Leeds eyeing £4m-rated gem who’s "like Riyad Mahrez" to partner Summerville

There's no denying that Leeds United have started the new year with a bang, romping to three successive 3-0 victories across the Championship and FA Cup, with even the returning Patrick Bamford now fit and firing again with a goal in each of those triumphs.

For all the positivity surrounding Elland Road at present, amid those statement showings, manager Daniel Farke is seemingly aware that there is still room for improvement with the club still seven points behind the automatic promotion places.

Daniel Farke.

In order to bridge that gap over the coming months, the Whites must surely act decisively this month in order to strengthen their ranks, with recent reports indicating that the Yorkshire side do have their eyes set on one intriguing target, in particular.

Leeds eyeing Premier League talent

According to respected insider Phil Hay of The Athletic, Farke views the full-back positions as particular priorities this month, having only recently allowed the likes of Djed Spence and Luke Ayling to depart.

While that has heightened the need for reinforcement at right-back, it is on the opposite flank where the promotion hopefuls could also bolster their ranks, with Hay naming Luton Town's Ryan Giles among those to have been linked with a move to Elland Road.

The 23-year-old only joined the Hatters from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent deal over the summer, although having started just five Premier League games this season, the Englishman may potentially be on his way.

Having previously shone on the last of several loans away from Molineux at Middlesbrough last season, the Telford-born gem – who is valued at €5m (£4m) by CIES Football Observatory – could again wreak havoc in the Championship for Leeds over the coming months.

How Ryan Giles would fit in at Leeds

While the former England U20 international has typically operated as a wing-back in recent seasons with both Luton and Boro, he could well offer a real attack-minded presence at left-back for Farke's side, as showcased by his stellar form last season at the Riverside.

That 2022/23 campaign saw Giles register a remarkable haul of 12 assists in all competitions – 11 of which came in 45 outings in the second tier – ensuring he could offer a real creative outlet for the likes of Bamford, Georginio Rutter and Joel Piroe to feed off.

As new Birmingham City boss Tony Mowbray previously stated, the 6 foot ace has "got fantastic talent, brilliant speed, amazing technique on his left foot", ensuring he could also strike up a devastating partnership with Crysencio Summerville down the left flank.

Ryan Giles' 2022/23 Championship stats

45 games (43 starts)

11 assists

23 'big chances' created

2 key passes per game

1.9 tackles & interceptions per game

52% total duels won

7.07 avg. match rating

Stats via Sofascore

The young Dutchman has emerged as a real talisman this season with 12 goals and seven assists in just 24 league outings while typically operating down the left, with overlapping runs from the forward-thinking Giles only set to allow him more space to thrive in.

The Luton man would also be able to provide quality service to Summerville down that side having created 23 'big chances' last season while averaging an impressive two key passes per game – further evidence of just what an attacking weapon he is with his wand of a left foot.

Aside from being able to flourish alongside Leeds' number ten, Giles also has the flexibility to be able to feature on the right-hand side if required, with Mowbray hailing his ability to "dance inside like Riyad Mahrez" when operating in that role.

As Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola stated back in 2021, Mahrez is a player of "special quality" who "dances on the pitch", having contributed 82 goals and 61 assists in 284 Premier League games during his time at the Etihad and for Leicester City.

While Giles won't be tasked with operating in quite such an advanced role as the Algerian winger, the fact he has been spoken of so highly should be music to the ears of those at Elland Road.

Marnus Labuschagne's hat-trick of tons lights up engrossing first day at Perth day-night Test

New Zealand’s bowlers kept their disciplines in extreme conditions to keep the match in the balance

The Report by Daniel Brettig12-Dec-2019Stumps A hat-trick of Test hundreds for Marnus Labuschagne, sealed with a straight six, belied an otherwise fascinating battle between Australia’s batting order and New Zealand’s skilful and diligent attack, even as it was shorn of Lockie Ferguson by a calf strain that may cause increasing pain for the visitors the longer the Perth day-night Test goes on.In front of a crowd of 19,084 who huddled in what shaded areas they could find on a day when temperatures hovered near 40C until the sun went down, New Zealand gave an exceptional account of themselves in the absence of Trent Boult and despite the looming threats of David Warner and Steven Smith. Both Warner, before lunch, and Smith in a lengthy partnership with the ebullient Labuschagne, had some influence on proceedings. But in each case the tourists’ discipline, fitness and commitment to the plans hatched by their captain Kane Williamson ensured that neither Warner nor Smith could get away from them. In Smith’s case it meant one of his slowest Test innings, ended in the leg trap that the unstinting Neil Wagner has set for so many international batsmen over a career that has surprised in much the same way Labuschagne’s now is.Marnus Labuschagne celebrates his hundred•Associated Press

