Man Utd in talks to sign "unstoppable" £52m star who's 99th percentile in key stat

Manchester United are now in talks to sign an “unstoppable” player, Laurie Whitwell has revealed in a report for The Athletic.

Man Utd's striker pursuit heating up

Man United have already confirmed the arrival of Matheus Cunha, while the deal for Bryan Mbeumo appears to be edging closer to completion, meaning Ruben Amorim’s next task may be to secure the signature of a new striker.

There are a number of exciting options on INEOS’ shortlist, many of whom were prolific in front of goal last season, although some price tags could be an issue, given that United missed out on Champions League qualification.

In a report for The Athletic, Whitwell has now dropped a new update on Man United’s pursuit of a new striker, stating that Ekitike is out of their price range, while a deal for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen could be tricky, given the Nigerian’s high wages.

Amorim would like to seal a reunion with Gyokeres, but the Sweden international is prioritising a move to Arsenal, meaning the Red Devils could be forced to move on to other targets, and they have now held talks over a deal for Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku.

Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku celebrates scoring at the Club World Cup.

Nkunku’s name is said to have been discussed during negotiations over the departure of Alejandro Garnacho, who recently did himself no favours by being pictured wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford’s name on the back.

Nkunku would, presumably, be a more affordable signing than Ekitike, having originally signed for Chelsea for a fee of £52m back in 2023.

"Unstoppable" Nkunku may need to leave Chelsea this summer

The Frenchman often found game time hard to come by last season, and the seemingly imminent arrival of Joao Pedro is likely to do the forward no favours, so it is likely he will need to leave the Blues this summer for the good of his career.

There are some signs the 27-year-old could be the solution to United’s attacking issues, too, having received very high praise from journalist Zach Lowy during his time with RB Leipzig.

The former Leipzig man is also a solid all-rounder, placing in the top 1% for interceptions and his pass-completion rate per 90 over the past year, when compared to other forwards.

That said, Nkunku’s record in front of goal is likely to be a major cause for concern, with the forward finding the back of the net just three times in the Premier League last season, so a move for either Gyokeres or Toney would make more sense.

Nick Hockley to step down as Cricket Australia chief executive

He came into the role amid the Covid-19 pandemic having worked on the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup

Andrew McGlashan06-Aug-2024Nick Hockley has announced he will step down as Cricket Australia chief executive in March 2025 after five years in the job.Hockley, who has worked in the Australian game in various positions for 13 years, initially came into the role in an interim capacity early in the Covid-19 pandemic after Kevin Roberts resigned following unrest at CA’s initial handling of crisis which included a mass stand down of staff. He was appointed full time in May 2021 having helped the game navigate the 2020-21 season amid border closures which included successfully hosting the Test series against India that ensured the game was able to survive financially.”This was a difficult decision, however following what promises to be a blockbuster summer and with our five-year strategic plan well progressed, this is the right time to pursue another challenge, while giving the Board plenty of time to find its next CEO to build on the strong foundations now in place,” Hockley said.”This is not the time for goodbyes, as I remain completely focussed on the season ahead and supporting the Board on succession and a smooth transition.”Hockley’s final season in charge of CA will again see India visit, this time for a five-Test series, as well as the hosting of the Women’s Ashes in January.Alongside the pandemic, the major challenges on Hockley’s watch included an associated stand-off with broadcaster Channel Seven who pushed for a discount. Relationships were later repaired to an extent that Seven has remained a long-term broadcast partner, although the new seven-year deal signed with them and Foxtel in 2023 did not produce a significant uplift in value. However, he was able to oversee a much smoother MoU agreement compared to 2017 which included large pay increases in the women’s game.Hockley had to contend with the controversial departure of Tim Paine as Test captain on the eve of the 2021-22 Ashes, although the transition to Pat Cummins eventually proved smooth and successful, and an ugly split with head coach Justin Langer.Hockley also attempted to have David Warner’s lifetime leadership ban overturned although that fell apart in late 2022 when Warner angrily withdrew his case amid pressure from an independent panel to relive what happened at Newlands in 2018.He has been in charge during a period of significant on-field success which has included the men’s and women’s teams winning T20 and ODI World Cups plus the men claiming last year’s World Test Championship and the women gold in the Commonwealth Games. Significantly, in 2022 the men’s team also toured Pakistan for the first time since 1998.One of the major projects he has led in recent years has been the implementation of CA’s Multicultural Action Plan which aims to improve participation and attendance among the South Asian communities.”As CEO, Nick navigated the sport through a period of unprecedented challenge during the pandemic and has delivered significant growth and stability,” CA chair Mike Baird said. “Under Nick’s leadership, several major deals are now in place – many for the next seven years – and the game is set up for continued success.”As Nick says, his full focus is on delivering another successful summer for our fans, players, broadcasters, partners and the whole of Australian Cricket and there will be time to celebrate his legacy and achievements when he steps down from the role next year.”Prior to his hasty elevation into the top CA role, Hockley had been chief executive of the 2020 T20 Women’s World Cup committee that had staged the record-breaking tournament in Australia. Before that, he had worked on the 2015 Men’s World Cup, having also previously been involved in the London Olympics.CA will search globally for Hockley’s successor although Todd Greenberg, the current CEO of the Australia Cricketers’ Association, will likely be a frontrunner if he is interested in the job.

