Harmanpreet, Rodrigues, spinners make it 4-0 for India

India women wrapped up a dominant tour of Sri Lanka with a 51-run victory in the final T20I in Katunayake. The victory meant India won the series 4-0, with the second game in Colombo being washed out. They had also won the preceding three-match ODI series 2-1.Early on, the Sri Lanka bowlers validated their captain Chamari Atapattu’s decision to field first by dismissing both India openers, Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj, inside the first five overs to reduce them to 30 for 2. That left the onus on the in-form Jemimah Rodrigues, coming into the match on the back of successive half-centuries, to repair the innings, and she once again did the job, joining hands with captain Harmanpreet Kaur to put on 75 for the third wicket. However, once Sri Lanka found a way past the duo, with the wicket of Rodrigues for 46, the end was swift as India lost their last eight wickets for 51 runs. Harmanpreet was the eighth batsman dismissed, for 63 off 38 balls – an innings that contained three fours and five sixes. As was the case when Sri Lanka batted, spinners did the bulk of the damage, with the offspinning duo of Shashikala Siriwardene and Inoshi Priyadarshini snaring three wickets each.Sri Lanka lost Atapattu on the fourth ball of their chase and never quite recovered. Anushka Sanjeewani (29), Siriwardene (22) and Oshadi Ranasinghe (22) got the starts, but Sri Lanka needed them to stay on and steer the chase. The hosts also did not help themselves with three run-outs, including that of Priyadarshini, who was the last batsman dismissed as Sri Lanka crashed to 105 all out. Poonam Yadav was the most successful bowler, picking up 3 for 18 in four overs. Deepti Sharma, who opened the bowling, and Radha Yadav grabbed two wickets each from their respective three overs.

Braves' Spencer Strider Candidly Assessed His Disappointing Outing in Return From IL

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider returned to the mound Tuesday after a lengthy stay on the injured list, but things didn't go all too well for him in his first start since April 16.

Strider surrendered four earned runs, six hits and one walk while striking out three batters across 4 1/3 innings during the team's 5–3 defeat against the Washington Nationals. He didn't have his best stuff throughout his outing, and he acknowledged as much after the game.

During his postgame media address, Strider candidly reflected on his outing, taking ownership for his lackluster performance and how that impacted his team.

"I don't enjoy failing, and certainly not at the expense of the team. We sent a pretty good guy [Bryce Elder] down [to Triple A] that was supposed to pitch in my spot. That's not lost on me. It's kind of the nature of the game. I think it's important to have that perspective when the goal is to win. That takes 26 guys. The guy who's starting on the mound is a big component in coming out and winning every day, so if I can't be better, I don't need to be out there. I think everybody has that mentality at any position. I'm going to have to work to be better," Strider said, via Justin Toscano of

"I certainly want to play, but I take no joy in not giving us a chance. If I don't feel like I can provide for the team, then I don't take much pleasure in losing games for us," he added.

Strider enjoyed a sensational 2023 season, during which he finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting and made the All-Star team. That season, he struck out a league-best 281 batters and owned a 3.86 ERA. Injuries have derailed him a bit of late, however, keeping him sidelined for all but nine innings of the 2024 season and again impacting him at the start of the '25 campaign.

Considering his dominance in previous years, Strider knows he's not living up to expectations on the mound, and offered some rather harsh self-assessment of his performance.

Strider's next scheduled start is slated for Sunday, May 25 against the San Diego Padres.

9/10 Leeds star has made himself as undroppable as Ampadu after Man City

Leeds United will no doubt be disappointed after losing 3-2 against Manchester City this afternoon, but the fans can take some positives out of the clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Phil Foden’s first-minute goal could have signalled an afternoon of domination for Pep Guardiola’s men, but it wasn’t to be, with the hosts only boasting a two-goal lead at the break.

Daniel Farke’s substitutions at the break saw the Whites bring the game level within a matter of minutes, that’s despite many questioning his decision to withdraw Dan James and Wilfried Gnonto.

However, it wasn’t to be as Foden had the last laugh with his stoppage-time effort enough to secure all three points for the Citizens – resulting in a sixth Premier League loss in their last seven.

Despite the defeat, numerous players can leave Manchester with their heads held high, with one player deserving huge plaudits for his showing this afternoon.

Ethan Ampadu’s performance against Manchester City

For the 12th time in the league this season, midfielder Ethan Ampadu started at the heart of the Leeds side, doing so with the captain’s armband too.

His performance against Manchester City was one of a leader, with the Welshman putting in a phenomenal showing and one that was highlighted by his underlying stats.