Warner had earlier seen a promising start ended by a superlative caught and bowled from Wagner, who alongside Colin de Grandomme, Tim Southee and Ferguson formed a typically diligent New Zealand attack – something all the more admirable in the prevailing conditions.Williamson was unable to pick Trent Boult as he continues his recovery from a side strain suffered against England, meaning a debut for the speedy Ferguson. Australia were unchanged for the third match in a row. They have not lost a series at home to New Zealand since 1985.Warner made his intent known by hustling a single from Tim Southee’s first ball of the match, and while Ferguson neared 150kph in his first over, his lines and lengths were variable enough to allow scoring opportunities for both openers. Southee’s frustration at not finding an early wicket was demonstrated when he hurled a solidly defended ball back at Joe Burns, prompting an exchange with Warner who rebuked him as “you’re supposed to be Mr Nice Guy”.Ferguson’s replacement by Wagner and the introduction of de Grandhomme brought some more pertinent questions for Burns and Warner, as the run-rate was clamped. De Grandhomme’s first ball to Burns was not the away swinger he evidently expected but a nip backer that won an lbw verdict from umpire Aleem Dar, even through ball-tracking would show the ball comfortably missing leg stump as Burns was batting well forward of his crease.Neil Wagner celebrates a stunning caught and bowled•Getty Images

Labuschagne settled in quickly enough, but as tea beckoned, Warner misjudged a Wagner change-up and was on his way, allowing Steven Smith his earliest entry to the Test batting crease this summer. Warner had looked set to maintain his commanding run of form this summer, but six minutes before the interval he scooped back a low full toss to Wagner, who claimed the chance inches from the ground with his right hand as he followed through.Runs did not accrue easily when play resumed, to the extent that both Smith and Labuschagne could be seen trying to force a few shots that did not necessarily lend themselves to the types of questions they were being asked. Wagner’s angles and preference for the short ball posed challenges for both batsmen, while Ferguson had Smith flirting with balls well wide of the off stump, breaking 149kph every now and then and gaining plenty of bounce from the surface also.Labuschagne strode to an eighth score of 50 or more in Test matches this year, but Smith’s inability to turn the scoreboard over ultimately drew an outside edge from Ferguson. Maddeningly for New Zealand, Tom Latham picked up the chance late and could only throw his hands to the left as the ball burst through them. Australia were thus able to get through to the final, floodlit session with eight wickets in the bank and two formidable players at the crease.Lockie Ferguson made his Test debut•Associated Press

Things got worse for the visitors when they advised early in the final session that Ferguson had gone to hospital for scans on a calf problem. The mere fact that they were required suggesting he may well be out of the match and perhaps the whole, tightly-packed series also. With Labuschagne quickly closing on a century and Smith straining to break his shackles, this was a moment in which many sides would have flagged, but Williamson was able to conjure further efforts from his men, aided perhaps by cooler evening temperatures. While Labuschagne advanced to loft Mitchell Santner beyond long-on for only the second six of his career to leap from 95 to a joyous 101, Wagner was not deterred from his attempts to corral Smith, and he was ultimately rewarded with a distracted attempt at a hook shot and a miscue lobbing gently to Southee at leg gully. Smith was furious with himself, but the pressure had built over 164 balls – a volume of deliveries by which time he had usually passed three figures in England.Better tidings arrived for New Zealand when Southee took the second new ball and bent an inswinger around Matthew Wade’s front pad to flick the off stump as the left-hander shouldered arms to his immediate regret.Four wickets down with 47 deliveries left in the evening, made for a queasy sort of session as far as Australia were concerned, as underlined by how Labuschagne was troubled more than once to pick up the line of the ball. But Travis Head was able to survive a few nervous moments to keep Labuschagne company up to the close, even if the No. 3 offered Wagner an airy upper cut in the final over that fell slightly short and wide of third man. Australia know they have been in a fight; they have enough batting left to land some major blows on day two.

