Rejuvenated Galle Gladiators look to find a way past Wanindu Hasaranga

Stallions’ legspinner has excelled with his googlies, taking 16 wickets at an economy rate of 5.27

Say cheese: The Jaffna Stallions players and staff pose for a team photo ahead of final•SLC/LPL

How the teams stack upOn the surface Galle Gladiators don’t deserve to be in this final. They’ve won only a third of their matches in the tournament, and their semi-final opponents suffered several injuries in Sunday’s nail-biter. And yet, when you look at the attack they’ve suddenly managed to string together towards the end of the tournament, you can’t really begrudge them their place either.Dhananjaya Lakshan, who swings the ball into the right-hander substantially, and bowls a collection of slower balls, has been perhaps the find of the tournament. Nuwan Thushara, who slings it round-arm like Lasith Malinga, has been effective with the new ball, and at the death. Lakshan Sandakan has found a T20 strategy that seems to be working for him: frequently pushing the ball wide, while also bowling quicker through the air than he used to. Mohammad Amir has led the attack, revelling in the swinging conditions the tournament has seen over the past week. As if by magic, Gladiators have three of the top five wicket-takers in the tournament, Sandakan having taken 11 wickets, while Lakshan and Amir have 10 apiece. And yet, despite this, Jaffna Stallions feel their attack is still the best in the competition. Largely this is down to Wanindu Hasaranga, who has been the tournament’s middle-overs monster, taking 16 wickets in all and even more impressively, maintaining an economy rate of 5.27 across his 33 overs. To put that economy rate in perspective, no other bowler who has taken a wicket in the LPL can come close to matching it. Batsmen know it is his googly they have to watch out for, and yet have succumbed to it en masse. There’s variety here too. Usman Shinwari’s pace can be deployed almost anywhere in the innings. Duanne Olivier has been bowling much slower than he is capable of, but has worked on his control through the course of the tournament. And as seen on Monday, Dhananjaya de Silva is a fine supporting spinner, particularly when bowling to left-handers (Gladiators’ Danushka Gunathilaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa are both leftie batsmen), and Shoaib Malik’s darts can be effective through the middle overs, and even at the death. On the batting front, there is less to these sides. Gunathilaka has been in searing touch at the top of the innings for Galle, but although they scrambled to their modest target on Sunday, that middle order still seems a little flimsy. Stallions, meanwhile, have had runs from Avishka Fernando and Thisara Perera through the course of the tournament, but there’s no one in that line-up that can be said to be in irresistible form.Danushka Gunathilaka tugs one away•LPL

Watch out forGunathilaka v Stallions’ spinnersIn the two previous matches against Stallions, Gunathilaka made 56 off 44 and 38 off 30, and was dismissed on both occasions by Hasaranga. In the final, he may have to face a different spinner before he even gets to Hasaranga, though. Stallions deployed Dhananjaya de Silva’s offspin at the top of the innings on Sunday, to excellent effect, and perhaps they will do so again to target Gunathilaka in particular.Related

Mohammad Amir v Avishka FernandoIf there is one team Fernando has enjoyed playing against in this tournament, it has been the Gladiators. He made 92 not out off 63 against them in their first match, and 84 off 59 in the second. Stallions haven’t played them since Amir’s bowling came to life late in the league stage, however, and Fernando has been a nervy starter against pace. If there is swing in the air, this shapes as an intriguing battle.Head to headIn spirit, this is not the same Gladiators outfit that Stallions had played in the league stage, but for what it’s worth, Stallions eased to two victories chasing down 176 and 171.Team newsGladiators are sweating on the fitness of Chadwick Walton and Thushara. Walton, who has pulled a hamstring, is not likely to play, but captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa said he would consider having Walton in the side if he was at least “75% fit”. Thushara, meanwhile, had played the semi-final with a niggle, which may have worsened the injury. He will be assessed on ahead of the match.Galle Gladiators (probable):1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Ahsan Ali, 3 Bhanuka Rajapaksa (capt.), 4 Azam Khan (wk), 5 Sahan Arachchige, 6 Shehan Jayasuriya, 7 Chanaka Ruwansiri, 8 Dhananjaya Lakshan, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Lakshan Sandakan, 11 Nuwan ThusharaStallions are understood to have a full squad to pick from. It’s likely they will go with the same XI.Jaffna Stallions (probable): 1 Avishka Fernando, 2 Johnson Charles (wk), 3 Charith Asalanka, 4 Shoaib Malik, 5 Thisara Perera (capt.), 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Chaturanga de Silva, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Usman Shinwari, 11 Duanne OlivierStats and trivia Galle Gladiators took their wickets at an abysmal average of 49.05 until their fifth game – easily the worst in the league. In their four most-recent matches they’ve taken their wickets at 18.78, which is easily the best.Wanindu Hasaranga has bowled 97 dot balls in his 33 LPL overs. This means almost half his deliveries have been dots or wickets. He’s only conceded eight sixes and nine fours. Danushka Gunathilaka’s tournament run tally of 475 is 227 better than that of Stallions’ most prolific batsman, Avishka Fernando. When the LPL franchises went on sale, Galle was the first to be snapped up, by Quetta Gladiators owner Nadeem Omar.

