Wolves could land dream Lemina replacement in PL “Swiss army knife”

da bet7k: If there is one thing Wolverhampton Wanderers need for their ongoing relegation battle, it is a sense of commitment to their fight for survival within their squad. That seems like something Vitor Pereira has looked to maintain during his short time at the club so far, and it was something former boss Gary O’Neil instilled.

da wazamba: In his first six games across all competitions, the Old Gold boss has overseen three wins, one draw and two losses. They were back-to-back defeats in the Premier League against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. It has been a solid start to his tenure at Molineux.

Agbadou

Almost all of the squad seems to be on board and ready to fight for survival. However, former club captain Mario Lemina seems destined to leave the West Midlands.

Lemina’s 2024/25 season

It has been a very strange season for Gabon international midfielder Lemina. He began the campaign as a key player for the Old Gold and has played 19 times across all competitions. At the beginning of the season, he was also club captain, although was stripped of that title.

During mid-December, O’Neil confirmed that the captaincy had been passed from Lemina to experienced full-back Nelson Semedo.

That came after a fight with West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen after their game at the London Stadium. O’Neil confirmed that “sparked the conversation” for a change in the captaincy.

Now, the West Midlands outfit might lose the midfielder altogether, in a situation that has escalated fairly quickly. After their 3-0 defeat away to Newcastle United, which Lemina was not part of, Pereira confirmed he “wants to leave” Molineux this month.

The new man in the hot seat at Wolves explained “with this energy and this mentality, I don’t need him”. It seems certain that the former captain will leave Molineux just one month after being relieved of his duties as skipper.

Wolves midfielder Mario Lemina.

Indeed, the Old Gold may well have their replacement in mind already and could make a move before the end of the January transfer window.

Wolves’ dream Lemina replacement

The player in question here is Chelsea youngster Renato Veiga, with reports earlier in the window suggesting that Wolves had enquired about a potential loan move, which was rebuffed by the Blues. Perhaps, however, going in for another approach would be a wise choice for the Old Gold.

The 21-year-old has been impressive for Enzo Maresca’s side so far this term, having made 18 appearances across all competitions for the Blues.

He has scored twice and grabbed one assist, registering a goal and assist against Gent in the Conference League.

He has clearly made a lasting impression on Blues fans so far, with Alex Goldberg full of praise for the Portuguese star. He explained that “anything he touches turns to gold”, a metaphor of course, but still something that shows just how well he has played.

One of the biggest advantages of signing Veiga would be the fact Wolves have something of a utility man in their squad. Described as a “Swiss army knife” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, he can play in multiple positions in defence and midfield.

Renato Veiga for Chelsea.

Indeed, this certainly rings true when looking at the positions he played for former club Basel, and, of course, Chelsea. The Portuguese starlet has been trusted across the defence, at full-back and centre-back, and in the midfield.

This must be an appealing factor for Wolves, and one reason why Pereira might want to sign his countryman. Not only would they be bringing in a Lemina replacement in midfield, but also someone who can play at left centre-back in his back three system.

This certainly seems like the perfect deal for Wolves. It might be tough to convince Chelsea to part ways with their versatile star, but if it is possible, then it could be a fantastic piece of business for the Old Gold.

David and Green settle into 'really flexible' roles after taking Mumbai Indians to their first win

“Knowing how much confidence I got out of that game, I think it will be even more so for Cam,” David says of the win over Delhi Capitals

Matt Roller15-Apr-20232:17

Can David and Green be the new Pollard and Hardik?

Tim David and Cameron Green posed for a photo under the floodlights at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla on Monday night after dragging Mumbai Indians over the line to secure their first win of IPL 2023. David posted it on Instagram with a self-effacing caption: “If you need 5 off 6, we are your men.”It was not a pretty finish, but their unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership worth 30 in 3.1 overs proved just enough to deny Anrich Nortje, who bowled a series of searing yorkers, to clinch Mumbai Indians’ first points of the season. More pertinently, ahead of Sunday afternoon’s fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders, it served as a significant confidence boost for a team that fell to heavy defeats in their first two games.