Perez willing to sell: Man City now in talks with "special" Real Madrid ace

As Real Madrid president Florentino Perez looks to make room for even more stars this summer, Manchester City could reportedly take full advantage by welcoming an attacking talent of their own.

Man City "a thousand million points behind Liverpool" – Guardiola

It was around this time last year that Manchester City were on their way to securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title before squaring off against Manchester United in the FA Cup final. On a Wembley outing which ultimately ended in defeat, Pep Guardiola’s side could have been forgiven for their title hangover which allowed United to take full advantage.

A year on, however, they will not be handed that same forgiveness if they fall to defeat against Crystal Palace this weekend. The Citizens are no longer champions. It’s Liverpool’s crown to lose these days. Instead, Guardiola has endured his most difficult season in the Manchester City dugout and is yet to secure Champions League qualification with just two games remaining.

Guardiola even went as far as to admit that victory in the FA Cup final would not suddenly turn City’s season into a success, telling reporters: “The damage would be minimum. It’s not going to confuse [that] the season has been good. The club has to take the decision, the right ones, so next season will be better.

“We are a thousand million points behind Liverpool. I said many times the season hasn’t been good because we define if the season is good or not with the Premier League. This season it could not happen, at the same time we tried to avoid the damage. We have to be calm now and recover.”

Perfect Reijnders alternative: Man City preparing bid for "magic" £60m star

Man City could well be ready to step up their interest in an alternative to Tijjani Reijnders

However, what such a difficult campaign has seemingly done is spark Manchester City into life in the transfer market. Already, names such as Florian Wirtz are threatening to steal the headlines and he could yet be joined by a Real Madrid star at The Etihad.

Man City in direct contact with Rodrygo

According to Sport in Spain, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester City are now in direct contact with Rodrygo over a summer move. The Real Madrid winger is someone that Perez is reportedly willing to sell for the right price, whilst the Brazilian himself has grown discontent with his role towards the end of Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure.

It’s not often that Madrid lose a Galactico, but as Rodrygo looks to become the main man, the Spaniards could do just that if Manchester City make their move in the coming months.

With 13 goals and 10 assists to his name this season, the Brazilian winger has impressed once again under Ancelotti, who has been a fan of his for some time despite the winger’s reported discontent.

The Real Madrid boss told reporters in 2022: “Both Valverde and Rodrygo are special players. And that’s what modern-day footballers have to be. They can play in different positions and they possess both technical and physical attributes.”

Chelsea hold talks with Ajax chief as BlueCo step up move to sign £42m star

Ahead of what could be another busy summer at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have now reportedly held direct talks with one European club chief over signing a £42m defender.

Chelsea making summer transfer plans

As ever, the Blues will be ones to watch this summer. Even as their Champions League qualification remains unconfirmed, those at Stamford Bridge are likely to be in a position to splash the cash in an attempt to finally put a side together capable of taking Chelsea back into the Premier League title picture.

With the summer transfer window fast-approaching too, the rumours have already been coming thick and fast. Names such as Ollie Watkins and Dean Huijsen have particularly been mentioned among the headlines in recent weeks and there’s no denying that both would hand Enzo Maresca key upgrades at opposite ends of his strongest side.

Watkins would be a particularly interesting arrival thanks to his place at Aston Villa – a direct rival for Champions League qualification. A proven goalscorer in the Premier League, the England international could finally be the answer to the Blues’ striker problems if he decides to swap the Midlands for the London club this summer.

In pursuit of a rival star, to say that Champions League qualification would go a long way towards luring such players to Stamford Bridge would be a major understatement – especially if it means that Aston Villa miss out on a place.

Whilst it’s easy for the Blues to get ahead of themselves, however, Maresca chose to remain fairly grounded when quizzed on the frantic top five battle – telling reporters: “The mood is good and I’ve said for a few weeks now that it’s a matter of how we manage emotions until the end [of the season],’ the Blues head coach explained.

Talks now set to intensify as Chelsea prepare £17m bid to sign "pacy" gem

They’ve set their sights on another young talent.

