Sporting director names Tottenham as potential 2025 move for £25m star

da betsson: Tottenham Hotspur have been named as a possible destination for a £25 million player by a foreign club chief, who suggests that a 2025 transfer to north London is indeed possible.

Spurs finish summer transfer window with four signings totaling £113m

da bet7k: Manager Ange Postecoglou, technical director Johan Lange and chairman Daniel Levy and their wider recruitment team strengthened the Spurs squad in a variety of key areas over the summer window, spending a total of around £113 million on four key additions.

Timo Werner extended his loan deal with the Lilywhites to run through to the end of this Premier League season, with the new temporary agreement including a cheaper buy-option set at around £7.5 million.

After agreeing to keep the German, Spurs moved to sign 18-year-old Archie Gray from Leeds United for around £40 million, strengthening Postecoglou's midfield options with the arrival of an English sensation who starred at Elland Road in the Championship last season.

Their biggest marquee deal, a £65 million (including add-ons) move for striker Dominic Solanke, also provided Postecoglou with a proven Premier League goalscorer to lead the line this campaign – and he's expected to be a highly crucial player for them throughout 2024/2025.

Spurs ended their productive window with the swift and largely silent transfer of Wilson Odobert from Burnley, summing up their transfer business and not counting moves for youngsters Lucas Bergvall and South Korean wonderkid Min-hyeok Yang.

Levy and Lange also offloaded a host of players in that time, including a deadline day exit for midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, who completed a permanent switch back to former club Real Betis in La Liga.

Manu Fajardo names Tottenham as 2025 move for Johnny Cardoso

A condition of the agreement was first refusal on a potential future swoop for Betis star Johnny Cardoso. Spurs reportedly have opening rights to sign the 22-year-old USA international for around £25 million, which could be a possibility considering his impressive performances in the Spanish top flight lately.

Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso

Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo has publicly confirmed Tottenham's involvement in a potential future move for Cardoso, hinting that a summer move to N17 in 2025 is a possibility for the player.

"He has played an important role in terms of his rights for the future," said Fajardo in a Q&A with Marca this week. "Leaving next summer? It would depend on Tottenham and other offers that come in."

Last season, Cardoso averaged a match rating per 90 of 7.06 according to WhoScored, with the midfielder also bagging two assists and a goal in 17 league outings over 2023/2024.

Ben Foakes enters unfamiliar territory as England's first-choice wicketkeeper

Long-term understudy prepares for “different experience” as undisputed No. 1 in Caribbean

Ben Foakes has had to contend with high expectations ever since Alec Stewart, his director of cricket at Surrey, dubbed him “the best wicketkeeper in the world” five years ago and nothing has changed as he returns to the England Test set-up in the Caribbean. With Jos Buttler dropped after a difficult Ashes series, Jonny Bairstow viewed primarily as a batter and Sam Billings discarded after making his debut in Hobart, Foakes has the opportunity to ensconce himself as England’s No. 1 keeper over the next month. The Test team’s much-vaunted “reset” means there are no long-term guarantees but Andrew Strauss, the ECB’s interim managing director of men’s cricket, said that he expected Foakes to “get a decent run of things” behind the stumps.Strauss was fulsome in his praise of Foakes when the squad was announced two weeks ago. “[He’s] widely acknowledged as the best keeper in the world – certainly one of the top keepers in the world,” he said, “and a very, very good batsman in his own right.” He may only be eight Tests into a stop-start international career but Foakes already has a reputation to uphold.Stone, Archer join squad

Olly Stone has flown to Antigua with the England squad to continue his rehab from a strass fracture of the lower back.
Stone, the fast bowler who holds a pace-bowling contract with the ECB, admitted last year that he had considered retiring from the longer formats due to his history of serious injuries but retains his ambition to add to his three Test caps.
Jofra Archer is due to link up with the squad for the Barbados leg of the tour, having trained with the T20I squad during last month’s series.
Joe Root addressed the squad on Friday afternoon to discuss England’s plans for the series in the absence of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

“It’s definitely a different experience to be going in as No. 1,” Foakes said on Friday, the morning after England arrived in Antigua to prepare for the first Test on March 8. “Other than one spell for a couple of games I’ve not really been No. 1, so I’ve not experienced that too much.”I would say I’ve devoted my career to trying to play Test cricket. The T20 stuff is obviously kicking off, but Test cricket has always been my passion, so getting to this level and performing is 100% what I’ve invested my time in.”The spell Foakes referenced comprised only two games on England’s most recent Test tour of the Caribbean in early 2019, when he took the gloves in a side that featured Bairstow and Buttler following an impressive debut series in Sri Lanka. But after two defeats and a series tally of 55 runs in four innings – including a couple of freak dismissals – he was dropped for the third Test and did not play again until last year, when he filled in for three Tests in India when Buttler was rested.”I didn’t expect it [being dropped] at the time, coming off the back of the Sri Lanka tour,” Foakes said. “Being on cloud nine from that, I guess it’s fair to say at the time I thought I might get a slightly longer run [but] there was always that thing of the balance of the side niggling away.Like most of England’s batters, Foakes struggled with the bat in India last year•Pankaj Nangia/BCCI

