world-class players. The fact that these guys are getting all of their money upfront – no performance bonuses, with no incentive to play well, is a bit of a problem for me.MR: Kane Williamson is a player of immense talent and he plays with a degree of maturity, responsibility and desire. [Brendon] McCullum is massively talented but massively overrated as well. Vettori once was a magnificent left-arm spinner. He is still very good but has lost the ability to take wickets. The team continues to make mistakes as a batting unit and players get out in the 60s and the 70s. They fail to make 400 regularly. You’ve got to be bowling sides out. New Zealand lack pace and lack spin. Vettori hasn’t been able to produce that role. The key players have failed to be the catalyst for performance and the youngsters simply aren’t at the level to make up for that.How do things look for New Zealand cricket? Also, is it a case of players such as Guptill and Ryder being better than their numbers suggest but not delivering? (9.33 – 12.30) SD: As a commentator, when your team is playing well, your job is easy. You can find things to talk about all the time. We had two days through that whole West Indies tour over five and a half weeks where I was able to be positive about New Zealand cricket. That, for me, was very hard. It’s hard when you go into your daily job and can’t find things to be positive about. I’d like to think things will get better on the Indian tour, but I don’t see it. From what I’ve been told, Mike Hesson brings a fair bit of organisation and structure to the job but it’s too quick to try and turn things around in the space of a week and a half.MR: That’s the frustration of a New Zealand cricket fan. We see what these guys are capable of but most of them are trying to play a style of cricket that is not sustainable for them, and no one is grabbing them by the scruff of their neck, giving them a good shake and saying, “You can’t play this way and expect to be consistent.” They all seem to want to play like Virender Sehwag. They can’t, they are New Zealand cricketers. They’ve got to pull their horns in, and no one seems to have got that message through to them.Do we see New Zealand becoming a bigger force only in the shorter formats? (12.31 – 13.53) SD: That would be nice if that was the truth. We were ranked No. 3 in ODIs and No. 3 in Tests three to four years ago. At the moment we are No. 8 in Tests and No. 7 in ODIs. So the stats are just not stacking up, to say that we’ll be a better one-day side. There will be the odd good performance, like there was in the World Cup, but remember, South Africa was the only side we had to beat in a one-off situation. To play and win three or four games in a row, we don’t seem to be able to do that.With Tim Southee, Doug Bracewell and Trent Boult, how’s the bowling unit? (13.54 – 17.25) MR: New Zealand, in seamer-friendly conditions, are very good, very competitive. They look a different team. But those conditions are less and less around the world. It’s about being able to generate wickets in flat conditions. New Zealand lack genuine pace. There are some lively bowlers around in the first-class level but they just don’t seem to be making that next step up. Quite often we see a guy and say, “Wow, he’s got some pace”, but we see him in an international game with a speed gun on and he bowls at 135kph.Mark Richardson: “McCullum is massively talented but massively overrated as well”•AFPHow big a problem is the IPL, especially next May when New Zealand tour England? (17.26 – 20.30) SD: I don’t see the IPL as a problem. Players have to realise how they got there. It’s because they performed at the international level for New Zealand. That’s the only reason you get to play in those tournaments, because the country puts you on the world stage. I wonder if too many players around the world forget the fact that that is where they were predominantly first seen, and that’s where their loyalties should lie.MR: For our key players, the IPL has become their greatest earner. When you are under pressure at the international level, you need an element of desperation to succeed. If success for your country is your livelihood, it’s what you must have to perform. Does that three-year contract in the IPL take away that little bit of desperation, even at a subconscious level, away from your performance when you’re playing for your country? I think that mentality has crept in just a little bit when it comes to our top players playing for New Zealand.What’s your forecast for the series in India? (20.32 – 23.38) MR: New Zealand’s going to struggle. There is no form behind them. I can’t see this New Zealand team bowling out India [twice].Numbers Game (24.22 – 29.03) Starting April 2006, New Zealand have won four and lost 23 out of 39 Tests against the top sides (excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe). Ebadot Hossain returns to the Bangladesh team for the first time in almost two years, after being named in the 16-man squad for the two Tests against Sri Lanka later this month. He has recovered from an ACL surgery after he was injured during an ODI against Afghanistan in July 2023. Litton Das also returns to the Test side after he was given time off during the Zimbabwe series in April.The selectors, meanwhile, have dropped Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Tanvir Islam and Tanzim Hasan for the Sri Lanka Tests.
