Arteta and Edu keen on signing elite Ivan Toney alternative for Arsenal

Both manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu are apparently keen on signing an "elite" Ivan Toney striker alternative for Arsenal.

Arsenal want to bring in a new forward

As previously reported, the Gunners are keen on bringing in a new number nine this year, with Arteta said to have been considering whether to sign a striker alongside two new full-backs and a centre midfielder (Miguel Delaney).

However, both FFP limitations and a slightly limited budget mean Arsenal may have to compromise on a few of the aforementioned positions.

While Arsenal will have to weigh their next move carefully, the club's need for a proven goalscorer was arguably highlighted by a recent 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup, where Arsenal carved a lot of openings but couldn't quite capitalise.

"Because the ball didn’t go in the net," said Arteta on why Arsenal couldn't score against Liverpool.

"We didn’t take the chances, I haven’t seen any other team in the first six months that have generated what we have done against them in the last two games and we’re not capitalising – not today, in the last few games – that’s why we are not winning games. Performance-wise, merit-wise, there is no question, but to win the game actually the results say something very different. When my team plays with that attitude, with that courage, with that desire and do what they’ve done to probably the best team in Europe at the moment in terms of momentum, what can I do? Stay behind them and support them."

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

In the last few months, Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Brentford star Toney, but Bees manager Thomas Frank is under the impression he's set to stay until the end of the season at least. Given Arteta arguably needs a striker, one alternative they could turn to this year is Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

Edu and Arteta keen on Isak

According to Football Transfers, both manager Arteta and Edu are keeping tabs on Isak, with Arsenal expressing a keen interest in signing who they describe as an "elite" striker.

They had attempted to bring him to the Emirates Stadium in 2022, but were unwilling to pay his release clause at the time which they deemed too high.

However, it is believed they may now "revisit" negotiations this year, with the £120,000-per-week Sweden international thought to be highly regarded by Arsenal's recruitment team.

Isak has scored nine goals in 15 league appearances for Newcastle so far this season, with Eddie Howe praising his ability on more than one occasion.

Leeds United now preparing offer to sign exciting gem Jack Hastings

Leeds United are now preparing an offer to sign a talented young star at Elland Road as Daniel Farke looks to the future, according to a new report.

Leeds United prepare for January transfers

Despite enjoying a commendable start to life in the Championship, Leeds fans will be keen for their side to strengthen in key positions once the market re-opens in mid-season for business.

On Boxing Day, a 2-1 defeat away to Preston North End in an ill-tempered affair has placed the Whites eight points behind Ipswich Town, who occupy second place in the division, making new arrivals potentially crucial to achieving their aspirations of automatic promotion.

Defence has been mooted as an area that the Whites could look to beef up under Farke and Fenerbache full-back Bright Osayi-Samuel is reportedly a target at Elland Road. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace are also believed to be keen on the Nigeria international, who is out of contract at the Turkish giants in the summer of 2025.

Capable of playing in a number of positions, the former Queens Park Rangers man would be a coup for the Yorkshire outfit; however, there is no specific fee mentioned in regard to the fee Leeds United may need to pay to acquire the 25-year-old.

Galatasaray forward Kerem Akturkoglu has been mentioned in connection with a move to the Whites; however, he is a potential recruit who would be deemed to be a little more on the ambitious side. Now, the Whites are believed to be readying a bid for an exciting young star who could potentially be one for the future at Elland Road, according to a report.

Leeds United prepare Jack Hastings offer

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are preparing an offer to sign Larne youngster Jack Hastings, who is also attracting interest from Crystal Palace, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Whites have previously monitored the 17-year-old who could now be at the centre of bids from elsewhere, with his current employers braced for approaches concerning the Northern Ireland Under-17 forward.

Hastings is capable of operating as a lone striker or as part of a front-two and has impressed at Under-18 and Under-20 level with his club, leading to his senior debut earlier this year in an Irish Cup tie.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Contact has previously been initiated between the two clubs regarding a potential swoop and the youngster could now move to Elland Road if all goes to plan with a formal bid. Unlikely to come in as a senior player, Hastings would likely head to Thorp Arch on arrival as he continues to develop as a player before potentially breaking through into the first-team later down the line.

