The proposal was put forward by Labour peer Lord Bassam of Brighton in an amendment to the Football Governance Bill, which would see an independent regulator brought in for the sport in England. According to , it is believed the amendment only has a small chance of being agreed, but Premier League teams have called for such a ban from the government.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Newcastle are currently owned by the Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which is chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, while City's owner, Sheikh Mansour, is vice-president of the United Arab Emirates. Were the new proposal to become law, both teams would have to find new owners to be given a licence by the regulator.

The bill and Bassam's amendment are still up for discussion in the House of Lords over the coming weeks.

Too many debuts, too much uncertainty

The Australian team that dominated during the nineties and early 2000s were a settled lot, as are the current England side, something the current selectors could take a leaf from

Jack Mendel16-Aug-2013Between 1989 and 2005, Ashes series were won exclusively by Australia. It was barely a contest. As England embark on a similar quest of Ashes glory, their belief in consistency shows strong similarities with that great Australian side of world beaters.More importantly, Australia’s consistent failures show similarities with England of the 1990s, which is like basing a model of a brand new car on a broken three wheeler with engine problems.Contrasting eras can often lose perspective, and statistics often skew reality, but hopefully this can shed some light nevertheless. In order to build a team successfully, the team has to be a settled unit. If it is constantly changing, then it will always be turbulent.Between the 1989 and 2005 Ashes, the relative number of caps given by England and Australia is stark, and highlights that one built a team with minimal change, whereas the other was frenetic and never settled. Guess which was more successful? You guessed it.In that period, England gave 90 players a new cap, beginning with Angus Fraser (#537) in 1989 and ending with Kevin Pietersen (#626) in 2005, according to ESPNcricinfo.Comparatively, Australia gave just 46 new caps out, beginning with Greg Campbell (#347) in 1989 and ending with the only debutant in the 2005 series Shaun Tait (#392). That is half the number England experimented with.Of course, the correlation does not always mean that fewer caps mean more success, but it is certainly arguable that making fewer changes to a team allows for a side to plan and execute more successfully. After all, if a side is unchanged, it means that it is a working formula, so why alter it?Clearly, change is used to try and remedy a failing formula, and too much change can exacerbate an existing problem. Certainly in this current Australian side, only Michael Clarke’s selection is guaranteed, whereas in years gone past, the team would pick itself (see Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn.)In the first home Test of 2009 versus West Indies, England handed out cap # 643 to Tim Bresnan. Since that moment, and up until the present day, England have got to # 655, which is just 12 more. Quite reasonable for a four-year period.Australia, from the same date, have had a much more torrid time. In the 2009 Ashes, cap #411 was handed to Graham Manou, Australia have now reached cap #434. That is 24 new caps in four years. Compared with England, that is like adding an extra team of players. To reinforce the point, not only have England been playing less number of new players, but the number of caps per new player is also important. England’s 13 newest debutants and the number of Tests they have played since 2009 have notched up 150 caps, with a third of that almost going to Jonathan Trott with 47.They are: Tim Bresnan (21), Graham Onions (9), Jonathan Trott (47), Michael Carberry (1), Steven Finn (23), James Tredwell (1), Eoin Morgan (16), Ajmal Shahzad (1), Samit Patel (5), Jonny Bairstow (12), James Taylor (2), Nick Compton (9) and the latest, Joe Root (10).When it comes to Australia, it is clear there are many more they are prepared to discard.Graham Manou (1), Clint McKay (1), Ryan Harris (15), Tim Paine (4), Steven Smith (11), Peter George (1), Xavier Doherty (4), Michael Beer (2), Usman Khawaja (9), Trent Copeland (3), Nathan Lyon (24), Shaun Marsh (7), Pat Cummins (1), James Pattinson (12), Mitchell Starc (11), David Warner (21), Ed Cowan (18), Matthew Wade (12), Rob Quiney (2), John Hastings (1), Jackson Bird (3), Moises Henriques (3), Glenn Maxwell (2), and last but not least, Ashton Agar (2).There are a lot of single figure scores here, much like an Australian batting card, and many of them were ‘victims’ of rotation policies and indeed untimely injuries.Yet it is inescapable that there are five players that have played a single Test, four that have played in two, three that have played in three, two in four, and only eight out of 24 that have gone past 10 caps.Australia have used 11 more players than England in the last four years, yet only two more when it comes to players with over 10 caps. Something is drastically wrong and this is not sustainable. Chopping and changing is simply no way to build a team. Tweaking is fine. England tweak. Australia are not giving their players a genuine chance to cement their place.Of course, there is no more Ponting or Warne, but Australia know that. They have to make do and give it their best shot, and the only way they can conceivably do this, is by setting out a plan, sticking with certain players and investing faith in them on a long-term basis. It is getting to the stage, whereby the Australians don’t even know their best order within the team, let alone who that team should comprise.England have not scored over 400 this series. They win games because they have a formula, and their line-up, although not firing, is less incompetent than Australia’s. They find a way through. Everyone knows their role, and everyone knows that whatever happens, it is highly unlikely they will get dropped.Settled teams are winning teams. Australia must try to be decisive and consistent. Pick a team, their best team, and stick with it for as long as possible. If you have a submission for Inbox, send it to us here, with “Inbox” in the subject line

Sanchez 2.0: Arsenal have looked at signing one of ‘the best in the world’

With around two weeks of the transfer window left to play, Arsenal are busy trying to conclude a deal for Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino.

