Approved by Slot: Liverpool want to sign "electric" attacker for under £45m

da premier bet: Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has claimed that Liverpool want to sign an "electric" attacking player for under £45m this summer, with Arne Slot keen on the move.

Liverpool manager & transfer news

da betsul: Slot has now officially been confirmed as the Reds' next manager, with the Dutchman set to officially take over from Jurgen Klopp on June 1st. The 45-year-old will arrive from Feyenoord, having won the Eredivisie title with his side last season, not to mention scooping Dutch Cup glory this time around.

Sad as it is to see Klopp depart, it promises to be an exciting new era at Anfield, as Slot looks to do the impossible and shine just as much as the man he is replacing. For that to happen, new signings will be required in the summer transfer window, and Liverpool haven't been without rumoured targets of late.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp bows out

Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Odilon Kossounou has been linked with a summer move to Anfield, having helped his side cruise to a Bundesliga title win in 2023/24. The 23-year-old started 21 matches in the competition, and the Reds are seen as the current favourites to snap him up, with Benfica defender Antonio Silva on their radar, too, as they potentially sign him ahead of rivals Manchester United.

Athletic Bilbao youngster Nico Williams is considered another target at the opposite end of the pitch, although Barcelona are also believed to be providing stiff competition for his signature.

Liverpool want to sign "electric" attacking ace

Taking to X, Tavolieri talked up Liverpool's interest in PSV Eindhoven star Johan Bakayoko, with the winger available for under €50m (£42.7m) this summer. A deal has also been "validated" by Slot.

Bakayoko has been seen as a target for Liverpool for some time now, and it does feel as though he could be viewed as the long-term successor to Mohamed Salah on the right-hand side.

The Egyptian legend has seemingly committed his future to the Reds, posting a bullish message on social media in which he promised to "fight like hell" to win trophies again next season, but he will need to be replaced eventually.

Bakayoko has impressed again for PSV this season, scoring 12 goals and registering nine assists in the Eredivisie, and at just 21, there is still so much more maturing to do as an all-round player. He has been hailed as "electric" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and the fact that Slot personally wants him to come in and be one of his first signings as Liverpool manager can only bode well.

Slot could turn "outrageous" Liverpool star into his own Phil Foden

This high-flying Anfield player is starting to shape into an irreplaceable member.

ByAngus Sinclair May 21, 2024

The price tag is also appealing, certainly compared to someone like Crystal Palace maestro Michael Olise in a similar role, so the Reds could look to strike a deal.

Covid-19: Six Warriors players withdrawn from opening round

South African cricket resumed after almost seven months of inaction due to the coronavirus pandemic but Covid-19 has made its effects felt immediately. The Eastern-Cape based Warriors had to withdraw six members of their squad from their opening fixture against the Knights at the Mangaung Oval, after two players tested positive and four others were in direct contact with them. The players were tested last Thursday, before the Warriors squad traveled to Bloemfontein, and no other players came into contact with the six.As a result, the Warriors have had to apply to CSA for an exemption because they have missed the transformation target for this round. The Warriors had to take the field against the Knights with only five players of colour, including two black Africans, instead of the stipulated six players of colour, including three black Africans. They have asked the body to be lenient in exceptional circumstances. However, they were shown none of the same by the Knights’ opening batsmen, who put the Warriors attack to the sword. Jacques Snyman became the first batsman in decade to score a century before lunch in a franchise four-day game – a feat last achieved by Rilee Rossouw in 2010 – and was eventually run out for 109. Snyman shared a 164-run opening stand with Matthew Kleinveldt, who was dismissed for 73.

Ellyse Perry ruled out of the remainder of World Cup with hamstring injury

Allrounder was injured while fielding against New Zealand and will miss the remainder of the tournament as well as Australia’s upcoming tour of South Africa