Of course, Leeds United fans will want to see senior names come in once the window opens in January; however, bringing in prodigious talent is an important factor in the long-term sustainability of the club.

10

Neco Williams

£17m from Liverpool

Starting the countdown is attacking full-back Neco Williams, who arrived following Nottingham Forest’s promotion in 2022.

He left Liverpool after coming through the Reds’ academy and signed a new four-year contract at the City Ground in 2025.

9

Taiwo Awoniyi

£17.5m from Union Berlin

Taiwo Awoniyi was the player tasked with firing Nottingham Forest to safety following their return to the Premier League, and the Nigerian just done that to justify his £17.5m transfer from Union Berlin.

After that, though, Awoniyi fell down the pecking order at the City Ground, with Chris Wood becoming first choice.

8

Morgan Gibbs-White

£25m from Wolves

Morgan Gibbs-White has been Nottingham Forest’s standout performer following their return to the Premier League, and he nearly left in 2025 for Tottenham Hotspur.

Instead, the England international signed a new contract at the City Ground, and his initial £25m move from Wolves has proven to be a bargain.

7

Arnaud Kalimuendo

£26m from Rennes

Arnaud Kalimuendo scored 18 goals in 34 appearances for Rennes in 2024/25, something which caught the eye of Nottingham Forest in their search for another striker.

The Reds paid £26m to secure the Frenchman’s services, a fee which could be spread out over his five-year contract.

6

James McAtee

£30m from Man City

Another player to arrive in 2025 was James McAtee, with Nottingham Forest winning the race to sign the attacking midfielder from Manchester City.

McAtee was a wanted man across Europe and ended up costing Forest £30m, signing a five-year deal on £40,000-a-week.

5

Ibrahim Sangare

£30m from PSV

Ibrahim Sangare became Nottingham Forest’s record signing on deadline day in 2023, with those at the City Ground paying £30m to Dutch giants PSV.

Things haven’t exactly go to plan for Sangare, though, who has had his injury issues in the Midlands.

4

Dilane Bakwa

£30.5m from Strasbourg

A deadline day addition in September 2025 was winger Dilane Bakwa, who put pen to paper on a City Ground contract just before the window closed in a deal worth just over £30m.

After impressing for Strasbourg, Bakwa, a left-footed right-winger, signed a contract until 2030.

3

Dan Ndoye

£34m from Bologna

After qualifying for the Europa League, Dan Ndoye was Nottingham Forest’s first marquee signing in the summer of 2025, costing £34m from Serie A side Bologna.

A Switzerland international, Ndoye can play on either wing and is under contract until 2030.

2

Elliot Anderson

£35m from Newcastle

Elliot Anderson’s transfer from Newcastle went down as a £35m fee, and even if it was that, it has proven to be a great piece of business.

However, Forest and the Magpies made a deal at the same time which saw Odysseas Vlachodimos move to St James’ Park for £20m, so really, Anderson set them back just £15m.

1

Omari Hutchinson

£37.5m from Ipswich

Top of the charts as Nottingham Forest’s record signing is Omari Hutchinson, who arrived from Ipswich Town in 2025 at a cost of £37.5m.

The winger was a shining light at Portman Road in their only season back in the Premier League, which resulted in Forest swooping for the England U21 international.

Worcestershire storm to victory after emotional Tom Fell hundred

Fell’s first red-ball ton since recovering from testicular cancer paves way for 78-run win