The Whitecaps shifted over 50,000 tickets for an eagerly-anticipated encounter that was expected to see eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi take to the field. He was, however, to play no part in a 2-1 win for the Herons.

That is because he was left back in Florida, alongside fellow former Barcelona stars Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets. Inter Miami are having to manage his workload carefully, as the Argentine prepares to turn 37, but his absence from any fixture hits supporters and promoters hard.

Vancouver natives were clearly disappointed at missing out on the chance to watch the all-time great in action, with a number of Inter Miami jerseys being tweaked to hammer home the fact that Messi was “missing”.

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?

It is not the first time that Messi’s absence has caused controversy – as a political storm was sparked in Hong Kong during pre-season – and will not be the last, as he remains tied to a contract through 2025. He is, however, expected to be back in action on Wednesday when Inter Miami play host to Atlanta United.

'It stinks!' – Ex-Chelsea star expects Premier League to keep 'looking after the elite' by agreeing deal to stage games in United States

NBC pushing for EPL games in U.S.Sutton predicts it will happenSays the potential move 'stinks'Getty Images WHAT HAPPENED?

The American broadcasting giants are reportedly keen for the opening matches of the Premier League season to be played in the U.S., where EPL broadcasting is more lucrative than in any other overseas nation. Former Chelsea and Blackburn star Sutton is one of many pundits that are highly suspicious of the move, but on the latest edition of the It's All Kicking Off podcast, he predicted that it's inevitable "because money dictates everything".

AdvertisementWHAT SUTTON SAID

Sutton said: 'I do I think it will happen eventually, probably because money dictates everything. But just think back to the start of the season. Do you think the U.S. audience would have enjoyed an opening game of Sheffield United against Burnley? It's about just looking after the big boys, isn't it, commercially? Looking after the elite. And that's why it stinks a bit. It will not stink if it's the same across the board. If everybody is involved and every team in the Premier League gets a shot at it."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Premier League recently confirmed that it has no plans to stage matches in the U.S. right now, but NBC Sports are continuing to push for games to be played across the pond. An increasing number of friendly matches between English teams are taking place in the U.S., encapsulated by the Premier League Summer Series, but the vast majority of fans in the UK believe that playing EPL matches abroad is a step too far.

Getty/GOALWHAT NEXT FOR THE PREMIER LEAGUE?

While debates about matches in America rumble along in the background, the Premier League is still hurtling towards its end-of-season climax. Most teams only have two matches yet and the league title is still up for grabs, with Arsenal hoping to topple Manchester City in the closest title race for years.