The 25-year-old featured for the entirety of the contest, completing a staggering 46 passes, with such a tally the highest of any player in Farke’s squad.

He also completed 50% of the dribbles he attempted, whilst making two passes into the final third – often trying to hit the hosts on the counter in the second half.

Ampadu’s incredible showing was also evident without the ball at his feet, subsequently making four recoveries and winning 67% of his ground duels – arguably being one unsung hero at the Etihad.

He certainly wasn’t alone in producing a performance to remember against the former Premier League champions, with Farke needing to select one other player on a consistent basis.

The Leeds player who should be undroppable after City

Many people would have anticipated a dominant victory for City this afternoon, but Leeds certainly put up a fight – which is the least you can ask for given the current situation.

Farke will likely receive some criticism for failing to see out the game for a point, but ultimately, individual errors were the contributing factors to the late goal.

The supporters should also remember it was the manager’s bold call at the break that gave the side the opportunity to get back into the game in the first place.

He switched to a somewhat unfamiliar 3-5-2 system, with the impact of Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the top end of the pitch certainly putting the hosts under huge pressure.

The Englishman replaced Gnonto at the interval, a decision that proved to be an inspirational one given the talisman’s impact during the second half at the Etihad.

His first goal since September certainly wasn’t the prettiest, but it was a reward for his determined efforts at the top end, before poking the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The 28-year-old was also hugely involved in the Whites’ second goal of the contest, with Calvert-Lewin caught in the area by Josko Gvardiol – leading to Lukas Nmecha’s rebounded penalty.

The substitutes’ underlying figures were also massively impressive, with the target man putting doubt into the opposition’s backline after his introduction.

He completed 100% of the dribbles he attempted, whilst also winning 80% of the ground duels he entered – subsequently offering a dominant option during the fightback.

Calvert-Lewin also completed a pass into the final third, whilst also drawing three fouls, with the former Everton man playing a huge part in the side’s ability to get off the canvas.

As a result of his showing off the bench, the striker was handed an impressive 9/10 match rating from Leeds United journalist Graham Smyth – further showcasing his impressive cameo off the bench.

After such a showing, there’s little denying the manager simply has to start Calvert-Lewin on a consistent basis, with his assets constantly causing havoc for the opposition.

Ampadu, too, has showcased this season why he’s a solid Premier League option, which could see both play a huge role in the club’s survival bid come the end of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday could sign "incredible" Gassama upgrade this month

Much like Darren Moore before him, Danny Rohl has found out the hard way that a working relationship with Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri can become fractured.

The German boss won’t be overly pleased with the Owls’ lack of transfer activity, alongside cursing his side’s luck that Shea Charles has been recalled by Southampton, which was officially confirmed by Chansiri at a fiery five-hour fans forum.

However, with new developments suggesting that talks between Rohl and Chansiri have taken place, it would indicate that the South Yorkshire outfit could be busy in the final two weeks of the window with incomings.

The 35-year-old could well want some more attacking reinforcements, with Josh Windass standing out as the Owls’ top scorer, whilst other attackers unfortunately fade into the background.

Josh Windass' importance at Sheffield Wednesday

Windass is way out in front as Wednesday’s leading marksman in the Championship this season with ten strikes next to his name.

Michael Smith follows behind on five goals – but with various clubs circling for his signature this January – the Owls will feel they could miss out on being able to surge up the table based on their over-reliance on the enigmatic 31-year-old to come up trumps.

The standout Wednesday attacker is prone to a spell on the sidelines with injury too, with his numbers for the 2023/24 season seeing him fit for just 25 league games away from his impressive output of six goals and two assists.

But, if he can remain injury-free and keep up his current blistering form – which saw him score four times across the course of December before firing home a pearler versus Derby County – Rohl will know that he can be key to his team rising up the league standings.

But, with others arguably not pulling their weight up top, the door could open for the South Yorkshire side to go all out to land a dream partner for Windass.

Sheffield Wednesday could try to sign "incredible" attacker

As has been reported widely this month, Rohl’s side are one of a whole host of EFL clubs sniffing around Aston Villa ace Louie Barry, with a new twist perhaps boosting the Owls’ chances of landing the electric forward.

Indeed, according to a report from Football Insider, Villa’s preference lies in Barry being moved onto a Championship club on loan this month amidst interest from further afield in the form of Celtic, with Wednesday potentially seeing the 21-year-old as an ideal player to bring in to help out Windass.

After all, Barry had put together his own back catalogue of audacious strikes playing for Stockport County in League One before being recalled, with one curled effort notably just one taster of his stunning 15 goals from 23 league appearances.