ByTom Cunningham May 3, 2025

“When we win games, we are happy and when we don’t win, we’re not happy. But it’ll be a race until the end and we need to manage the emotions. In this moment, the main thing is to watch ourselves and be focused on ourselves. This is the main point. For sure, there are more clubs involved [in the top-five race] but for us, it’s important to stay focused on ourselves.”

Chelsea step up move to sign Hato

Away from the action on the pitch, meanwhile, BlueCo have reportedly been busy. According to Dutch journalist Mike Verweij on De Telegraaf’s Kick Off podcast, Chelsea have now held direct talks with Ajax chief Alex Kroes over signing Jorrel Hato this summer.

The teenage full-back has enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Netherlands and BlueCo are now reportedly set to step up their chase for his signature in a deal worth £42m this summer. Adding competition for Marc Cucurella in the process, Hato would go a long way towards handing Maresca a complete squad.

Praised for an “excellent” season by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Hato looks likely to be one to watch as Chelsea push to welcome yet another young talent this summer.

Crystal Palace eyeing move for "sensational" £20m maestro; Glasner's a fan

Crystal Palace are now eyeing a move for a “sensational” midfielder, but there could be competition for his signature from a number of their Premier League rivals, according to a report.

Palace keen on a midfielder amid Wharton uncertainty

Had Palace made a better start to the campaign, they could be major contenders for the Europa League this season, although they still have an outside chance of pushing for the European places, given their fantastic form over the past few weeks.

The Eagles are undefeated since February in the Premier League, picking up some impressive victories over the likes of Aston Villa and rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, so it is little wonder some of their key figures are starting to attract attention.

One such player is midfielder Adam Wharton, who has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, and should the 21-year-old leave this summer, Oliver Glasner will be tasked with bringing in a replacement.

Crystal Palace battling to sign "amazing" 26-goal ace who may replace Eze

He’s enjoyed an excellent season…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 5, 2025

SC Freiburg’s Martin Rohl is one option for the south Londoners, having emerged as shock contenders for the 22-year-old, alongside Liverpool and Newcastle United, with the German potentially set to be available for £21m.

There is a clear focus on bringing in talented young players at Selhurst Park, and a report from Caught Offside has now revealed Crystal Palace are eyeing a summer move for Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham.

However, a whole host of top Premier League clubs are also in the race for the 19-year-old, with Chelsea currently showing the strongest interest, so it may be a tough ask for the Eagles to win the race for his signature.

Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund headline the interest from abroad, and a move to the latter club could appeal, given his older brother’s impressive stint at Signal Iduna Park, which earned him a move to Real Madrid.

"Sensational" Bellingham would be exciting addition for Palace

It remains to be seen whether the 19-year-old can go on to achieve what his brother Jude has in the game, but he has certainly been showing promising signs at Sunderland in the Championship.

The Black Cats are vying for promotion this season, and the teenager, who is thought to be valued at £20m, has been one of their key players, picking up four goals and three assists in 36 league games.

Not only that, but the young midfielder has caught the eye of journalist Josh Bunting, who previously lauded him as “sensational”, and his performances this season indicate he is now ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

It could be very difficult for Palace to win the race for Bellingham, particularly if European football is not on offer next season, but it would certainly appease Glasner if they secure a deal, given that the manager wanted the youngster last summer, indicating he is a fan.