Pujara's best overseas tally vaults him to No. 3 in Test rankings

India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and South Africa fast bowler Duanne Olivier were also big gainers

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jan-2019Cheteshwar Pujara’s tally of 521 runs in the four Tests in Australia, his best-ever returns on an overseas tour, has vaulted him to third spot in the ICC rankings for Test batsmen. His runs were crucial in India’s historic 2-1 series win that extended their run at the top of the team standings, while Australia remained fifth despite losing a point.Pujara struck his overseas best of 193 in the drawn fourth Test in Sydney, to follow centuries in Adelaide and Melbourne, and was named Player of the Series. Elsewhere, Rishabh Pant, who also brought up his best Test score of 159 not out in Sydney, was another big gainer, jumping 21 spots to vault into the top 20. No Indian wicketkeeper has been ranked higher in the batting rankings than Pant, who now sits at No. 17.Pant’s aggregate of 673 points are the highest-ever by an Indian wicketkeeper. MS Dhoni, who retired from Tests in December 2014, held the previous highest rating points (662), and his highest ranking was No. 19. Pant was India’s second-highest run scorer in the series with 350 runs. In addition, he also collected 20 dismissals. In the first Test in Adelaide, Pant took 11 catches to equal the world record for most catches by a wicketkeeper in a Test. He eclipsed the all-time India record of 10 catches by Wriddhiman Saha, and drew level with England wicketkeeper Jack Russell and South Africa’s AB de Villiers.Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja gained one place to be listed fifth among bowlers, even as he surpassed West Indies captain Jason Holder to climb to second place among allrounders. Jadeja played only the final two Tests, picking seven wickets in addition to a counter-attacking half-century in Sydney.A few South Africa players also moved up the rankings table, having taken an unassailable lead in the three-match series, with victories in the first two Tests in Centurion and Cape Town. Opening batsman Aiden Markram moved back into the top 10 after scoring 78 in South Africa’ eight-wicket win over Pakistan in the Cape Town Test. He slotted in at No. 10, while team-mate Temba Bavuma moved into the top 30 for the first time.Among the bowlers, Vernon Philander has gained one position to reach third place while Duanne Olivier, who picked 16 wickets in two Tests, continued his surge to move up to 32nd place from 36th.

Juan Soto Leaves Mets Game After Fouling Ball Hard Off of Foot

Juan Soto was forced out of action in the third inning against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night after fouling a ball hard off of his own foot.

Facing off against Padres starter Ryan Bergert, the Mets superstar fouled off a ball while trying to stay alive on an 0-2 count, and wound up in a world of hurt.

While Soto would collect himself and tough it out to complete the at-bat, he did not return to the field come the bottom half of the inning. The team would later announce that he had been removed due to a foot contusion.

Soto wasn’t the only star to get bit by the injury bug on Tuesday night. Brewers slugger Jackson Chourio hustled for a triple but finished his run limping and staggering, and would be removed from the game.

Ronald Acuna Jr. also had to exit his game early, with the Braves citing Achilles tightness.

Let’s hope for the best with all these players in their recovery as their teams gear up for the stretch run of the regular season.

Gunaratne's seam-up variation, Panyangara's errant front foot

Plays of the day from the first match of the Zimbabwe tri-series, between the hosts and Sri Lanka