Left-footed, capable of winning plenty of duels and possessing lovely crisp passing, he could finally be the man to fill a Granit Xhaka-shaped hole after he departed for Bayer Leverkusen last year.

Merino is one of the toughest midfielders in the game. No player won more aerial duels than he throughout Europe's top five leagues in 2023/24.

So, you can bet that Arsenal will be even tougher to break down, even tougher to stop once the Real Sociedad midfielder arrives in the forthcoming days.

That said, what's next on the agenda for the Gunners? A winger could still arrive, although with some of the price tags being mentioned, it would not be a surprise if they went without.

Arsenal's hunt for a winger

One of Mikel Arteta's primary targets at the start of the window was actually an international colleague of Merino's, Nico Williams.

The winger has been linked with a host of clubs this summer, namely Chelsea, but Arsenal have looked at him too following a dazzling Euro 2024 campaign.

Who are the alternatives? Well, GIVEMESPORTS's Dean Jones claimed a few days ago that Raphinha – a player the Gunners wanted before his move to Barcelona – would be attainable following a topsy-turvy time of it in Catalonia.

Jones also mentioned that Real Madrid's Rodrygo is someone they looked at signing. It's a move that could have legs if he gets caught up behind the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr next season.

As a result, it might not be one for this summer but it could be a deal to monitor moving forward.

How Rodrygo compares to Alexis Sanchez

You won't find many more underrated players on the continent than Rodrygo. Playing in the shadow of Vini Jr in Madrid, you can see why he's often forgotten about.

However, we simply cannot look past his numbers from last season. As Carlo Ancelotti's men won the Champions League yet again, he scored 17 goals and supplied nine assists. To put those numbers into context, only Bukayo Saka scored more for Arsenal in 2023/24.

On that evidence, it's hardly a surprise that the Madrid boss once labelled the Brazilian forward as one of "the best players in the world".

With that billing in mind, he'd likely cost a pretty penny but then Arsenal do need further attackers, specifically a right winger like Rodrygo to compete for minutes with Saka, a player who simply played far too much football last season.

So, why would this move evoke memories of Alexis Sanchez? Well, as analyst Ben Mattinson said on X, he could be "Alexis 2.0" due to the fact that he's "an under-appreciated man at a huge club who’d be the star at Arsenal."

Prior to signing for the Gunners, Sanchez starred for Barcelona but he was in the shadow of Lionel Messi and Neymar. Sound familiar? It's rather like the situation Rodrygo finds himself in at Madrid with Mbappe and Vini Jr.

That said, there are more comparisons than that. Their ability to make things happen out of nothing is rather alluring. They are tricky with the ball at their feet and they know how to beat their man with a clever piece of play. Here's what the numbers tell us.

So, while there is a notable difference in style when it comes to the way they progress the ball – Rodrygo doing so in terms of carrying and Sanchez doing so in the way he passes – the basic principle of the way they play the game is the same.

Both love taking the ball forward and making things happen for their side. They registered a similar number of carries into the final third, received a nearly identical number of progressive passes and completed a similar number of take-ons.

It's that unpredictable nature that separates the two and outlines why they both shone in LaLiga. Like the Madrid star, Sanchez did no wrong at Camp Nou, contributing 83 goals in 141 outings, but he simply had too much competition.

So, if he did join Arsenal in the future, Rodrygo could finally become a star man, rivalling the likes of Saka on the right and potentially playing ahead of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard on the left. Those two are mighty fine players but they're not Mbappe or Vinicius, are they?