No DRS for South Africa women's one-off Test against England

This will be the only international match – men’s or women’s – played in South Africa this summer to not have DRS

Firdose Moonda14-Dec-2024There will be no DRS for the one-off Test between South Africa and England in Bloemfontein, the first women’s Test in South Africa in 22 years. The match will be the only one out of the 21 internationals played by both men and women in South Africa this home summer without DRS.This was the first season where DRS – a technology that costs millions of dollars – was used for women’s bilateral internationals in South Africa. CSA said it has opted to prioritise DRS in white-ball women’s internationals for now.”The inclusion of the DRS for the ongoing inbound tour against England was agreed upon at the planning stage of the tour, noting that it will be the first time it was used for women’s bilateral tours in South Africa in recent history,” Enoch Nkwe, South Africa’s director of national teams and high performance, said in response to a query about the absence of DRS for the Test.”The white-ball formats were prioritised with regards to DRS for this tour as it directly impacted the Proteas Women’s rankings in T20I cricket and the Women’s Championship as well as the overall CSA strategy for the senior women’s national team.”While the development of the red-ball format is important, it is worth noting that resources are currently being directed at the white-ball formats due to the significance of ODI and T20I cricket in the current women’s international cricket landscape.”South Africa had already qualified for the ODI World Cup before the series against England but aimed to finish as high on the Women’s Championship points table. In the ICC rankings, they are currently ranked fourth in ODIs and fifth in T20Is. There was one instance during the ongoing England tour when DRS malfunctioned. In the third over of South Africa’s chase in the first ODI in Kimberley, Tazmin Brits was pinged on the pad by Lauren Bell and was given out lbw. She wanted to review the decision but could not because the technology was down.ESPNcricinfo understands that, in a home summer where India men’s T20I series was the only profit-making visit, the expense of using the technology was deemed too much for this match. This, despite CSA announcing a profit of US$45.6 million from the last financial year and benefiting from two successive years of India visits. The Test match will be produced on a budget with only seven manned cameras (some matches are broadcast with as many as 30) and two run-out cameras on one side of the field (as opposed to the usual four, two on each side). That means that if there is a fielder in the way of a run-out decision on one side, the TV umpire may not be able to make a decision. The two on-field umpires for the match – Kerrin Klaaste and Lauren Agenbag – will be officiating a Test for the first time.DRS has become the norm in international cricket but there are still matches played without it. At this year’s men’s ODI World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe, DRS was only in place from the Super Six stage. There was no DRS at this year’s women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers in the UAE, or in the recently completed Ireland Women’s tour of Bangladesh.