Karthik Krishnaswamy14-Nov-2016The seam-up variationAsela Gunaratne is nominally a medium-pacer, but showed he’s an unusual member of the species on his ODI debut. He ran in like a medium-pacer, went through his delivery stride like a medium-pacer, but gripped the ball and released it like an offspinner. Having taken two wickets with his offcutter, he was now bowling to Zimbabwe’s No. 11, Tinashe Panyangara, who had slogged him with the turn for a boundary through midwicket in his previous over. Now came the change-up. Ordinarily, medium-pacers bowl their stock ball with the seam upright, and use the cutters as a variation. Gunaratne flipped it around. Out came a seam-up ball, swinging away just a hint. Like R Ashwin’s arm ball, but quicker. Panyangara slogged across the line again, but this time only managed a top-edge that ballooned to the fielder at cover. The no-ballZimbabwe were only defending 154, and Panyangara, coming back to the side after a spell out injured, bowled a beauty first up with the new ball. It pitched just back of a length, and curved away from close to off stump, leaving Dhananjaya de Silva feeling uncertainly for the ball and nicking to the keeper. It was the perfect start. Almost. Zimbabwe’s players aborted their celebrations almost as soon as they began them, seeing the umpire’s arm shoot out to his side, signaling no-ball. Panyangara had overstepped. De Silva went on to make an unbeaten 78.The grabZimbabwe’s new-ball bowlers had begun erratically, dropping the ball far too short, far too often, and Kusal Perera and de Silva had pulled Donald Tiripano and Panyangara for three fours in the space of five balls spread across the eighth and ninth overs of Sri Lanka’s innings. Chamu Chibhabha came on to bowl the 11th over, and dropped short with just his second ball. Perera’s eyes lit up, and he swiveled through another pull. This time, though, he sliced underneath it a little, and though he had middled it, he had hit it in the air. It still left the man at deep square leg a fair amount of yardage to cover, but Zimbabwe had their best fielder there, Sikandar Raza. He sprinted quickly to his left, and completed the catch with an athletic tumble.Drop, deflect, overthrowIn the 13th over of Zimbabwe’s innings, Chamu Chibhabha spotted de Silva stepping out of his crease and shifted his line wide of off stump. De Silva went for a flat-bat drive, met it well, but hit it straight back at the bowler, a foot or so to his left. Chibhabha reached out, got his palms to the ball, but couldn’t hold on to the catch, ending up deflecting the ball towards the man at short extra-cover instead. Graeme Cremer picked up the ball, saw de Silva moving back towards his crease, and fired a throw at the stumps. He missed, and ended up conceding two overthrows.

American fans savour their slice of live cricket

For the USA’s cricket converts, the weekend in Florida was one to remember

Aishwarya Kumar in Florida 28-Aug-2016They are sporting their India jerseys. Their faces are painted with the tricolour flag. They carry posters of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. You would assume they are Indians supporting their team.Wrong. They are Americans, who’ve come to love and support the Indian cricket team. Why?Their best friend is from India and so they ended up learning the sport and rooting for Virat Kohli along with their friend. Their boyfriend is from India, and they ended up watching the Australia v India 2015 World Cup match. Or their boss is a hardcore India fan and they have the TV tuned to ESPN whenever the team is playing, and so have no other choice but to learn the game. These were some of the stories of Americans in Central Broward Regional Park in Florida during the India v West Indies T20 series this weekend. It is one thing for a fan of Indian origin to fly down from the west or north to catch India’s first official series in the USA. But it is a totally different thing for an American to fly down from states like Texas, Massachusetts and North Carolina for it.And these particular fans were glad they did.”It is such a good experience. I mean we get excited when we watch it on TV, but there is nothing like watching a cricket match in person,” Gabi Garza, an international studies student at the University of North Texas, said. For most American fans, the closest sport to cricket is baseball. Some of them at Sunday’s T20 made the connection. Some went as far as to say they did not think baseball was as engaging as cricket.”Cricket is baseball on steroids,” Rachel B, a cricket fan from Boston who started following the sport recently with her Indian-American boss, said.Watching the sport with a large group of Indian immigrants, expats and second generation Indian-Americans made it even better for these American fans. Many of them said the atmosphere felt more electric than that at NFL and baseball games.”I have been to a football game. But it’s nothing like it is here. The drums, the dressed-up people, the face-paintings…” said Molly Ruble, an autism researcher from North Carolina, who flew down for the series with her boyfriend Swapnil Gupta. While some of these Americans were just starting to understand the sport, others had a deep knowledge of the technical part of it. Cricketing terms like googly and chase peppered their speech. And they all wanted two things: for India to win, and for there to be more international cricket series in the USA.Stephanie Reiland, a lawyer from Alabama who was in Florida with her Indian friends, echoed the sentiments of many when she said: “I’m glad that cricket is coming to the United States.”

Arsenal now "most likely" team to sign £33m forward, Arteta loves his pace

da fezbet: Arsenal are now believed to be the favourites to sign a forward who Mikel Arteta idolises for his speed, with the Gunners expected to have a busy summer after failing to make a single new signing in the January transfer window.

Arsenal set for "big summer" after uneventful January

da pinnacle: Their 2-0 loss to Newcastle earlier this week, not to mention injuries to Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, highlight the need for Arteta’s side to acquire more options for the final third ahead of next season.

