Dravid keeps boys' focus on World Cup knockouts ahead of IPL auction

As many as nine India Under-19 players currently at the World Cup in New Zealand are among 578 cricketers who will go under the hammer

Shashank Kishore in Queenstown25-Jan-2018It’s the week leading up to the IPL auction and as many as nine India Under-19 players currently at the World Cup in New Zealand are among 578 cricketers who will go under the hammer. That they have filtered through to the final list from an initial pool off 1122 players signifies interest from the franchises. But with the Under-19 World Cup in the knockout stage, India coach Rahul Dravid doesn’t want his boys to look beyond their immediate challenge: Bangladesh in the quarter-final.Among those in the auction pool from the current batch are captain Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Himanshu Rana, Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi, Arshdeep Singh and Harvik Desai.”There’s no point hiding from the fact that it is there. It is around the corner,” Dravid said of the auction that will be held in Bengaluru this weekend. “There’s no point living in the bubble and pretending it doesn’t exist. We do discuss it. We’ve spoken about what their focus should be and what their long-term goals are as compared to their short-term goals.”Following the conclusion of the Under-19 Challenger Trophy in November in Mumbai, a number of players were invited by Mumbai Indians for selection trials, only to be called back by the team management, keeping in mind their immediate priorities of playing in a World Cup. The team management was mindful of “players being distracted” by a number of other aspects like signing bat sponsorships and being acquired by talent management companies, in the build up to the tournament. With the auction dynamics being as they are, there is a possibility that a number of players could be auctioned for the kind of money they are yet to see. There is also a flipside, having to deal with a group of young players who might go unsold. Dravid, though, has prior experience of this, during the 2016 World Cup in Bangladesh, and has passed on a clear message: ‘One or two auctions won’t make or break players.'”The auction is not something the boys can control,” Dravid said. “One or two auctions won’t really have a long-term impact on their careers. There is an auction every year, but not every year will they have an opportunity to play for India in possibly a World Cup semi-final. That doesn’t come very often.”Dravid, who has been part of six auctions as a player and four as part of the management group, was aware of the challenges of handling a bunch of aspiring professionals who are still dealing with being in the limelight. For many, playing in the ongoing World Cup is their first experience of being on global television. Dravid, though, insisted the team was focused and had their priorities sorted.”I don’t feel worried about it. I think this group of guys are really focused on playing good cricket here,” he said. “I like the energy and the spirit in this team. We’ve been here for three weeks and we couldn’t have asked for better preparation from the boys. They’ve been superb. We talked about the auction once and we said let’s keep that out of our minds.”We’re not thinking past the next game against Bangladesh. We lost to them in the Asia Cup. We are aware of the fact that Bangladesh is a good team. We haven’t even looked at the rest of the draw. The focus is right now on doing well against Bangladesh. We had a week off, that was actually part of the challenge, managing at this age, boys are keen to play, at this age a week off can be a long time. So we had a day off and they got out a bit and relaxed. Today had a light session. Sometimes it’s just a question of hoping they don’t get too overexcited.”

Bavuma back with Lions after short Cobras stint

It’s the most favourable thing to do with my fiance in Johannesburg, says recently-engaged Test batsman

Firdose Moonda24-Apr-2018South Africa’s middle-order Test batsman Temba Bavuma has moved from Cape Cobras to the Highveld Lions ahead of the upcoming domestic season.Bavuma, originally from the Western Province, spent his entire professional career upcountry but moved back to the Cobras for the 2017-18 summer, even though he rarely played for the side owing to international commitments.”I made the decision to ply my trade for Cape Cobras to fulfill a childhood dream of donning the blue colours, but there have been developments in my personal life that have led me to reconsider that decision,” Bavuma said. “I recently got engaged and feel that with my fiancé in Johannesburg it’s the favourable thing to do.”Bavuma spent most of his time with the Cobras playing T20 cricket, where he scored 195 runs in 10 matches. He featured in just one first-class and one fifty-over fixture for the team. An opportunity to open the batting in List A cricket in a bid to push for an ODI berth, ESPNcricinfo understands, was one of the reasons for Bavuma to move to the Cobras last season. Now, it remains to be seen if Lions will have a spot for him up the order. However, with their trophy cabinet bare after a tough previous season, they will welcome a player of Bavuma’s experience.”We welcome Temba back with open arms. He is a player with special skills, experience and a star of his calibre is hard to find,” Greg Fredericks, Lions CEO said. “We did not have the best of seasons, so it is a step in the right direction to have him back in our system.”Bavuma’s decision also comes at a time when the six franchises are scrambling to secure player contracts that have been delayed because Cricket South Africa and the South African Cricketers’ Association are yet to agree upon a new MOU. Unless an interim agreement is formulated between both parties by the end of April, most of South Africa’s professional cricketers, including those from the national team, will be out of contracts. In March, CSA announced the names of the 18 players who they intend to contract, but those won’t come into effect without a binding MOU. Although the situation remains tense, a temporary agreement is expected to be put in place to avoid a player walkout and non-payment of May salaries.Since Bavuma is among those awarded a national contract, he is allowed to choose the domestic franchise he’d like to represent. The Lions, therefore, will not have to contract Bavuma. None of South Africa’s six franchises have been able to announce their contracted player lists and no other players have made public any intentions to change domestic teams.