Alex Malcolm02-Mar-2020Australia’s star allrounder Ellyse Perry has been ruled out of the remainder of the T20 World Cup after suffering a high-grade right hamstring injury while fielding during the win over New Zealand at Junction Oval.Perry fielded a ball at mid-off and threw in one motion, off-balance, trying to run out New Zealand captain Sophie Devine. She immediately crumpled to the ground clutching her right hamstring, and hobbled off with a significant limp and a concerned look on her face. She did not field for the remainder of the match.Perry had a scan in Melbourne on Monday night which revealed a high-grade tear that will not only rule her out of the rest of the tournament but also out of Australia’s upcoming tour of South Africa which follows the T20 World Cup.Australia won’t name a replacement in their 15-player squad.”Ellyse sustained a high-grade right hamstring injury that is expected to keep her out of the game for a significant period of time,” Australian team Doctor Pip Inge said. “We are currently exploring management options and will continue to support Ellyse through her recovery.”Australia coach Matthew Mott said the news was disappointing for both Perry and the team but he was confident the squad could cover her loss.”Ellyse is a key member of our squad and has been for a long period of time and on a personal level we’re disappointed that she won’t have the opportunity to finish the tournament,” Mott said. “She gives her absolute all every time she takes to the field for her country and that was evident again against New Zealand in the selfless manner in which she threw herself into her batting, bowling and fielding performances.”We’re confident that we have enough depth in the squad to cover her batting and bowling and know whoever gets an opportunity will make a strong contribution.”Perry came into the New Zealand game in doubt due to a hip complaint that restricted her training in the build-up and had to pass a fitness test on the morning of the game to be cleared to play.Perry made 21 from 15 with the bat but was not running with her usual fluency during the innings and was kept away from outfield duties in the field. She is normally posted at deep midwicket as one of Australia’s best fielders but spent the first 11 overs fielding in the ring, predominantly at mid-off.Perry’s absence will leave a huge hole in the Australian line-up given she is the No. 1 allrounder in the world alongside Devine. Her absence was felt even in the win over New Zealand as Ash Gardner was required to fill her last two overs. Gardner conceded 26 runs including 15 off the last over when New Zealand needed 20 to win. However, Australia captain Meg Lanning was adamant Australia had enough depth in the squad could to cover Perry’s absence. “She’s obviously been a massive part of our squad and our team for a long time,” Lanning said after the match on Monday. “You can’t replace her but we’ve got 15 players here who can do a job and you need a squad to win a World Cup. You can’t rely on one or two players and the same XI each game. We’re going to have to use the depth that we’ve got and we’ve said we’ve got a lot of depth. I believe that and we’re just going to have to use it and that’s just the reality of it.””Unfortunately, in elite sport you get injuries. Unfortunately, Ellyse has got an injury. I’ve got full confidence that any player who comes in can play a role and we’re just going to have to get through it and play maybe slightly differently but that’s fine. You’ve got to adapt.”As far as Devine, the New Zealand captain, was concerned, it would be a shame if Perry couldn’t get back on the field for the remainder of Australia’s engagements, though she said she was certain Perry would play against New Zealand, injury or not.”Anyone going down at any point in a world event is really hard to see. Especially someone like Ellyse,” she said. “We know what she brings to the women’s game and I know people were saying she might not play this game but I didn’t have any doubts that she was going to play.”She would have to have her leg amputated for her not to take the field and it looked like she nearly did snap her leg off. I really hope she has a speedy recovery, whatever injury she has sustained. It is a real blow for the women’s game. I know it definitely will be for Australia but the world loses out on a great player.”

Derby in talks to sign dream Michael Smith alternative before deadline

It's been no secret this transfer window that Derby County have been chasing the services of Michael Smith, the Rams rumour mill dominated by constant conversation over whether or not the Sheffield Wednesday talisman will finally relocate to Paul Warne's side.

With that move looking rather dead in the water now, the Rams have been forced to look elsewhere to bolster their attacking spots – the League One automatic promotion candidates in even more need of added reinforcements up top now owing to Tyreece John-Jules' serious injury knock.

Warne hasn't gone majorly left-field when looking at other targets away from Smith, however, with the former Rotherham United boss still going after a Wednesday player in this potential incoming.

Derby going after League One promotion winner

According to the Sheffield Star, Derby are now looking at a second Owls striker in the form of Lee Gregory on a loan deal until the end of the season. It's stated talks have already taken place between the respective parties.

The report does further state that both Smith and Gregory wouldn't come to Pride Park hand-in-hand though, with the third tier side facing similar hurdles this time around to land Gregory that kept tripping the Owls up in their pursuit of Smith – financial restraints getting in their way yet again.

If Wednesday could pull off a dramatic deal for Gregory, this last-gasp transfer could well prove to be the perfect Smith alternative with the 35-year-old attacker also previously prolific in League One.

How Gregory fits into the Derby team

With Warne having to play Nathaniel Mendez-Laing in a number ten spot last match against Cheltenham Town to make up for John-Jules' absence, signing a new striker recruit in Gregory could see the Rams manager go back-to-basics with a switch to a 4-4-2 formation to slot the current Owls man in alongside James Collins.

The deal would even see Gregory return to Pride Park after a short but sweet loan stint back in 2021, bagging three goals in 11 games.