Heather Knight, Sophia Dunkley seal series for England with final-over victory

Heather Knight marked her return from injury with a nerveless innings to help seal a nail-biting victory for England at Taunton and clinch their T20I series against New Zealand 2-1.Knight, playing her 200th game for England after missing the first two matches of this series with a hamstring problem, struck 42 off 36 balls to get her side most of the way to the target of 145 – although it took an equally calm Sophia Dunkley to see the hosts over the line with a boundary from the penultimate ball.England’s bowlers had contained New Zealand early before an unbroken stand of 36 from 14 balls between Brooke Halliday and Katey Martin took them to a competitive total. Leigh Kasperek’s three wickets put England in danger at 97 for 4 but Knight steadied the innings during partnerships worth 55 with Amy Jones and 40 with Dunkley.Heather Knight played a vital hand in the chase•Getty Images

Knight fell with eight runs needed but Dunkley found the ropes from an Amy Satterthwaite full toss with one ball to spare. The sight of Anya Shrubsole, who hadn’t played any part in the series, on crutches and in a moon boot before play was of concern for the home side ahead of announcing their squad on Saturday for the five-match ODI series with New Zealand starting in Bristol next week. She sprained her ankle at training on Tuesday and, having undergone scans, will be assessed by team medical staff in the coming days.Big three shackled
England’s attack kept a lid on New Zealand’s vaunted top order of Suzie Bates, making her 250th appearance for the White Ferns, Player of the Series Sophie Devine and Satterthwaite, all of whom have played more than 100 T20Is.They scored only seven fours between them and while Bates and Devine made starts there was to be no reprise of the former’s highest T20I score of 124 not out at the same ground against South Africa in the tri-series of 2018, nor of Devine’s rousing half-century which allowed New Zealand to level the series against England at Hove on Saturday.Tash Farrant missed a tough caught-and-bowled chance to dismiss Bates for 7 in the second over. But, after Bates swept her for four in front of square leg in the seventh over, Farrant responded with the next ball, sending leg stump cartwheeling with a fuller, straighter ball to dismiss Bates for 34 off 30.After a brief stoppage when all four floodlight towers went out due to an electrical fault, Sarah Glenn removed Satterthwaite, who picked out Katherine Brunt – back after pulling up sore from the first match – at long-on. When Sophie Ecclestone beat Devine’s attempted leg-side swipe with a ball that clattered into middle and leg, New Zealand were 90 for 3 in the 15th over. But the tourists managed to score 50 off the last four overs, thanks largely to Halliday and Martin, who struck three fours each, contributing 25 and 13 respectively to lift their side.Leigh Kasperek bagged two in two balls•Getty Images

Kasperek comes through
After a sedate start, Danni Wyatt struck Devine for four through midwicket and six over long-off in the third over to get the run chase moving. Jess Kerr struck in the next when Tammy Beaumont miscued to midwicket where Devine swallowed the catch. Wyatt carried on, however, helping herself to five more boundaries, including three on the trot off Kerr in the sixth over, through midwicket, cover and third as England finished the Powerplay 40 for 1 compared to New Zealand’s 37 without loss. But when Kasperek took two wickets in two balls, New Zealand were well and truly in the game. Expensive at Chelmsford, where she took 1 for 54, Kasperek claimed 3 for 25 from her four overs and ended the series as the leading wicket-taker with six at 16.50. She had Nat Sciver caught by Hayley Jensen at deep midwicket and then ended Wyatt’s enterprising knock of 35 off just 23 balls, pulling to deep square leg where Thamsyn Newton took the catch. Amy Jones survived the hat-trick ball and she joined Knight in rebuilding the England innings. After 10 overs, England were 66 for 3 compared to New Zealand’s 61 for 1. Jones struck back-to-back fours off Satterthwaite’s second over, the 12th of the innings, and Knight chimed in two balls later, punishing a full toss through backward square leg. But Kasperek returned to the attack in the 13th over and, after she was pulled for Jones’ fifth boundary, she struck two balls later, luring Jones into an attempted slog and finding an edge on to the stumps.Shining Knight
Knight made a welcome comeback, striking five fours on the way to her score, including a slog-sweep off Kasperek’s final over which bounced and cleared Newton at deep square leg and another off Devine through midwicket in the 19th. When she picked out Bates at mid-off from Devine’s penultimate ball, England needed eight off seven balls. Maia Bouchier, playing just her second match after making her international debut in the previous game, was bowled by Satterthwaite on the first ball of the final over, heaping the pressure on the hosts. But Brunt and Dunkley, who had held their nerve with a 92-run stand to defeat India, also at Taunton, during their ODI series earlier in the summer, did so again in truncated style. A single to Brunt followed by a hard-run two to Dunkley left England needing four off the last two balls. Dunkley needed just one, smashing a four through midwicket to seal the match and the series.

Spanish media deliver fresh Monday update on Rangers’ move for Joan Jordan

Rangers have increased their efforts to complete the signing of Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordan in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh transfer update from the Spanish press this week.

Rangers transfer news

Philippe Clement will no doubt be happy with the transfer business that the Gers have already completed this summer, with a host of new stars arriving at the club. That being said, further fresh faces are expected moving forward, with Goncalo Borges linked with a move to Ibrox.

Rangers have sent a proposal to the 23-year-old Porto attacker, who made 17 appearances in the Primeira Liga last season, although only one of those came from the start.