Barry entering the building as a statement move would no doubt see a hot-and-cold Djeidi Gassama drop out of the first team fold completely, with the number 41’s output not always at its sharpest.

Looking at the table above, the Wednesday target completely wipes the floor with Gassama in terms of their numbers in the EFL, with Barry far more willing to take risks to catch an opposition goalkeeper out.

On the contrary, his counterpart recedes into his shell far too often down the left, with 12 fewer goals next to his name despite making one more appearance.

It is, of course, all dependent on whether the “incredible” winger – as he was once labelled by Declan Rice – can tear defences apart in the same manner he did in League One in the division above.

But, if he is capable of similar heroics, he could completely transform Wednesday’s attacking game.

He’d be better than Kvaratskhelia: Liverpool looking at "special" £85m ace

Liverpool’s so-called circumspection in the transfer market has been more than offset by sustained success under FSG’s guidance across the past decade or so.

Arne Slot’s start to life as Jurgen Klopp’s successor has been a remarkable thing, more so when you consider the summer spending presented only Federico Chiesa as the sole first-team signing, a wonderful talent but discarded by money-troubled Juventus ahead of the final year of his contract.

    Liverpool managerArneSlot

It was an eye-catching buy, something that Liverpool have cultivated something of a reputation for across so many years of prize-winning sustainability. Football is fickle and its legion of supporters are too, but Liverpool have done alright over these past years, and may yet crown a new chapter with a Premier League title, six points clear with a game in hand.

Few foresaw this, however, there’s a German sat in a reclining chair somewhere in a Red Bull, wry smile on his face, who always knew that the time was right to relinquish his power and usher in someone new.

Liverpool may well win the Premier League and perhaps another competition too, but if the Reds wish to stay ahead of their fierce rivals over the coming years, it feels paramount that signings are made this year.

There is a willingness to fork out funds on the right target. Liverpool, after all, held a genuine interest in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Why Liverpool wanted to sign Kvaratskhelia

At the start of January, Liverpool made their interest in Kvaratskhelia known. Rumours were starting to surface of the Georgian’s potential departure from Napoli.

    Kvaratskhelia

While Paris Saint-Germain were in the driving seat after holding early talks, Anfield’s sporting director Richard Hughes was attentive and, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, ready to pounce.

Fledgling intrigue failed to materialise into something concrete, with PSG advancing discussions and Liverpool opting against lodging an official bid. The 23-year-old is now formally Parisien property.

It does show that Liverpool would be willing to spend big on a left-sided forward, however, and shines a light on Luis Diaz’s contract situation: the Colombia international, 28, is contracted until 2028 but has long-standing interest from Barcelona.

Liverpool aren’t naive and have already honed their sights on a different target on the wing.

    Liverpool monitoring rising talent

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool have been scouting Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, though Chelsea are also interested and have already made a formal enquiry.

Gittens might only be 20 but he’s already become a major player for the Yellow Wall and has excelled both in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

Liverpool would need to fork out an incredible €100m (translating to about £85m) figure to bring Gittens to Merseyside, but if Diaz, for example, is signed by Barcelona, this could be a road worth pursuing.

What Jamie Gittens would bring to Anfield

Gittens might only be in the maiden stage of his career but he’s already proving himself as an important member of a talented Dortmund side, racking up 16 goals and 14 assists across 84 professional appearances for BVB, joining them after leaving the famed Manchester City academy.

With fleet feet, nifty skills and composure during vital moments, Gittens is undoubtedly made for Premier League football, his exciting performances over in Germany translatable.

Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in action

Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley has even proclaimed Gittens to be “England’s best left winger in 2024/25” after his goal-heavy success under Nuru Sahin’s wing this season.

As per FBref, Gittens ranks among the top 7% of positional peers in the German top flight this season for goals scored while also ranking among the top 1% for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90, highlighting not only his aptitude in front of goal but also his athletic qualities that could align neatly with Slot’s style.

Liverpool might have missed out on one of the world’s foremost wide forwards in Kvaratskhelia, but Gittens would be an able alternative and, perhaps, one with the capacity to eclipse the Georgia superstar down the line.

Curiously, Gittens is already proving himself to be a clinical striker in front of goal, converting seven of his 11 big chances in Germany this term. Kvaratskhelia is also sharp in the final third, bagging five of seven in Serie A before jetting off to France.

However, you could actually make a compelling argument for Gittens being the more complete player from an attacking standpoint, for the English talent outranks Kvaratskhelia when considering combative and ball-carrying metrics. He might not be quite so heavy with his creative output, but Gittens has actually racked up as many assists as the new PSG recruit in respective leagues this year.

And anyway, the £49k-per-week prospect racked up eight assists last season despite only starting 18 matches across all competitions for Dortmund.