ECB Reporters Network18-Aug-2020Tom Fell surely possesses a unique perspective on playing cricket and it was a day for him to cherish deeply as his first red-ball hundred since beginning treatment for testicular cancer in 2015 helped his side to a second Bob Willis Trophy victory as Worcestershire beat Northamptonshire by 78 runs at Wantage Road. His unbeaten 110 allowed Worcestershire to declare on the final morning and set Northamptonshire 263 in 68 overs. It was easily defended as the hosts were bowled out for 184.Fell was a rising star at New Road and as 21-year-old in 2015 made 1127 first-class runs at 42. But the hundred he made against Middlesex that September was his last until now. Cancer cruelly halted his career progress but here was evidence that he still has much to give the game.It was a touching moment when he took his overnight 81 to a sixth first-class century, nudging his 205th delivery to long leg off Gareth Berg. There was visible emotion on the visitors’ balcony. And no doubt scenes of joy inside the dressing room after Worcestershire completed victory to keep up their challenge for a place in the Bob Willis Trophy final. After a poor 2019 in the County Championship, the Worcester boys are again happy in red-ball cricket. After Fell reached his hundred, the flare immediately went up and he and Ed Barnard launched 29 in two overs before the declaration came, Worcestershire no doubt mindful after running out of time against Glamorgan last week. The target offered hope for Northamptonshire and they began brightly. Ricardo Vasconcelos cut two boundaries, flicked another and beautifully drove Brett D’Oliveira for another four to leave an exciting finish in prospect.Tom Fell raises his bat for his hundred•Getty ImagesThe hosts were going very well at 48 without loss but it was quickly ruined by their latest collapse at they lost 3 for 7 in 10 balls. Both openers fell in identical fashion. But both decisions against Ben Curran, to Joe Leach for 17, and Vasconcelos, to Josh Tongue for 31, appeared to have some doubt with balls from right-arm over to left-handers that didn’t significantly straighten. There was only bemusement, though, as Alex Wakely played a back-foot block and somehow lobbed Tongue to mid-on.Charlie Thurston nicked behind a brisk Barnard away-swinger soon after. Richard Levi then tried to turn Dillon Pennington to leg and got a leading edge to point where Barnard to a good catch diving forward. Pennington struck again before tea as Saif Zaib wafted outside off and edged behind. With their top order having failed for a sixth consecutive innings, Northamptonshire went down swinging in the final session. Berg cut Leach for four but was bowled driving at Tongue. Adam Rossington pulled two boundaries and advanced at Leach to lift him over mid-on. He skewed another four over the slips cordon but eventually skied a catch to Cox off Leach. The fun continued as Nathan Buck struck three sixes – Leach over midwicket, Pennington and Barnard over long-on, the latter after a sashay down the wicket.Buck’s unbeaten 24 was the innings’ third-highest score and Northamptonshire took only four points from the game and have very little to show for their three matches so far. Good job they declared their intention to use the Bob Willis Trophy as a development competition before the season began. The late hitting did save them from consecutive defeats by a three-figure margin but as Barnard took out Jack White’s off stump to finish the game, it completed another disappointing week for a county who made much progress in 2019.

Player agrees "in principle" to join Tottenham as club work to replace him

Tottenham are gearing up for two first-team friendlies in one day this Saturday, and away from the pitch, Thomas Frank’s busy Lilywhites continue their summer recruitment plans.

Tottenham offered £43m PSG talent who was once "very close to joining"

Spurs have a new opportunity.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 24, 2025

Spurs announced that they will be taking on both Wycombe Wanderers in a behind-closed-doors encounter at 11am tomorrow before their trip to Kenilworth Road, with their later clash against Luton Town kicking off just four hours later.

The two matches will give a number of first-team players much-needed match action, with the squad set to be split into two groups. Earlier this week, Frank explained this decision in an official statement which confirmed their additional game against Wycombe.

“We wanted an extra game in our schedule to give as many players as many match minutes as possible, in order to put them in the best position, physically,” said Frank.

“We will play two even, strong teams, and they will play between 60 and 75 minutes, maybe more. By the end of Saturday, 22 players will have played a lot of match minutes, and they will be in a very good place before we go on tour.”

As Tottenham gear up for two 90-minute contests in quick succession, chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange maintain the club’s pursuit of new signings before deadline day on September 1.

Reliable media sources claim that Brentford striker Yoane Wissa remains a target for Spurs, and they’re in ongoing talks for the Congolese who scored 20 goals in all competitions under Frank last campaign.

However, Newcastle United are also in talks for Wissa, and they’re poised to submit a new bid in an attempt to win the race for Frank’s former star (Sky Sports).

While Frank faces stiff competition for the 28-year-old, as things stand, it looks as if Spurs are the only team competing for Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White.

Morgan Gibbs-White agrees "in principle" to join Tottenham

The 25-year-old was on the verge of a move to north London a fortnight ago, with Spurs even scheduling a medical for Gibbs-White on July 11 as they prepared to pay his £60 million release clause (BBC).