Meanwhile, Jordan has stood out as a primary transfer target throughout the summer window, with a move even reportedly agreed in some outlets.

The Spaniard still has three years remaining on his current deal at Sevilla, but he appears to be surplus to requirements there, hence his switch to Rangers potentially coming to fruition. Jordan has won the Europa League twice with the La Liga side, highlighting his credentials as a strong signing for Clement's men ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season.

Rangers make fresh proposal for 30-year-old

According to a new update from the Spanish newspapers on Monday morning [via Sport Witness], Rangers willl "push again" to sign Sevilla central midfielder Jordan this summer, but they claim a transfer is not as far along as other outlets reported in the last few days.

While the 30-year-old isn't believed to be close to sealing a move to Ibrox yet, the Gers want to sort a loan-to-buy option, with a permanent deal of €4m (£3.3m) at the end of this coming season. They have offered to pay 40% of his current salary during the next 12 months in order to get a deal over the line.

At this point, it would arguably be a surprise if Jordan didn't become a Rangers player in the coming weeks, certainly on loan, if not on a permanent basis. In fact, the loan-to-buy option could be the best outcome for Clement, in terms of having a season to assess the veteran midfielder and decide whether he is worth persevering with beyond the 2024/25 season.

While Jordan is a slightly ageing player, everything points towards him being an effective addition for Rangers, given his aforementioned success in a Sevilla shirt, and the fact that he is now a hugely experienced figure. He has made 219 appearances in La Liga in total, chipping in with 14 goals and 18 assists, showing that he is capable of delivering end product from the middle of the park.

Proposal submitted: Rangers make offer to sign £5k-p/w forward for Clement

He could link up with Vaclav Cerny at Ibrox.

ByBen Browning Jul 29, 2024

Added depth in the midfield is never a bad thing, as Rangers look to narrow the gap on Celtic next season, and there is no reason why Jordan can't come straight in as a key man from the off, having completed 88.4% of his passes in the league last term.

Man City could land their own Mbappe in deal for £100m sensation

Manchester City have failed to make any signings during the transfer window thus far, but Pep Guardiola wont be pushing the panic buttons just yet.

He led the club to their fourth straight Premier League title last season, therefore, the squad is in a pretty solid shape.

If the Spaniard wishes to add another Champions League title to his collection, however, might he go big on a few star signings ahead of the 2024/25 campaign?

Man City eye move for Real Madrid superstar

According to a report from TEAMtalk earlier this month, City are the only team with a genuine interest in signing Rodrygo from Real Madrid this summer.

Any potential move will cost Guardiola, however, as the La Liga champions will demand a fee in excess of £100m for the Brazilian to leave the club he joined in 2019.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

Arrivals of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick this summer mean competition for places will be extreme in the Spanish capital next term, which could suggest Rodrygo’s departure ahead of the new season.

Guardiola could sign his own version of the French sensation by swooping for Rodrygo in the next few weeks, as the pair offer similar qualities going forward.

How Rodrygo compares to Kylian Mbappé

Mbappé ended months of speculation by finally signing for Madrid at the start of June. The Frenchman could be the final piece of the jigsaw for Carlo Ancelotti’s side as they chase more history.

Will his arrival spark the end of things for Rodrygo, however? The Brazilian scored 17 goals and registered nine assists across 51 matches for the Spanish side last term and there is no doubt he could offer a wonderful attacking threat for Pep next term.

According to FBref, Mbappé is the third-most comparable player to the 23-year-old in Europe’s top five leagues, which suggests Guardiola could land a player with incredible talent in the final third.

Indeed, the duo registered similar statistics domestically with regard to assists (five vs seven), shots per 90 (1.32 vs 2.09), shot-creating actions per 90 (4.2 vs 4.04), goal-creating actions per 90 (0.52 vs 0.79) and touches in the attacking penalty area (206 vs 207), demonstrating how impressive the pair where from an attacking standpoint last season.

U23 talent scout Antonio Mango hailed Rodyrgo as “sensational” late last year, and he has emerged as one of the finest attacking players on the continent since moving from his homeland five years ago, with his finishing levels having even been dubbed "terrifyingly good" by journalist Sam Tighe.

Across 216 appearances for the current Champions League holders, the winger has registered 95 goal contributions – 54 goals and 41 assists – which works out as a goal involvement every 2.3 matches, a sublime statistic.

Man City chase "extraordinary" £205k-p/w star as potential Grealish upgrade

The Cityzens are keen to strengthen their ranks this summer.

ByBen Browning May 31, 2024

Numbers like this would make him an instant hit in a City team full of quality players on their own merit. The likes of Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden would help Rodrygo potentially improve on his figures from last season.

£100m may sound a lot on the surface, but it could be a wise move should Guardiola lure him to Manchester this summer.