Hailed for one “special” Champions League performance by Romano, Gittens has the world at his feet and could become a major player at Liverpool.

It might actually be beneficial for his development to make the move to Anfield now and learn under the wing of superstars Diaz and Cody Gakpo, always with his sights set on a moveless starting berth down the line.

He’s already outperforming Kvaratskhelia in some interesting metrics and could ascend to the next level in Slot’s thriving system.

Long gap a chance for SA to reflect on mistakes

With the Bangalore washout effectively reducing the Test series to a three-match affair, South Africa need to use their spare time to learn from their misjudgments, particularly their reading of spin

Firdose Moonda19-Nov-2015Perhaps four-Test series are not meant for South Africa. Before this trip to India, they last had the luxury of a lengthy contest six years ago, against England at home. A year before that was when they played four Tests away, also against England. Their only four-Test series against India took place 23 years ago, in the summer of 1992-93. This ongoing tour will update those statistics, but not really explain the big picture. The Bangalore washout has effectively reduced this contest to a three-Test series – the kind South Africa are used to playing – except that this one comes with a bit more time. In an international cricket calendar which runs on a cluttered schedule, few teams can slow down
the clock this way and how South Africa make use of the extra days will be crucial to their success. The three-day match in Mohali meant South Africa had double the days they would have had – six instead of three – to prepare for Bangalore. They spent one of them on scuffed-up surfaces at the PCA, which was exactly what a team that had been puzzled by conditions they expected to prevail through the series should have done. What they did not plan properly for was the opposite: an absence of turn.Rain in Bangalore meant that the surface was not as ragged as Mohali’s. South Africa still played for turn – that is what they had been practising – and when there was not any, they were stumped. So now, South Africa may be a little confused. Should they sharpen their skills against spin or no spin? Should they focus on the slowness of the surface or the way the SG ball moves through the air? Luckily, they probably have enough time to fit in all of that. The gap between the Bangalore and Nagpur Tests was always going to be a week, but the four days lost to rain have made it 11 days between game time. That is both good and bad news for South Africa. The good is that they have even more time than they had after Mohali to practice. The bad news is that with all the rain around, there was nowhere in Bangalore they could practice.Towards the end of day four, when it had been dry for several hours everywhere except the patch at short cover on the outfield that
prevented play from getting underway, some South Africa players were spotted making their way to the nets. They will be back there on
Friday, when they have scheduled an optional training session at the Chinnaswamy. The weather, though, which is set to stay wet, could thwart their plans.South Africa may be better served heading to Nagpur earlier. Even though there may be less to do socially in Nagpur, there will
be more to do in the middle. Unless of course, time in the middle is not what South Africa feel they need and want to spend their time on the mind instead.Their approach so far has been to bat as though facing boogeymen, and try blasting their way to a big total. They have pushed their usual
pattern of playing themselves in and persisting to the back of their minds as they perceived conditions to be something they are not. On
reflection – something Hashim Amla said they will do but not overdo – South Africa will see that the surfaces have not been snakepits, and the spinners – barring R Ashwin, who has bowled beautifully – have not been snipers. Poor shot selection has accounted for more dismissals than individually great deliveries. For South Africa, who have had praises sung about their technique and temperament in equal measure, their application will have disappointed them. So will the knowledge that they allowed themselves to be so heavily influenced by the surround sound that started the series. The hype was about home advantage (read: raging turners) and South Africa bought into it. Now they have to demand a refund from themselves. The talk is not going to change. The Nagpur pitch has been baking under blue skies and Delhi, which will now almost certainly host the fourth Test, indicated weeks ago that they will prepare the pitch the BCCI wants. South Africa can be fairly certain that means it will be neither fast nor flat. The reality is not going to change either. Nagpur is a must-win for South Africa if they are to win a series in India for the first time in 15 years. It is also a must-not-lose if South Africa are to extend their nine-year unbeaten series record on the road. In other words, a draw in Nagpur would also do because it would give South Africa a chance to salvage the series in Delhi.

Everton made "important bid" to sign massive upgrade on Dwight McNeil

Fair to say, Everton really need to strengthen their attacking options in January.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth means the Toffees have not failed to score in eight of their last ten Premier League matches, leaving them just one point and two places above the relegation zone.

Also, as noted during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, since the start of last season, Everton have scored just 26 goals from open play; for context, that’s a ginormous 30 fewer than the team second-bottom of this list, namely West Ham.

Under Sean Dyche, spending has been very minimal but, following the Friedkin Group’s takeover, confirmed in mid-December, there’s likely to be scope for the Blues to bring in much-needed reinforcements this month.