Dean Elgar anchors Essex as Hampshire's challenge fades

Ben Allison claims three wickets as Pepper, Cox aid 167-run chase

ECB Reporters Network20-Jun-2024Essex 170 for 2 (Elgar 60*, Pepper 44, Cox 41*) beat Hampshire 166 for 7 (Weatherley 48, Fuller 39*, Allison 3-39) by eight wickets Dean Elgar showed off all his variations with his third fifty of the Vitality Blast to give Essex a comfortable fourth victory of the competition.South African Elgar never looked fussed in chasing 167, as his 60 not out made in conjunction with the swashbuckling of Adam Rossington’s quick-fire 18, Michael Pepper’s swaggering 44 off 24 and Jordan Cox’s slow-burning unbeaten 41.Hampshire had been dragged a middling score by a late James Fuller flurry of 39 off 16, after Joe Weatherley had stoically struck 48, but as was the case in last year’s rain-affected semi-final, it wasn’t enough. After losing James Vince and Ben McDermott within three balls of each other in identical swings to deep square, the Hawks seemed to tempo their innings towards a 160 total having been stuck in.Weatherley and T20 debutant Fletcha Middleton ticked the runs along but never appeared in too much rush during a 47-run alliance. One reason for Hampshire’s tardiness either side of the powerplay was the dead-eye accurate spell from Simon Harmer – who on his 100th T20 appearance for Essex didn’t concede a boundary in his four overs. The regular wicket-taking came from others though, with Paul Walter strangling Middleton down the legside to end that partnership, and Matt Critchley stopping Toby Albert and Benny Howell from getting going.Weatherley only scored four boundaries in his 48 but never looked bogged down. He was only denied a half-century when a straight drive smashed the non-striker’s stumps and he was lbw to Ben Allison next ball – Allison ended up with three for 44.At 117 for six with 20 balls to go, it looked like Hampshire had undercooked their scoring – but Fuller entered to blast some crucial death over runs.He played the biggest hand in the final three overs going for 14, 13 and 17 runs – with five six included and the total now looking closer to par.Hampshire had an all-pace attack – with Liam Dawson ill and missing a Hawks T20 after 43 straight appearances – and learned the lesson of the faster you bowl, the further it goes.Adam Rossington started to prove that theory by pumping Michael Neser for six, six, four before the Australian took the pace off and found Rossington chipping to mid-off.Elgar had already swatted Chris Wood straight back over his head for six and took the quick run-scoring lead with his elegant risk-free hitting. His fifty off 34 balls relied more on the meaty middle of his bat than extravagant or inventive shots, with Pepper more than matching his rate.Pepper strode past 250 runs in this season’s Blast – surviving a drop on three – before his 80-run stand, off 47 balls, with Elgar was ended when he swished to long on.Cox showed no interest in the six-hitting of his predecessors to make sure no collapse was forthcoming to put on an unbroken 59 with the ever-nonplussed Elgar. He did open up with the winning post in sight with a couple of sixes off John Turner, as victory was secured with 20 balls to spare – with Cox classically driving to the boundary for an eight-wicket win.

Leeds star who lost possession 15x had a game to forget vs Swansea

A horrible sense of déjà vu is beginning to creep into proceedings at Elland Road as another spectacular promotion collapse might well be on the cards for Leeds United.

Last campaign, Daniel Farke’s Whites found themselves in and around the automatic promotion positions for the majority of the hectic season, only for the lottery of the Championship playoffs to slap them in the face come May.

Giving up a last-gasp equaliser to Swansea City on Saturday means Leeds sit precariously in second spot on goal difference, as Illan Meslier’s wobbly demeanour in between the sticks let down the West Yorkshire outfit once more.

Meslier's performance vs Swansea

The Frenchman, despite keeping a bumper 21 clean sheets in league action this season, has an error in his game waiting to come to the forefront – with three errors leading to goals and one own goal.

This time around versus Alan Sheehan’s visitors, the ex-Lorient shot-stopper added to his growing catalogue of howlers when he inexplicably dropped the ball after a corner was initially dealt with into the path of Harry Darling to fire home.

The error-prone number one was originally deemed a hero before this moment of madness, with this penalty save early on boosting Leeds’ confidence and Meslier’s, but yet another unfortunate mishap helped Swansea return back to Wales with a share of the points.

Of course, the stopper wasn’t the only notable underperformer as Leeds failed to win, with this defender in front of the shaky 25-year-old also struggling at points against one of his former employers.

Joe Rodon

The Leeds defender who was as bad as Meslier

A number of Farke’s trusted first-team personnel looked ropey coming up against the Swans, with Ethan Ampadu looking notably lethargic in the middle of the park, resulting in his manager hooking him off before the hour mark.

Ampadu’s fellow Welsh compatriot Joe Rodon was also way off his best, with the Swansea-born centre-back giving up that first-half penalty when he rashly clattered into ex-Leeds target Lewis O’Brien.

Away from handing Swansea a golden opportunity via a spot-kick, Rodon was also uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball at his feet with possession squandered a costly 15 times during his 90 minutes on the Elland Road turf, on top of 14 of his 76 passes going astray.

Moreover, it wasn’t the most convincing display defensively either in terms of rolling his sleeves up with zero blocked shots or interceptions registered, away from valiantly managing to win six duels, and it was an afternoon to forget for the former Spurs man.

This out-of-sorts showing is unlikely to result in Rodon being dropped from Farke’s XI altogether, considering the Whites number five has started all of his team’s second tier games this season so far, but the Welshman will know any more leaky displays of this manner could cost his high-flying side dear in the automatic promotion battle.

Despite his team slipping up on their own patch, Farke defiantly declared after the 2-2 draw that his side are still 100% on for a return to the Premier League, with Whites fans desperately hoping that the German’s bold words come true.

On this viewing, however, Burnley and Sheffield United will feel confident they can upset the apple cart in West Yorkshire, with Meslier and Co needing to be more robust ahead of some crunch contests to come in the enthralling Championship.