“Chasing and trying to finish off the game the other night was tough,” David said on Saturday evening, after netting at the Wankhede Stadium. “They bowled a really good last couple of overs in tough batting conditions, so it was great to have that partnership with Greeny and get us over the line. For me, knowing how much confidence I got out of that game, I think it will be even more so for Cam.”Mumbai made a conscious effort to get Green, their INR 17.5 crore (A$ 3.2m approx.) auction purchase, involved in Monday’s game early on, throwing him the ball for the third over of Capitals’ innings. He went wicketless, finishing with 0 for 30 in his three overs, and was then deployed in a new role with the bat as he shuffled down to No. 6 after starting the season at No. 3.It appears that his role is likely to remain flexible throughout the season. “It actually wasn’t planned,” David said of his compatriot’s role change. “The way we feel like, we line up, we’re just going to go with whoever is best matched for that situation at the time.”We feel like we’ve got a really powerful middle order along with obviously the top-order guys who are settled. It’s something that we’ve spoken about as a team: we’re just going to be really flexible, and we’re all prepared to play our role for the team.”David and Green attended the same prestigious school, Scotch College, in Perth’s western suburbs (albeit three years apart) and have played together professionally before: first for Perth Scorchers in the BBL; more recently in Australia’s T20I team. Now, they are team-mates in Mumbai, tasked with restoring the IPL’s most successful franchise to past glories after winning the wooden spoon last year. Green spent Saturday’s net session muscling straight sixes towards the Wankhede’s press box, and David suggested his eight-ball cameo against Capitals would help him – and Mumbai Indians – going forward.”It’s his first couple of games in the IPL,” David said. “It can be different, it can be eye-opening, those first few games coming in as a well-regarded international player. It’s awesome for him, and I know we’re all looking forward to seeing what he can do over this season for us.”We’re very confident that when we play our best, we’re going to score big scores. We’ve got power right through the order. We’re excited, because we know that we’ve got seven or eight guys that throughout the course of the season can play match-winning knocks.”

Enquiry made: Aston Villa target £263k-p/w "monster" who’d be Coutinho 2.0

da esoccer bet: Aston Villa opened their account in the Premier League for 2025 with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City, which would have been a welcome result come full-time after drawing their final clash of 2024 in the league.

da roleta: But, the game would have felt far nervier for the Villans fans watching on when you consider their side’s leakiness reared its ugly head once more, having conceded to a Foxes team who had just two shots on target all afternoon and are lingering near the foot of the division.

Aston Villa manager UnaiEmery

Therefore, Emery must surely be using this January transfer window as a way to bolster his options defensively, with this high profile loan signing now rumoured.

Aston Villa enquire about wantaway defender

As per a report by French outlet L’Equipe, Villa have now enquired about signing wantaway Paris St. Germain centre-back Milan Skriniar this month on loan, with the Slovakian defender wanting to leave PSG due to a lack of first-team chances.

Villa are joined by Tottenham Hotspur in their pursuit of the ex-Inter Milan brute according to the report, as Ange Postecoglou attempts to solve his side’s own defensive woes, with Skriniar reportedly keen on playing in the Premier League in the near future away from the French capital.

There will also likely be an option for Emery’s men to make the deal permanent, with a hope that the 6 foot 2 star could be another loan success for Villa away from a major titan like Philippe Coutinho proved to be, before falling down the pecking order in the West Midlands when he joined the club for good from Barcelona.

Why Skriniar could be Coutinho 2.0

Obviously, in the minds of Villa fans now, the deal to bring in the Brazilian attacking midfielder was a major flop, considering the expensive 32-year-old has since been discarded to Vasco De Gama on loan.

But, once upon a time, the ex-Liverpool man was a loved figure by all at Villa Park, with five goals and three assists picked up during his debut campaign after arriving from Barcelona on an initial temporary deal in January 2022.

With hindsight now very much on their side, the Villans might not have subsequently forked out £17m though, with Coutinho only managing one more goal contribution since.

Emery will just pray that Skriniar can come in and be similarly impactful in the short-term – away from worrying about issues regarding tieing him down to a permanent stay – with Villa in dire need of more resolute bodies defensively with Pau Torres now sidelined and their record at the back this season not being particularly rosy.