Collins and Gregory could well combine to devastating effect in a strike partnership together if the 35-year-old returns to Derby, Gregory always hitting double figures whenever he's played a full season in the third tier with five strikes from 11 games in the lottery of the League One playoffs also showcasing his deadly knack of scoring when it matters.

It's why former Millwall teammate Tom Bradshaw described the potent centre-forward as "instrumental" to his own development as a clinical goalscorer, the Lions striker at the time modelling his own game on Gregory's craft.

The 35-year-old even netted Wednesday's first goal of their somewhat topsy-turvy Championship campaign to date, the EFL veteran almost effortless in his approach to finding the back of the net.

Not being able to secure a deal for Smith would have stung, especially with Warne's close connection to the ex-Millers man, but any annoyance over that transfer falling flat would be swept to one side if the Rams could land this alternative target before the close of the window tomorrow.

Matt Renshaw has been dropped from the Queensland squad for the resumption of the Sheffield Shield against Tasmania.Renshaw, who has played 10 Tests for Australia and was back among the squad last season for the series against Sri Lanka before being overlooked, made just 182 runs in 10 innings in the first part of the Shield.Overall he has gone 31 Sheffield Shield innings without a century dating back to March 2018 against Western Australia. However, during that time he scored three first-class hundreds for Somerset in the County Championship in the 2018 season which helped push him back into Test contention. However, while his first-class form has dipped he impressed during the Big Bash for the Brisbane Heat with 348 runs in a middle-order role.Renshaw made his Test debut against South Africa in 2016 and enjoyed strong early returns with a best of 184 against Pakistan in Sydney.Queensland will boast a strong top-order against Tasmania with Usman Khawaja, Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne available. Labuschagne is in the ODI squad for the tour of South Africa, but the T20Is come first on that trip which means he is able to squeeze in a Shield appearance.

'Yunus Musah has to start turning this around' – Tony Meola worried about USMNT midfielder's continued decline despite move to Atalanta BC

U.S. legend Tony Meola voiced concern over Yunus Musah’s recent form, calling it part of a troubling decline dating back to his final year at AC Milan. Meola urged the midfielder to change course, regain confidence and aim to develop on his potential. Musah struggled mightily in Atlanta's 4-0 defeat by PSG in a midweek Champions League match.

AFP'It was a tough test for Yunus Musah'

Meola acknowledged Musah getting his first start for La Dea against the European Champions isn't ideal, but also insisted his struggles aren't isolated to that match.

“It was a tough test for Yunus Musah,” Meola said on the Call it What You Want podcast. “When you talk about performances, I’m still more worried about Yunus Musah because this, for me, isn’t a one off. Remember, he was at Milan. I watched him all year, I watched him all season, and the play just continued to decline and decline.

“So this is, for me, like an extension of what happened last year. And I get worried because at some point, I want it to turn around. And I don’t know if we should be judging in this game, because as [co-host] Charlie [Davies] mentioned, [Fabian] Ruiz, Vitinha, [Joao] Neves. Like you’re dealing with a midfield that is the best midfield in the world, arguably…but I’m a little bit concerned that Yunus Musah has to start turning this around.”

AdvertisementAFPPraise for 'phenomenal' Weah

While Musah struggled in his Champions League debut for Atalanta, there was plenty of praise for Tim Weah's first Champions League match for Marseille.  Davies offered glowing praise for the winger's impressive showing for Marseille against Real Madrid in the Champions League, calling it one of the best performances of his career.

“Oh, [he was] phenomenal,” Davies said. “He absolutely torched the backline with his movement. He was running, and he was confident. The 1-v-1s, I was really impressed with his influence for Marseille. Remember, they signed Igor Paxiao. They have Mason Greenwood, and Igor Paxiao is just catching up. You have [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang there as well.

"So this is a talented Marseille team, and I think Weah proved that he’s got to be on the pitch. To do this against a Real Madrid side? Phenomenal! This was probably one of the best games I’ve seen from Timothy Weah in his career.”

Musah and Weah's Champions League journeys

Both players have some signature moments in the Champions League, arguably the best club competition in global football. Musah, 22, made his Champions League debut with AC Milan in September 2023 against Newcastle United and has since built steady experience, logging 13 total appearances in his career. While he has yet to register a goal or assist in the competition, the fact that he has now featured for two clubs in the competition showcases the value of his versatility to teams. Weah, who previously featured in Europe for Paris Saint-Germain and Lille, has made 13 total Champions League appearances and is on an upward trend in the competition, scoring in his last two games.

AFPBig matches ahead

Weah will likely feature in one of Marseille's biggest matches of the season when they host PSG in Le Classique. Musah will look to rebound when Atalanta take on Torino.