Melbourne Cricket Club go it alone on improved drop-in pitches

Melbourne Cricket Club, the custodians of the MCG, have no plans to adopt the improved drop-in pitch systems used by Adelaide Oval and Perth Stadium, and have for years had minimal links with the company at the cutting edge of drop-in pitch technology in Australia.StrathAyr, the portable turf company that first become involved in managing the transition between cricket and football at major venues following the creation of drop-in pitches for Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket at Waverley Park in suburban Melbourne, has only a limited relationship with the MCG, dating back to its use by the rival Docklands Stadium to produce drop-in pitches in the early 2000s.While the company is still contracted by the MCG to transport the pitches from its nursery to the centre of the ground at the conclusion of each football season and back at the beginning of the next, the cricket club has chosen instead to go it alone. It is attempting to produce quality pitches from concrete pitch trays that have long since been superseded by the porous, open-bottomed steel versions favoured at Adelaide Oval, Perth Stadium and elsewhere. In the case of Adelaide Oval, StrathAyr was closely involved in the construction of the drop-in pitches first installed in 2013, when the ground became a multipurpose venue for both AFL and cricket matches. Working closely with the oval’s curator Damian Hough, they oversaw the use of steel trays on a natural base, supported by pylons, to create a far more natural wicket environment that could also be micromanaged out of season. This blueprint then formed the basis for the construction of the Perth Stadium drop-in pitches, first used for a Test match last summer. In each case, the surfaces produced have been able to create a set of distinctive characteristics, offering something to batsmen, pacemen and spin bowlers. Adelaide’s surface has evolved into one using a generous grass covering that affords the possibility of seam and spin throughout the match, while Perth has so far offered plenty of bounce and pace, in keeping with the pitch’s higher clay content and the traditions of the WACA.ALSO READ: From ‘poor’ ICC rating to match abandoned: timeline of a troubled MCG pitchHowever the MCG’s recent efforts to reinvigorate its pitches has been limited to the removal of the concrete slab under the drop-in wicket block and the growing of new pitches in the original concrete beds, which are not open at the bottom, a marked difference from the Adelaide and Perth systems. The MCC’s chief executive Stuart Fox has insisted that the club can find a pathway to better pitches without changing systems.”The curators talk, they’re part of a network, so they’re always sharing information. We have made changes like removing the concrete base in the middle,” Fox said. “We actually think we’re on the right path.”The drop ins severely deteriorate by day five. Ours haven’t shown that, so that’s why we’re trying to liven up things at the earlier stages of the game – the lateral seam movement is quite important. Age has been a bit of a factor with the pitches. As we move forward the next three years we’ll have new pitches here that hopefully there might be a new brand of cricket for the MCG.”The MCG curator Matt Page, who moved from the WACA and its work on pitches for the new Perth Stadium to the MCG in 2018, had initially spoken about how he was hopeful of implementing a similar system to Adelaide and Perth at the MCG. “The pitches are in a steel tray but they have open bottoms so water can pass through, and the thing is with the concrete pillars, they’re 600mm wide, so basically on a pillar you’ll get half the wicket sitting on one, and half of the tray sitting on another,” Page told ESPNcricinfo last year.ALSO READ: Inside the MCG’s pitch reboot“Then in the middle you’ve got your natural environment in terms of drainage sand and drainage gravel. So it should behave more like an in-situ wicket. It’s a more natural environment for them to grow in, that’s why they went down that path with what Adelaide do. That’s where we’re at at the moment, we’ve got this concrete slab and we want to improve the technology, and it’s with the architects as to how we’re going to get that out and what system we’ll put in place once the season’s done. To go to the rails system, hopefully that’s going to improve our pitch performance.”The MCG curator Matt Page works on the pitch during an Australia training session•Getty Images

However by the start of this season, it was clear that rather than making the full change from one system to another, Page had been left to try to grow new pitches and get better results out of the old ones, while using the same concrete trays. “I guess for us it was trying to create as much of a natural wicket table as we possibly could with the trays. The only thing is the tray is still out there, everything else is like an in-situ wicket, and I guess we’re hoping they might perform more like a natural wicket block,” Page said in October.”The actual tray itself is no different, the thing we’re trialling is a different type of clay which we’re looking at. We’ve built two wickets out the back in our practice area with this different clay. We’re looking at improving our pace and bounce and hopefully, we’ll get some cracks in it which hopefully will lead to some deterioration in our longer formats. That’s all an exciting process that we’re looking forward to and something that we’ll look progressing with over the next couple of years.”That brought some marginal improvement in the surface early in the season, notably the pitch prepared for the Sheffield Shield match won narrowly by Queensland over Victoria. But anxiety at the MCC about the lack of assistance for bowlers led to an underprepared pitch for the Shield game against WA, which was abandoned on Sunday – much to the embarrassment of the MCC, Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia – less than three weeks before the Boxing Day Test.”I think we all know it’s not ideal but our curators and staff have our full support,” Fox said. “They haven’t done this on their own, it’s been at the direction of the MCC and that has been supported by all of our stakeholders. CA have been fantastic. We’ve all wanted life in the pitches, we didn’t want this much and it is unfortunate and we apologise for that but we’re not going to crucify people.”It’s all about learning with pitches that are fairly old. Everyone’s heard about the story and the journey and we’re spending a lot of money to improve our pitches over the long term. It was never ever going to be a short totem game it’s a long term game. It takes a lot of time. a lot of investment. We think we’re on the right path.”As far as drop-in pitches are concerned, the MCC’s path looks an increasingly lonely one.

Arteta and Edu keen on signing elite Ivan Toney alternative for Arsenal

Both manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu are apparently keen on signing an "elite" Ivan Toney striker alternative for Arsenal.

Arsenal want to bring in a new forward

As previously reported, the Gunners are keen on bringing in a new number nine this year, with Arteta said to have been considering whether to sign a striker alongside two new full-backs and a centre midfielder (Miguel Delaney).