Having led England for seven years with an impressive track record, including reaching the Euro 2020 final and achieving notable finishes in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the manager might step down from his position after Euro 2024. Southgate is already looking ahead and is preparing himself for a transition to club football. He revealed that Mourinho told him that after the England stint, he would be ready for any assignment and emphasised that no job in world football would intimidate him more than his current role with the Three Lions.

  • WHAT SOUTHGATE SAID

Speaking to Southgate said: "I remember talking to Jose (Mourinho) when he was at Man United and he said: 'You know, when you've done the role you're in now, you'll be able to do anything.' Really? I thought that was probably right, but seven years into it, it's definitely right."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Although Southgate expressed his desire to lead a Premier League club, his previous stint with Middlesbrough did not end on a sweet note as the club was relegated in 2009. Nonetheless, he remains defiant that the England role has equipped him in every way to lead to a top club in the future.

"Everybody would talk about Middlesbrough. 'Oh, he got Middlesbrough relegated'. Well, yeah, in the third year, we got relegated. But I had three years of Premier League management," he said.

"There isn't a job in world football that would intimidate or daunt you, having lived this one (England), frankly. You're not going to have any higher profile, you're not going to have any greater pressure, you're not going to have any more complex issues."

With Euro 2024 coming up fast, Southgate has only two more games to finalise his squad for the tournament. The 53-year-old's future post the tournament is up in the air and a positive result this summer could see him extend till the 2026 World Cup. Jones has been flirting around the edge of the selection, but has never been capped despite featuring prominently for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. Later on in the same interview, Jones also discussed the shocking departure of the German from the Merseyside club.

  • WHAT JONES SAID

Talking to the BBC, Jones said: "It’s not easy. The lads I’m against are doing well. Gareth and the staff have got a choice, but I think I’m doing enough. Everything around me is going well, so we’ll see."

On Klopp's announcement: "We were in the changing room, actually in the gym, and everyone was told we needed to come in at half 10. It was a bit of a strange one. We didn’t know what was going to be said, but I could feel it amongst the lads it was a little bit strange. He broke the news, it was tough to take. He’s his own man. You've got to respect he’s got his own things he wants to do with his family. He turned me from a boy to a man. I’m grateful for him, so are the teams, the fans, the city."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jones was handed his professional debut for Liverpool by the German coach in 2019 when the midfielder played against Wolves in the FA Cup third-round clash. Since then, the 23-year-old has become a mainstay in the Liverpool squad, however, the same has not been the case for him with his nation as he hasn't got a single cap for the Three Lions' senior team.

  • Inter running away with Serie A
  • Have lost just once in the league
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Inzaghi is enjoying a superb season at Inter, with the club top of Serie A, having lost just once. They sit 12 points clear of second-placed Juventus, and Inzaghi could subsequently be touted as a potential new manager for various clubs this summer; Barcelona and Liverpool are both set to undergo a managerial change with Xavi and Jurgen Klopp leaving, while Erik ten Hag is under intense pressure at Manchester United.

  • WHAT MAROTTA SAID

Marotta has confirmed plans to offer Inzaghi a new contract, telling : "The renewal of his contract? The fundamental thing is that Inzaghi enjoys the esteem of the club, the owners and the fans not only for what he has demonstrated, but also for his abilities, his behavior on and off the pitch and for the results obtained For our part, we want to continue with him.

"If we look at the rankings, the coaches of the top four all have contracts expiring in 2025 and we will address the issue of Inzaghi's renewal at the right time. Certainly, I repeat, Inzaghi enjoys our trust: He wants to stay with us, just as we want him to stay. The contract is a complement."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Inter have been in utterly remarkable form and have conceded just 12 goals in 26 games. They are also on a run of four straight wins in which they have scored four goals in each game. It is little surprise, as a result, that the club want to keep Inzaghi.