“When you’re new into a team and you’re losing, I guess you are vulnerable. I guess it’s just about trying to make sure you’re performing whenever you get the opportunity. It is international sport. It’s obviously quite a tough environment and things like that do happen, so I completely understand how it could happen but I’m hoping to get a run this time.”He was then due to take the gloves against New Zealand at the start of the 2021 summer when Bairstow and Buttler had only recently returned from the IPL, but a freak injury ruled him out the series – and most of the summer. He has played only two first-class games since, one of them on England Lions’ tour to Australia when he made 12 and 73.”We’d just finished the game,” Foakes recalled. “We’d been in the field and I stepped on my heel in my socks and I slipped down into the splits. I thought I had cramp, sat down for a bit, tried to move it but couldn’t. I tried to walk on it and it kept collapsing, so I knew it was pretty gone.Related

Root embraces No. 3 berth in bid to revive England's Test fortunes

Root: 'No-one says this is the end for Anderson and Broad'

Campbell, Phillip in West Indies squad for first England Test

Broad on being dropped by England: 'It has hit me pretty hard'

Strauss: Anderson-Broad absence a chance to grow leadership options

“I guess everything hit at once. It was just a bunch of emotions: disappointment at missing out; you feel a bit guilty that you’ve let people down, let team-mates down. You’re desperate to be out there and then you worry if you’re going to come back OK. But the rehab team at Surrey were amazing and I feel my body is pretty strong now.”While Foakes’ skill with the gloves sets him apart from England’s other keeping options, he insisted: “I don’t just see myself as a keeper.” With that in mind, his tempo with the bat will be a point of interest: he scored fluently in his maiden series in Sri Lanka but struggled to pace his innings batting down the order on tough pitches in India last year, finishing the series with a strike rate of just 30.”It’s different,” he said. “Obviously with Surrey I bat at No. 5 so I get to just go out and bat. For England, if you’re batting at No. 7, I think certain situations may dictate you have to play a different way. I think the best way to go about it for me is just play my natural game, and if there are situations where I need to go outside that, then so be it. But not [by] trying to be someone that I’m not.”

Spurs target "sensational" £40m ace who’d help Maddison reach another level

da bet esporte: Tottenham Hotspur steadied the ship on Saturday afternoon with a thumping 4-0 win against Everton and, in turn, reminded the rest of the Premier League that at their free-flowing best, they can tear teams to pieces.

da mrbet: However, Ange Postecoglou's side don't play again until Sunday, so, like the rest of the league, their fans have shifted their focus to the transfer window's conclusion.

Thus far, the North Londoners have enjoyed a relatively fruitful summer, bringing in youngsters like Archie Gray and Wilson Odobert alongside established stars like Dominic Solanke, and while many clubs would now kick their feet up happy with their business, Daniel Levy and Co are reportedly keen to do more.

In fact, recent reports have touted a Premier League-proven midfielder for a move to N17 before 11pm tomorrow, a player who'd add some extra quality to the squad and potentially help James Maddison reach another level.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to transfers expert Dean Jones on the latest episode of the Ranks FC Podcast, Tottenham are interested in signing Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White.

Jones revealed that the Lilywhites are looking to bring in a player with "power" to play in the midfield and that Gibbs-White is "someone they like," even if they view him less as a traditional eight and more as someone adept at "breaking out" of midfield.

It's not mentioned how much the £80k-per-week ace could cost Spurs, but reports from earlier in the summer claimed that the Tricky Trees would demand an offer in excess of £40m.

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates for Nottingham Forest

It could be a complicated transfer to get over the line at this point in the window, but given Gibbs-White's quality, it's one worth pursuing, especially as he could help Maddison reach another level.

Why Gibbs-White would be a great signing for Maddison

Okay, so there are two main reasons that Gibbs-White could potentially help Maddison reach another level this season: his positional versatility and output.

Nottingham Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White

The reason that the latter would help the former Leicester City ace is simply that if the Forest man is playing alongside him, creating chances for the 27-year-old and finishing the chances he creates for him, his goal and assist tallies will naturally improve.

For example, despite playing in a rather lacklustre team last season, the Stafford-born dynamo scored six goals and provided ten assists in 42 appearances, equating to a goal involvement once every 2.62, lending credence to journalist Josh Bunting's description of the player as "sensational."

His versatility, on the other hand, could help the Lilywhites number ten in a couple of ways. The first is that, despite his experience playing in attacking midfield, his ability to play in central midfield and even out wide means he won't cannibalise the minutes his potential new teammate will be expecting this season.