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

However, both FFP limitations and a slightly limited budget mean Arsenal may have to compromise on a few of the aforementioned positions.

While Arsenal will have to weigh their next move carefully, the club's need for a proven goalscorer was arguably highlighted by a recent 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup, where Arsenal carved a lot of openings but couldn't quite capitalise.

"Because the ball didn’t go in the net," said Arteta on why Arsenal couldn't score against Liverpool.

"We didn’t take the chances, I haven’t seen any other team in the first six months that have generated what we have done against them in the last two games and we’re not capitalising – not today, in the last few games – that’s why we are not winning games. Performance-wise, merit-wise, there is no question, but to win the game actually the results say something very different. When my team plays with that attitude, with that courage, with that desire and do what they’ve done to probably the best team in Europe at the moment in terms of momentum, what can I do? Stay behind them and support them."

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

In the last few months, Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Brentford star Toney, but Bees manager Thomas Frank is under the impression he's set to stay until the end of the season at least. Given Arteta arguably needs a striker, one alternative they could turn to this year is Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

Edu and Arteta keen on Isak

According to Football Transfers, both manager Arteta and Edu are keeping tabs on Isak, with Arsenal expressing a keen interest in signing who they describe as an "elite" striker.

They had attempted to bring him to the Emirates Stadium in 2022, but were unwilling to pay his release clause at the time which they deemed too high.

However, it is believed they may now "revisit" negotiations this year, with the £120,000-per-week Sweden international thought to be highly regarded by Arsenal's recruitment team.

Isak has scored nine goals in 15 league appearances for Newcastle so far this season, with Eddie Howe praising his ability on more than one occasion.

"I've seen a real desire off the ball from Alex to press, to work, to set the standards, really, from the front in terms of how we play off the ball and I think he's been terrific," said Howe to the media.

Leeds United now preparing offer to sign exciting gem Jack Hastings

Leeds United are now preparing an offer to sign a talented young star at Elland Road as Daniel Farke looks to the future, according to a new report.

Leeds United prepare for January transfers

Despite enjoying a commendable start to life in the Championship, Leeds fans will be keen for their side to strengthen in key positions once the market re-opens in mid-season for business.

On Boxing Day, a 2-1 defeat away to Preston North End in an ill-tempered affair has placed the Whites eight points behind Ipswich Town, who occupy second place in the division, making new arrivals potentially crucial to achieving their aspirations of automatic promotion.

The current Whites number one has left a lot to be desired so far this season.

Defence has been mooted as an area that the Whites could look to beef up under Farke and Fenerbache full-back Bright Osayi-Samuel is reportedly a target at Elland Road. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace are also believed to be keen on the Nigeria international, who is out of contract at the Turkish giants in the summer of 2025.

Capable of playing in a number of positions, the former Queens Park Rangers man would be a coup for the Yorkshire outfit; however, there is no specific fee mentioned in regard to the fee Leeds United may need to pay to acquire the 25-year-old.

Galatasaray forward Kerem Akturkoglu has been mentioned in connection with a move to the Whites; however, he is a potential recruit who would be deemed to be a little more on the ambitious side. Now, the Whites are believed to be readying a bid for an exciting young star who could potentially be one for the future at Elland Road, according to a report.

Leeds United prepare Jack Hastings offer

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are preparing an offer to sign Larne youngster Jack Hastings, who is also attracting interest from Crystal Palace, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Whites have previously monitored the 17-year-old who could now be at the centre of bids from elsewhere, with his current employers braced for approaches concerning the Northern Ireland Under-17 forward.

Hastings is capable of operating as a lone striker or as part of a front-two and has impressed at Under-18 and Under-20 level with his club, leading to his senior debut earlier this year in an Irish Cup tie.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Contact has previously been initiated between the two clubs regarding a potential swoop and the youngster could now move to Elland Road if all goes to plan with a formal bid. Unlikely to come in as a senior player, Hastings would likely head to Thorp Arch on arrival as he continues to develop as a player before potentially breaking through into the first-team later down the line.

Of course, Leeds United fans will want to see senior names come in once the window opens in January; however, bringing in prodigious talent is an important factor in the long-term sustainability of the club.