However, Forest then unceremoniously blocked the transfer – threatening both Tottenham and the player’s agent with a letter of legal action against them (Sky Sports). Nuno Espirito Santo’s side objected to how Spurs found out about Gibbs-White’s ‘confidential’ clause whilst accusing them of ‘tapping up’ the player too, and this tense stalemate remains ongoing with Levy hoping for a breakthrough (Fabrizio Romano).

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, sharing an update on the situation for TBR Football, Gibbs-White has agreed “in principle” to join Tottenham, and Forest appear resigned to eventually losing the England international.

This is because Evangelos Marinakis and his recruitment team are actively pursuing replacements, with talks ongoing over a deal for Man City’s James McAtee.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

Spurs are not giving up on signing Gibbs-White and the attacking midfielder remains their absolute priority. Forest were also hoping that City would come back in for Gibbs-White to spark a potential bidding war, but Pep Guardiola and co have “moved on” – giving Frank a clear run.

If the former Wolves star wishes to push through a move to N17, Sky Sports have claimed that Gibbs-White has the option of threatening Forest with legal action of his own for breach of contract.

Alternatively, Tottenham could offer to pay a larger fee to Forest in an attempt to loosen their stranglehold on Gibbs-White and finally seal the deal.

Organisers to review security after pitch invader sustains broken arm

Spectator was heavily apprehended after running on the field at the end of England v Afghanistan match at Old Trafford

George Dobell19-Jun-2019Organisers of the Cricket World Cup are “reviewing circumstances” after a spectator sustained a broken arm at the end of the game between England and Afghanistan in Manchester on Tuesday. The spectator ran on to the playing field at the end of the match and, as he approached players, was apprehended by stewards. He fell heavily and was subsequently taken to hospital where the broken arm was diagnosed. But it is the events leading up to the incident that may concern organisers just as much. Earlier in the game another spectator – who had been sitting close to the group who came on at the end of the match – ran on to the pitch and removed the bails at both ends. He was not apprehended until he crossed the advertising hoardings on the opposite side of the ground.Other spectators in the same stand claim passive stewarding did nothing to prevent the incident. They also claim the spectator – who they say was young and inebriated – was not removed from the ground but kept in a holding area by a public bar for several hours. As a result, they suggest there was little disincentive to deter other pitch invaders.Pitch invasion is considered a criminal act in the UK. An announcement is made before each match warning spectators that anyone encroaching on the playing area will be prosecuted for aggravated trespass and could face heavy fines. A spokesperson for the Cricket World Cup was unable to clarify whether any further action had been taken against any of the pitch invaders.”A spectator, who was involved in a pitch invasion at the England vs Afghanistan match, slipped awkwardly and suffered a suspected fracture of his arm,” the spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. “The individual discharged himself from medical care at Old Trafford before transportation to a local hospital was arranged.ALSO READ: World Cup Central: Hashmatullah bounces back for sake of mum“CWC19 and the venues take the security of everyone involved in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup very seriously and we work closely together to ensure the highest safety standards are adhered to regarding spectators. CWC19 is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances of this accident with the venue.”Armed police and a large numbers of stewards are no longer an unusual sight at sports events in the UK. The global heightened security threat, combined with a fear of further attacks on sportspeople – incidents such as the stabbing of Monica Seles and the assault on Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish during the derby match with Birmingham City spring to mind – have created a zero tolerance attitude towards spectators encroaching on to the playing area.Andrew Symonds and Terry Alderman are among the players to have taken matters into their own hands when approached by pitch invaders. Symonds memorably stopped one such spectator especially abruptly with a shoulder barge in March 2008 while Alderman sustained a dislocated shoulder in November 1982 when tackling a spectator who had run on to the pitch and punched him.