What Newcastle are now demanding for Isak with Arsenal handed £75m discount

While their January was mostly uneventful, despite a widely reported Arsenal bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, reliable journalist Charles Watts expects the club to have a “big summer” as they look to mount another Premier League title challenge next campaign.

However, the journalist also sends a word of caution, with a lot of Arteta’s preferred targets potentially very hard to obtain.

“Alexander Isak may well be first choice in Mikel Arteta’s mind. But that would be an incredibly difficult deal to get done given the sort of fee it would take to tempt Newcastle into doing business,” said Watts.

“Benjamin Sesko – another long-term target – is far more gettable and there is a relationship already there, with the player and his representatives and with RB Leipzig as well.

“But there will be rival interest in the Slovenia international. So it’s not a foregone conclusion that Arsenal will land him if they do firm up their interest once again. The same could be said for Nico Williams, who is another player Arteta would love to sign, but one who several clubs will be in the mix for come the summer.

“So, whilst I do believe it will be a big summer for Arsenal in the transfer market and that the club will look to be aggressive, it will not be easy given the competition they will face for their top targets.”

Now, according to a report from Spain, Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi has emerged as a potentially astute option.

Arsenal are now the "most likely" team to sign Karim Adeyemi

Indeed, it is believed that Arteta is a real fan of the forward’s pace, balance and proficiency in front of goal – so much so that Arsenal are now the “most likely” team to sign Adeyemi this summer.

The north Londoners are prepared to make a concerted effort to seal a deal for the German, who could cost around £33 million, which is the price Napoli apparently agreed for his signature in January before the move fell through.

Adeyemi, meanwhile, is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League. Interestingly, he’s also drawn past comparisons to footballing icon Lionel Messi.

“You know who he reminds me of, in his movements?,” said former Poland international Janusz Gora in an interview with The Athletic. “Lionel Messi. The way he glides inside from the right onto his strong left foot with quick little turns.”

Guardiola must boldly drop Man City’s 4/10 dud who was poor vs Villa

Manchester City suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The loss marks Pep Guardiola’s ninth in his previous 12 matches, which represents the worst run of form since he took over at the Etihad back in the summer of 2016.

What is going wrong at the Champions? Obviously, they are missing the presence of Rodri at the heart of their midfield, but elsewhere, nothing is happening.

Against Villa, the club managed 12 total shots, yet could only find the back of the net once, which came as the match was entering the dying embers.

It is evident that something is lacking up front and Erling Haaland has looked like a shadow of his former self in recent months, scoring just three Premier League goals since the end of September and this run extended on Saturday.

Erling Haaland’s stats vs Aston Villa

The striker was once again tasked with leading the line for City, looking to add to his 13 league goals.

Unfortunately, it was yet another dismal display by the Norwegian hitman. Throughout the course of the match, he managed to complete just eight of his 12 passes, while taking only 18 touches.

Indeed, this was 19 touches fewer than goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, showing just how little he was actually involved against Unai Emery’s side.

Haaland registered just one shot, which was off target, while he failed with his only dribble and lost possession six times. Hardly the performance that Guardiola was expecting from his number nine, especially as a couple of goals would have bolstered his confidence.

Erling Haaland

Charlie Gordon of the Daily Express gave Haaland a match rating of just 4/10 for his display, stating that he ‘offered very little and his hold-up play was poor. Haaland’s torrid run continues’ and the manager will have to turn to the drawing board.

Pep Guardiola must drop Erling Haaland

The obvious thing to do would be to drop the former Borussia Dortmund striker to the bench for the next game, but it isn’t as clear-cut as that.

Indeed, who could replace him? City sold Julian Alvarez in the summer and Guardiola doesn’t have a like-for-like option to slot in Haaland’s place.

He could perhaps go with a false nine instead, utilising someone like Phil Foden in that role to good effect.

The Englishman is hardly enjoying the form of his life either, however, which makes this change more risky than it should be, but he did find the back of the net in this defeat, which could spark his and City’s season into life.

Could this see the club dive into the transfer market for another striker to give Haaland some much-needed competition? Only time will tell.

The manager has to change something, as the way it stands, they won’t even qualify for the Champions League next season.