  • AT&T & MetLife were locked in an intense battle
  • Opportunities for commercial activations played a major role in the pick
  • Kardashian to continue playing a major role in collaboration with FIFA
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to the intense competition to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup final narrowed down to Dallas and New York City, with stadiums in Arlington, Texas (AT&T Stadium), and East Rutherford, New Jersey (MetLife Stadium), respectively, being the focal points. Dallas seemed poised for victory, but after FIFA president, Giani Infantino revealed that the city would host nine matches, the most among all host cities, it was obvious that their rivals had checkmated in the race to host the title decider of the showpiece event in 2026.

However, the unexpected decision to award the final to New York/New Jersey took many by surprise, indicating how close Dallas was to clinching the prestigious event. This choice underscored the intricate dynamics of FIFA politics, where apparent frontrunners may not always secure the bid.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

New York City presented compelling advantages from the outset, including its extensive public transportation network, a comparatively less controversial political climate than Texas, and a lucrative media market in a favourable time zone. The potential for commercial engagements around iconic landmarks further enhanced its appeal. MetLife Stadium's successful hosting of the Copa America Centenario final in 2016 also bolstered confidence in its capability to stage high-profile matches.

  • WHAT JERRY JONES, OWNER DALLAS COWBOYS, SAID

Speaking to Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, said: "It was a hell of a battle. We almost got there.”

Although New Jersey did bag the biggest prize New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy was uncertain until the last moment.

“I started a war game in my mind that that probably meant that they weren’t going to get the final,” Murphy said.

"I felt at that point that it was, more likely than not, that it would be us.”

‘Hilarity for miserable souls’ – Harry Kane backed to silence ‘mean-spirited’ critics of Bayern Munich transfer by shunning Premier League return & breaking trophy duck in Germany

  • England captain moved to Germany in 2023
  • In danger of missing out on major silverware
  • Expected to honour more than 12 months of deal
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

That may not happen this season, with the England captain enduring a testing debut campaign at the Allianz Arena. He has delivered on a personal front, registering 29 goals through 30 appearances, but is in serious danger of seeing elusive major silverware fall out of reach once more.

  • WHAT JORDAN SAID ABOUT KANE

Bayern have slipped off the Bundesliga title pace, and are trailing a Champions League last-16 encounter with Lazio, but Kane is being tipped to spend more than 12 months in Munich. Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has told the : “Anyone who looks at Bayern Munich’s woes as some form of retribution for Harry Kane upping sticks to Germany, where titles are apparently a given for his new club, is particularly mean-spirited. It is ironic given the upheaval, upset and lack of achievement at Tottenham that, after winning the title for 11 years in a row, it looks like Bayern are going to miss out this season. Cue much hilarity for miserable souls who seem to take delight in Kane’s failure to win a trophy. But, really, it is unfair to suggest Kane is complicit in Bayern falling short. He has done his job, scoring 25 goals in 22 games, so placing any criticism at his door is ridiculous. I’ve never been of the view that his lack of trophies reflects poorly on him. The guy scores 25-plus goals a season come rain or shine. That is the definition of a world-class striker and there are so few about. That’s why they command so much money and why they are so difficult to buy. Although Kane could be the perfect signing for any elite Premier League club looking for that elusive world-class striker, I don’t see him coming back to England this summer. If I were him I would want to stay until I had won something, otherwise what was the point in going?”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jordan went on to say, with Kane committing to a contract through to 2027: “In fact, a barren year would be even more reason to stay. The fact that the allegedly wonderful, revolutionary and innovative manager Thomas Tuchel will not be there is unlikely to affect his thinking either. Would his appetite to win trophies have been sated by winning something with an all-conquering Bayern this season? No. So why would he leave after one year when they haven’t won anything? At the time of his transfer I questioned whether a Bundesliga title would be meaningful to the England captain, but he made his choice and I don’t see him cutting and running just because Bayern are having a poor season. He went to Germany to win things and it is more likely than not that they will win something next year. They are certainly a better bet than any Premier League side who might want to sign him — apart from Manchester City. In the unlikely event that Bayern were happy to cash in, Kane would obviously interest England’s top clubs. Chelsea and Arsenal may have most need for his services and are perhaps able to meet his expectations. But a move to either of Tottenham’s arch-rivals is a flight of fancy and would be the ultimate legacy killer for a player who appears to pride himself on loyalty and integrity.”
