THE BIGGER PICTURE
Kane and Dier spent nine seasons at Tottenham Hotspur before the former was signed by the Bundesliga champions in 2023. The defender soon reunited with his buddy at the Allianz Arena in January 2024, initially arriving on loan. Although the club made the signing permanent last summer, Dier struggled to break into head coach Vincent Kompany's starting XI. Despite being offered a new contract, Dier decided to leave Bavaria as a free agent this summer, joining French heavyweights Monaco on a three-year deal.
WHAT ERIC DIER SAID
Dier posted a series of photos on Instagram, reflecting upon his journey at Bayern Munich. He wrote: "Became a father here, became a champion here. Danke für alles @fcbayern und München.
Wish the team all the best today for the start of the Club World Cup!"

WHAT NEXT?
Kompany's troops will kick off their Club World Cup campaign on Sunday against New Zealand's Auckland City. Dier, meanwhile, will enjoy his vacation before linking up with his new team-mates in Ligue 1 next month for pre-season.
As batsman, coach, and the man who snagged MS Dhoni for CSK, VB Chandrasekhar possessed both daring and clear thinking
Deivarayan Muthu and Saurabh Somani16-Aug-2019VB Chandrasekhar may have hit a 56-ball fourth-innings century in the 1988 Irani Trophy against Rest of India, to go with 160 in the quarter-final and 89 in the final of the Ranji Trophy that preceded it, but he might be remembered more for what he did in a spellbound auction room ahead of the inaugural IPL almost three decades later. It was Chandrasekhar who raised the paddle to signify that Chennai Super Kings were bidding USD 1.5 million for MS Dhoni. That was 30% of the budget cap on one player, and the size of the bid meant Dhoni got a higher pay packet than even the five ‘icon’ players (Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh), who would each be paid 15% more than whatever their respective franchises’ highest bids were. And if it is for that one act that people remember the former India batsman who died on August 15, six days before he would have turned 58, it will still be fitting. The otherwise straightforward act had the daring and audacity of his strokeplay, the foresight of his time as national selector, the ability to spot talent that he had as coach.Described as a witty, jovial character who was an excellent reader of the game, Chandrasekhar had become a familiar figure in his later years as a commentator on domestic cricket and an owner of one of the teams in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. His career as player, selector and coach meant he had a bird’s-eye view of the game as well as an insider’s perspective, and the cricketing community in India recalled his contribution to the game with fondness.”I am shocked and completely taken aback,” R Ashwin told ESPNcricinfo in a text message. “He was a man who garnered respect wherever he went in the cricketing fraternity, had a great eye for talent and his service to game is beyond my limits of expression.”VV Kumar, who played two Tests for India and had a first-class career spanning 1955-56 to 1976-77, was Chandrasekhar’s neighbour and had seen his progress from close quarters. “I knew him for more than 30 years,” Kumar said. “He had that cricketing brain to judge a player, whether he is good enough or whether he could be tried in a different role and turned into a better cricketer. He had that great temperament, both as a batsman and a selector.
“He had that cricketing brain to judge a player, whether he is good enough or whether he could be tried in a different role and turned into a better cricketer”VV Kumar, the former India legspinner
“After [former India opener] Kris Srikkanth, the only batsman from Tamil Nadu who could hit any bowler – pacer or spinner – was Chandrasekhar. If you go deeper, Srikkanth might give a chance to a bowler, but Chandrasekhar never gave the bowler a chance to settle down. He had that capacity to hit any bowler, but unfortunately did not get enough chances for India.”The special thing about VB’s hitting was that he could pick the length half-a-second earlier than the others. Even if you changed lengths, (he would jump down the track and hit you). Even if a coach or a captain would tell VB not to hit in the air, he would not listen and back himself to hit over the top.”He also had a great eye for talent. Suresh Raina wasn’t a T20 star, but VB picked him [for CSK] and he still continues to play for them. And Dhoni, of course.”Kiran More, who was Chandrasekhar’s India team-mate and later served on the same selection panel from 2004 to 2006 – a fairly tumultuous time in Indian cricket with Sourav Ganguly sacked as captain and Greg Chappell’s stormy tenure as coach – had memories of a player who trained hard and a selector whose opinions were well worth paying heed to.”There’s a beautiful ground [in New Zealand], the New Plymouth Ground. There’s a hill on that ground and we named it ‘VB hill’. Because what happened is, Bishan [Singh Bedi, the Indian team manager then] made him run every day, with pads on, up and down the hill. He would do it at least seven to eight times during the day.Getty Images”When the match [a four-day game against New Zealand Board President’s XI] happened, VB got out for a duck [he actually made 92 in the first innings, but 3 in the second]. And from the ground itself he went straight up on the hill, and didn’t come down till the evening! So we called it the VB Hill. He went straight from the ground, with the pads on. Pads, gloves, helmet, he went up.”More said that as a selector, Chandrasekhar was clear-thinking and candid. “VB would always give his opinions. He knew his own mind and we respected that,” More said. “He definitely had his opinions, and he would share them too, but a very good cricketing brain. We used to get along really well together as selectors. We would argue in the selection meetings, but at the end of the day, we were all great friends.”He had his own style of talking. Always jovial, and he would drop these cricketing anecdotes from time to time. Sometimes I would find that he would just get lost in his own world. If something went wrong he wouldn’t like it and would just go into his own world, in his own zone. That’s why I used to tell him, ‘VB, you’ve not come down from that hill!'”
He went past Sunil Gavaskar and MS Dhoni to take the record
Shiva Jayaraman26-Jan-2018Kohli scores tough runs
On a pitch that was extremely difficult to bat on for most of the day – and misbehaved enough to trigger an official discussion on whether it was safe enough to continue playing on – Virat Kohli made 41 runs from 79 deliveries to help India along to a total that gave them the chance to score an elusive away win and only their third Test win in South Africa. During the course of the innings he went past MS Dhoni and Sunil Gavaskar to become India’s highest scoring Test captain. He has made 3456 runs at 65.20 in Tests while leading India.Early in his innings, Kohli was hit on the thumb while playing forward to a ball that climbed off a length from Kagiso Rabada. However, that didn’t stop the India captain from getting on to the front during the course of the rest of his stay at the crease: off the rest of the 40 balls that were bowled at him on full or good lengths, Kohli played forward to at least 17 balls. Kohli made 27 runs off 47 balls off those lengths at a strike rate of 57.44. On a pitch that troubled the batsmen with unpredictable bounce off full and good lengths, Kohli batted well to return a control percentage of 72.34% off those lengths.Kohli’s tally of 95 runs in this Test took his aggregate for the series to 286 runs – the second-most scored by an India batsman in a series in South Africa. No India captain has made as many runs as Kohli has in this series. Before Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar’s 241 runs in three matches in 1996-97 were the highest by an India captain in a series in South Africa. Rahane makes it look easy
Sat out of the first two Tests of the series, Rahane came in to bat with India 93 runs ahead. He looked the most comfortable batsman on the third day, scoring rapidly off lengths that were troubling batsmen at the other end. Rahane faced 33 deliveries pitched on full and good lengths, and was in control of his shots a whopping 90.00% of the time – easily the best control shown by any of the India batsmen.