Sean Abbott and Moises Henriques dismantle Queensland for 89

Sean Abbott claimed 5 for 31 and Moises Henriques nipped out three top-six batsmen as New South Wales secured a convincing 174-run win at the Gabba by skittling Queensland for 89.Set 264 in conditions which had been challenging for batsmen throughout, Queensland never threatened to get close to the target after Abbott ripped out the top order with an impressive new-ball spell. With the light fading, New South Wales were told they could only use spin as the overs ticked down, but they were able to avoid having to return on the final day when Jason Sangha had Billy Stanlake caught at slip.Abbott had reduced the the Bulls to 3 for 14 inside six overs. Joe Burns shouldered arms to a delivery that ducked in and took off stump and then two ball later Marnus Labuschagne was given lbw to complete a pair. Charlie Hemphrey became the second batsman dismissed not offering a shot when his pad was clipped by Abbott.New South Wales’ charge was momentarily halted by Matt Renshaw and Sam Heazlett but Henriques’ introduction quickly put Queensland back in the mire when his second ball climbed and nipped away to take Renshaw’s edge. Heazlett was then caught in two minds whether to play or leave a short delivery, lobbing a simple catch to gully, and Nathan McSweeney was caught behind. It was now only a matter of whether the Blues could win in three days. Trent Copeland hastened the end by having Jimmy Peirson caught at third slip and then Abbott returned to complete his haul.New South Wales had fought hard through their second innings in conditions that continued to favour the quicks. Daniel Hughes and Henriques took their overnight stand to 119 with Henriques producing the most dominant batting of the match with his 78 off 116 balls. After resisting the pacemen, it was spin which broke through when Henrqiues edged Labuschagne to slip in his first over.Sangha edged a lifting delivery from Stanlake and Michael Neser ended Hughes’ gritty 218-ball stay when, after beating him repeatedly outside off, he had the batsman caught behind. Hughes had reached 40 off 83 balls on the second day, and his next 28 runs took 135 deliveries.Neser was impressive with old and new ball, later having Peter Nevill caught in the gully. However, Jack Edwards produced a valuable hand of 40 as the lower order pushed the lead over 200. It proved more than enough.

National Bank fold for 44, Mohammad Asif takes another five-for

National Bank fold for 44 (forty-four!)Perhaps no pitch truly is a 44 all out pitch, but if ever there was an exception, it would be had on the domestic circuit in Pakistan’s premier first-class competition (simply writing that is becoming embarrassing). In Faisalabad, A Shan Masood-led National Bank fell for 44 in under 18 overs against SNGPL – led by Misbah-ul-Haq still – bringing the nature of the pitches into sharp focus once more. Unkempt grounds, squalid dressing rooms and poorly prepared pitches have all been in evidence over the first few weeks of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy as the gulf between international and first-class cricket continues to widen.150 was crossed in all of the other three innings, with the match effectively decided when SNGPL opened up with 265 first up, thanks to a number of stellar contributions including a half-century from Adnan Akmal. Form continues to elude Misbah, however, whose scores of 2 and 7 mean he has mustered just 31 runs in four innings this season. The Lahore regions clinch thrillersAfter eight matches among them, neither Lahore side, the Whites or the Blues, had manged to scrape a win between them. But in their fifth match each, both got their campaigns off the ground, and in dramatic fashion too. Lahore Whites clinched a thrilling one-wicket win, with the No. 11 Bilal Anwar striking the winning boundary as they chased 184 against Peshawar. He was the hero in more ways than one, also taking five wickets in Peshawar’s second innings. The game had been evenly poised almost throughout, with Peshawar taking a slender 24-run lead in the first innings.Lahore Blues’ victory was similarly dramatic as they staved off an impressive Multan fightback to defend what had initially seemed like an insurmountable 263-run target. Usman Liaqat’s 86 took Multan to 241, but a five-wicket haul from the former Pakistan fast bowler Aizaz Cheema ensured Lahore Blues’ winless run wouldn’t extend as they put their first points on the board.Mohammad Asif? Consistency? When Mohammad Asif took five wickets in an innings in the previous round, it could be discounted as one of those spells he bowls once every so often, yet not nearly often enough to be taken seriously. Who knew, though, that the boy could follow it up with another five-for, this time against ZTBL. Seven wickets in the match – just like in his last game – from Asif helped WAPDA cruise to a nine-wicket victory, their fourth win in five matches. What’s more, he even scored 34 in the first innings; he had a highest score in international cricket of 29. The comparisons with Glenn McGrath were more multi-facteded than you’d appreciate at first thought. While we’re on the subject of wagging tails, though, it would be discourteous not to mention his teammate Ehsan Adil’s flourish. No allrounder himself, he smashed an unbeaten 85 in WAPDA’s first innings, 37 more than he has managed over eight international innings.