The next reason is that his ability to fill in where needed should hopefully allow him to build up more of a relationship with the regular starters and, in turn, help improve the all-around effectiveness of the side.

Ultimately, while the fee is high, Gibbs-White's attacking ability combined with his positional versatility would see him become a very useful player at Tottenham and someone who could facilitate Maddison, thus helping him reach another level.

Rovman Powell's 51-ball century powers West Indies back into series lead

Banton, Salt battle for England but have no lasting answer to six-laden onslaught

Valkerie Baynes26-Jan-2022

A brutal 51-ball century from Rovman Powell blasted West Indies to a 20-run victory over England and a 2-1 lead in their five-match T20I series in Barbados.Powell muscled the hosts to 224 for 5 with an astonishing 107 off just 53 deliveries amid a 122-run stand for the third wicket with Nicholas Pooran, who was the perfect cornerman to Powell’s heavyweight destroyer with a sublimely crafted 70 off 43.In response, England’s inexperienced team – which had undergone no less than five changes through illness, injury and rotation – were left punch drunk until Tom Banton’s gallant half-century and an assured 57 from Phil Salt on his T20I debut kept them in the fight. But ultimately, the tourists had been left with too much to do.Powell’s powerMaking his first appearance of the series after being called up to bolster West Indies’ batting in place of allrounder Odean Smith, Powell did exactly what his side asked of him. Their line-up was hardly tested in pursuit of a paltry 104 in Saturday’s nine-wicket victory but stumbled badly on Sunday when they were forced to rely on ninth-wicket stand of 72 between Romario Shepherd and Akeal Hosein to get within two runs of victory. On this occasion, Powell and Pooran got the hosts firing.Powell’s 10 sixes were breath-taking as he clubbed England’s bowlers into the stands time and again, particularly down the ground with one of his efforts being measured at more than 100 metres. He brought up his fifty with a crunching effort off Liam Livingstone over deep extra cover and his only nervous moments appeared as his century came within reach of just one more hammer blow during a tight start to Reece Topley’s final over. But, having brought up his hundred with a two-run punch to square leg, he freed his arms once more to pump the ball back over the bowler’s head and clear the ropes for the tenth time.Powell fell two balls later, picking out Livingstone as he ran in from long-off but by that stage, he’d done irrevocable damage. Earlier, Pooran had chimed in with five sixes and four fours of his own and it wasn’t until the 17th over that Adil Rashid made the breakthrough that removed him, caught by Livingstone at long-on. When Pooran fell, he and Powell had lifted West Indies from 48 for 2 to 170 for 3.England’s babesMoeen Ali, standing in as captain for Eoin Morgan who was suffering from quadriceps soreness, won a rain-delayed toss and barely managed to recite the ins and outs for his team, which handed international debuts to George Garton and Harry Brook and a maiden T20I cap to Salt, who was part of the hastily assembled ODI squad that beat Pakistan 3-0 after a Covid outbreak in July. Also sitting out for England was an unwell Sam Billings, with Banton taking the wicketkeeping gloves, and Liam Dawson, who made way after Livingstone recovered sufficiently from the acid reflux problem which had kept him out of the first two games. Chris Jordan and Saqib Mahmood were left out as Tymal Mills returned to the attack.Livingstone bowled a particularly expensive over, which went for 26 as he mixed up his legspin and offspin to the right-hand/left-hand combination of Powell and Pooran. But he had Shai Hope caught behind and took both catches to dismiss Pooran and Powell, the latter almost slipping through his fingers as he went to ground running in from long-off.Garton had contributed to a bright start for England, having bowled Brandon King with a beauty on the top of off stump in the second over of the match in an excellent response to being struck for two boundaries within his first four balls. But then the Powell-Pooran main event began.Tom Banton cuts through point during his half-century•Getty Images

Banton, Salt step upJason Roy threatened at the start of England’s chase but when he, James Vince and Moeen all succumbed to some disciplined bowling and an improved performance in the field by West Indies, Banton stepped up to score a career-best 73 in his 12th T20I.Banton played a superb knock, setting the scene with a six off the second ball he faced – the sixth of the innings – and facing 39 deliveries all told. But he fell victim to West Indies captain Kieron Pollard, who had already removed Moeen for a duck in an excellent spell, when he was caught by Jason Holder. That was shortly after Livingstone, who appeared to be suffering some after-effects of his illness during his innings, fell to a sharp catch by Hosein backpedalling to extra cover and managing to hold on as he landed on his back. Hosein almost took a screamer at point that would have had Salt out for a duck, but the ball spilled as his arm hit the ground after a valiant leap.Playing on the island where had lived for six years as a youngster, Salt made the most of his chance, racing to his score off just 24 deliveries, including five sixes on a night when 31 in all were struck. With England needing 36 off the last six balls, Salt brought up his fifty with the first of back-to-back sixes off Shepherd, but he fell next ball, bowled round his legs and it was game over for England.