Premier League player wanted by Everton

As reported by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter earlier this week, Everton had “opened talks” with Aston Villa, as they attempt to sign Jaden Philogene.

However, in a big twist, the player is now on his way to Ipswich Town with Fabrizio Romano having revealed on Wednesday night that he’s due to travel to Portman Road for a medical.

Despite being just 22-years-old, Philogene has already played for Stoke City, Cardiff City, Hull City and now Aston Villa twice.

It was last season, when he was with the Tigers, he really burst onto the scene, scoring an astonishing rabona against Rotherham in February 2024, that was nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award.

This led to journalist Lewis Railton describing him as a “skilful, yet direct winger”, labelling him a “real talent”.

    Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

How Jaden Philogene would have improved Everton's attack

Well, since moving back to the Midlands, the winger has been given limited opportunities, starting just four matches across all competitions, totalling 535 minutes overall, yet to register a goal or an assist during his second spell in claret and blue.

Thus, a move away from Villa Park in January could be best for Philogene’s development.

As mentioned earlier, Everton really find goals hard to come by; they’re the lowest scorers in the Premier League this season with just 15 goals, while they’re also bottom of the xG standings, accumulating a miserly 18.1 to date.

Their joint-top scorers are Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye, both with a miserly three goals, so how does Philogene compare to the Toffees’ current wide-attackers?

He’s scored more goals, registered more progressive carries and attempted more shots than all of the trio, most crucially of all, Philogene has overperformced his xG, while Jack Harrison and Ndiaye have both underperformed theirs.

McNeil, the most impressive of the Toffees’ trio, has missed the last six games due to a knee injury, with Dyche describing this issue as “a bit trickier than we thought”, but even when he was playing regularly, Philogene was outperforming his numbers.

Thus, put succinctly, this is a deal Everton should be gutted about failing to complete.

According to Chelsea’s ambitious plan to relocate to Earl’s Court has hit a potential roadblock, with club co-owner Todd Boehly warned that delays in submitting a bid could cost them the opportunity. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over Chelsea in 2022, increasing the 40,343-seat capacity of Stamford Bridge has been a major priority. However, due to the complexity of redevelopment, the club has been exploring alternative locations. Talks have taken place with key figures involved in shaping the future of Earl’s Court, a prime site for a new stadium.

      THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea’s proposal faces significant hurdles due to a competing project by the Earl’s Court Development Company (ECDC). The ECDC is advocating for a mixed-use development that does not include a football stadium. Their public consultation process has already been completed, and a final decision is expected this year from Hammersmith and Fulham Council and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council.

If ECDC’s plan is approved before Chelsea make an offer, securing the site could become more difficult. Sources suggest that while an agreement could still be reached, the price of the land—currently estimated at £500 million—would increase significantly. Additionally, the political backing needed for Chelsea’s stadium plans could become harder to obtain, as local politicians are more inclined to support ECDC’s proposal for new housing over a football venue.

    • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite the obstacles, Chelsea may still have a strategic advantage in negotiations. Some London planning experts believe that ECDC’s proposal might be financially unviable, opening the door for the Blues to present their alternative plan. Sources indicate that there is private political support for Chelsea’s stadium project, as a multi-use football arena could boost the local economy while still allowing for the inclusion of affordable housing.

Chelsea have pinpointed the Lillie Bridge depot as a potential site for their stadium. The club has previously held discussions with Transport for London (TfL) and real estate developer Delancey, both of whom are key stakeholders in the Earl’s Court site. However, no formal agreements have been reached.

One major issue holding up Chelsea’s progress is the lack of an official bid. Until the club makes a public declaration of interest, serious negotiations with political and planning figures cannot move forward. Reports suggest that part of the delay stems from internal tensions within Chelsea’s ownership. There have been claims that Boehly and Clearlake Capital have explored buying each other out, raising concerns about the club’s long-term direction. It is also unclear when the Chelsea board last discussed stadium plans, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the project.

      WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

While relocating to Earl’s Court is viewed as the most practical long-term solution, Chelsea have not completely abandoned the idea of redeveloping Stamford Bridge. However, this presents significant logistical and financial challenges. One major obstacle is the stadium’s proximity to railway lines, making reconstruction difficult. A stand-by-stand renovation has been considered but is seen as impractical, while a full demolition would force Chelsea to play at a temporary venue—likely Wembley—for up to seven years. In 2023, Chelsea acquired a 1.2-acre site next to Stamford Bridge from the Stoll charity, securing additional space for a potential redevelopment. However, before making any final decision, the club must reach an agreement with Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO), who own the freehold of Stamford Bridge.