Bhuvneshwar contributes with the bat again
Bhuvneshwar Kumar added 33 runs to his crucial contribution of 30 runs in the first innings making him only the second India batsman in this match to get 30 or more runs in both innings. In a series in which batsmen have struggled to put together meaningful partnerships, his 55-run stand with Rahane in India’s second innings was the second time he added 50 or more runs with a partner in these Tests. Out of the six fifty-plus stands India have had in the series, only Kohli has been involved in more such stands. In fact, Bhuvneshwar has faced more balls per dismissal in this series than any other India batsman. In four innings that he has batted, Bhuvneshwar has faced 252 balls, getting dismissed three times.

Turning their attention towards incomings after finally reaching a breakthrough in negotiations with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool are now reportedly in pole position to sign a midfield star.
Liverpool turn focus towards incomings
It’s been a long time coming and it hasn’t been without some nervous moments, but it looks as though Van Dijk and Salah are finally set to sign new Liverpool deals to end what were growing fears around Anfield. All of a sudden, the headlines threatening to overshadow the Reds’ march towards the Premier League title look destined to clear just in time.
The news should signal a sigh of relief around Anfield and allow the likes of Richard Hughes to turn their attention towards any potential incomings this summer.
It may still be a busy window for the Reds too. As impressive as Arne Slot’s side have been this season, there’s still plenty of room for improvement as proved in Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Fulham last time out.
Their frontline will particularly be interesting to watch in the coming months. It’s been arguably the main point of weakness at Liverpool when it hasn’t been Salah stealing the spotlight and those struggles could result in at least one fresh face to lead the line.
Liverpool in new talks to sign £40m top target who's keen on Man Utd move
The Reds have made him a top target.
ByCharlie Smith Apr 10, 2025
On that front, names such as Hugo Ekitike and Newcastle United star Alexander Isak have already been mentioned in recent headlines in two deals that would undoubtedly improve Slot’s attack. It’s not just in attack that the Reds could improve though, with one midfield target now reportedly emerging.
Liverpool in pole position to sign Nicolo Barella
After missing out on Martin Zubimendi last summer, Slot solved his problems by transforming Ryan Gravenberch into one of the most talented No.6s that the Premier League has to offer. But recent weeks have highlighted why the Reds need to add further depth in the middle of the park rather than falling back on a fatigued trio. And that’s where one star could come in.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Sports Witness, Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Nicolo Barella from Inter Milan this summer in a deal that would cost around €100m (£87m).
If there was any remaining doubt over Barella’s ability, then that should have been put to bed against Bayern Munich in Inter Milan’s Champions League quarter-final first leg tie. The Italian dominated the German giants as Inter soared to a shock 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena.
According to Fotmob, Barella ended a fine evening with a 92% pass accuracy, five recoveries, five successful passes into the final third and was dispossessed just once. At the opposite end, meanwhile, Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich managed just three defensive actions, whilst Goretzka failed to complete a single tackle.
Australia seamer available for newly promoted club until end of July
ESPNcricinfo staff19-Oct-2023Scott Boland will join newly promoted Durham for the 2024 County Championship and T20 Blast.Boland, the 34-year-old Australia seamer, is available for the club until the end of July, meaning he can play the first half of the Championship season as well as Blast fixtures.Boland enjoyed a memorable Test debut during the 2021-22 Ashes, returning figures of 6 for 7 as he ripped through England’s line-up in the space of just 21 balls on his home ground in Melbourne. He went on to bag 18 wickets for the series and has now played 10 Tests, claiming 35 wickets in all – including five during Australia’s 209-run victory over India in the 2023 World Test Championship final. He has also played 14 ODIs and three T20Is.He has amassed 349 first-class wickets with a best of 7 for 31 powering Victoria to a Sheffield Shield win over Western Australia in 2015. Boland is part of the Melbourne Stars team in the Big Bash League and has 75 wickets in T20s.”I’m very excited to be joining Durham for the upcoming season,” Boland said. “After achieving promotion in 2023 I’m keen to add my skills to an already strong squad and help Durham contend for the Championship in Division 1.”I’m eager to join a strong bowling group and work alongside some new faces. I feel the time is right for me to play county cricket, I’ve always wanted to and am grateful for Durham for giving me the opportunity.”Durham were the runaway Division Two leaders in this year’s Championship, securing promotion seven years after they were relegated from the top flight over financial issues.Marcus North, Durham’s Australian director of cricket, said: “Scott is a huge signing for us as we look to challenge in Division 1 next season. A proven International quick bowler was something we identified to further strengthen our fast-bowling group. Scott is someone who we have been talking to for some time and to have secured the signature of one of the best international bowlers outside of the T20 World Cup shows Durham Cricket’s intent moving into 2024.”
Arsenal are now preparing to offer a huge contract to a “phenomenal” player, and they are confident that an agreement can be reached, according to a report.
Ian Wright concerned about Arsenal contract situations
Ian Wright has recently expressed his concern over whether the Gunners will be able to tie down Bukayo Saka, Gabriel and William Saliba to new deals, saying: “When you’re talking about renewals with certain players, Saka, Gabriel [Magalhaes], Saliba, the way they’re moving now, I bet those renewals are all going to be slow.
“We’re going to have a situation maybe like Liverpool with Trent, Salah and Virgil.
“If I’m one of these players, and their teams are going to be saying, ‘Let’s wait and see, we’ve got two years left so let’s wait and see who they get in the summer.”

All three players are currently on deals lasting until 2027, meaning there is no reason to panic just yet, but a new report has suggested the north Londoners are currently in the process of preparing a new contract offer.
According to The Boot Room, Arsenal are now readying a huge offer to secure Saliba’s long-term future, which includes a pay rise to make him one of the highest earners at the club at around £250,000-per-week, an increase on his £190,000-per-week currently.
Having formed a fantastic partnership with Gabriel, Mikel Arteta is keen to keep hold of the Frenchman, and action is being taken to ward off interest from Real Madrid.
Arsenal's WilliamSalibaapplauds fans after the match
Madrid were also linked with a move for the defender during the January transfer window, at which point the Gunners were said to be demanding a fee of at least €120m (£99m), a fee that reflects his importance to the team.
Despite the interest from Madrid, Arsenal are confident that an agreement can be reached, with talks set to be opened in the coming months, and they hope a deal can be struck before the beginning of the 2025-26 campaign.
"Phenomenal" Saliba crucial to Arteta's project
It is promising news that Arsenal believe they can convince the France international to stay, as he has been fantastic ever since his arrival at the Emirates Stadium, receiving the Man of the Match award and high praise from Arteta after his debut.
Since then, the 23-year-old has established himself as a key player for the Gunners, making 25 Premier League appearances this season, and given his age, he will be of great importance to Arteta going forward.
If Arsenal have aspirations of winning the Premier League title in the future, it is imperative that Saliba remains at the Emirates Stadium, alongside Saka and Gabriel, and all three players have proven they deserve to be rewarded with big contracts, given their performances this season.

Allrounders Wessly Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta have been suspended with immediate effect by Zimbabwe Cricket for “allegedly breaching anti-doping rules”. Madhevere played all three T20Is while Mavuta played just the third T20I and the three ODIs after that.Mavuta made his international debut in 2018, and has so far played four Tests, 12 ODIs and 10 T20Is, while Madhevere, who first represented Zimbabwe in 2020, has featured in two Tests, 36 ODIs and 60 T20Is.While Mavuta didn’t play any competitive cricket after the Ireland series, Madhevere featured for Mashonaland Eagles in the ongoing Logan Cup, Zimbabwe’s first-class competition, to score 4 and bag 2 for 34.Madhevere’s and Mavuta’s suspensions come a day after Zimbabwe’s head coach Dave Houghton resigned from his post, as they failed to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup after also missing out on the 2023 ODI World Cup.