By three goals more, Villa have conceded the most goals in the current top ten of the Premier League at a worrying 32, with the injury-stricken Torres only keeping two clean sheets from 18 top-flight outings.

Therefore, Skriniar could come to the rescue to help Emery’s men shut up shop more effectively, having actually kept a clean sheet on his last appearance for PSG in Ligue 1 before pushing for a move away.

At the peak of his powers in the Serie A too, Skriniar would make his all defensive hard work look easy, with the 2021/22 season for Inter seeing him average a cool and composed 92% pass accuracy per league contest, whilst also showing off his fierce approach aerially by winning 3.9 duels on average.

Italian football writer Jerry Mancini would even label the Slovak as “incredible” when he was regularly battling away at Inter, with the well-thought-of defender – who journalist Siavoush Fallahi also previously dubbed a “monster” – a presence that could be transformative for a ropey Villa defence.

Of course, this could all prove to be too good to be true much like Coutinho – with the defender’s steep £263k-per-week salary an easy target for concern – but Villa might well deem snapping up this fresh centre-back as a risk worth taking.

Imagine him & Orjasaeter: Celtic plotting talks to sign "unique" star

da bet sport: Celtic ran out comfortable winners yet again in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday as they secured a 4-0 win over St Johnstone in their last game of the year.

da brwin: The Hoops will now head into 2025 at the top of the division, 14 points clear of Rangers in second place, and are on course to seal a fourth straight title.

Brendan Rodgers’ side also face the Gers in their first game of the New Year on Thursday at Ibrox, which means that they have a chance to move 17 points clear of their Glasgow rivals.

The Northern Irish head coach has enjoyed plenty of success since his return to Parkhead ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, winning the Premiership title, the SFA Cup, and the League Cup so far.

His team are also on course to qualify for the play-off stage of the Champions League, with one defeat in six matches thus far, ahead of the final two games of the league phase.

Despite all of the team’s success, Rodgers is still looking to improve his squad when the January transfer window opens for business later this week.

Celtic plotting talks with Premier League ace

According to Football Insider, Celtic are plotting talks with Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney to secure a pre-contract deal for the Scottish defender.

The report claims that the Rodgers ‘working’ on a move to bring the Scotland international back to Parkhead on a free trransfer at the end of the season, as his current contract with the Gunners is due to expire next summer.

Due to his deal running down, Celtic are able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with the left-footed star when the January transfer window opens for business, which would then see him officially link up with Rodgers and his squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The outlet adds that Tierney is interested in returning to Glasgow for a second spell with the Hoops and would be prepared to reject offers from other clubs in Europe to make the move, with Football Insider revealing that there are several other sides in the mix to land his signature.

It also claims that Arsenal would be open to allowing him to leave on loan for the second half of the season, before a free transfer in the summer, and this means that the Bhoys could secure a pre-contract deal in January whilst also landing him on loan in the short-term.

Tierney could come in as an excellent addition to the team in the winter window, if they sign him on loan initially, and as a fantastic partner for another potential signing next month – Sondre Orjasaeter.

Why Celtic should sign Sondre Orjasaeter

Celtic are reportedly keen to add another left winger to the group ahead of the second half of the season and have been linked with an interest in Sarpsborg forward Sondre Orjasaeter, who could come in to provide competition in the attacking areas for Rodgers.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

He is a 21-year-old attacker who typically plays on the left flank and looks to cut inside onto his right foot to provide quality in the final third, as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side.

The Norway U21 international is particularly impressive at creating high-quality chances for his teammates when coming infield on his favoured foot, as shown by his impressive form for Sarpsborg in the Eliteserien during the 2024 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Orjasaeter could come in as a big upgrade on Daizen Maeda from a creative perspective, as he averages more assists, ‘big chances’ created, and dribbles per game.

Now, Celtic could revamp their left-hand side in January by swooping to sign the Norwegian starlet and bringing in Tierney to play behind him in the left-back position.

The Scottish full-back has the attacking potential to be the perfect full-back for the 21-year-old winger, and they could link-up to devastating effect in the final third.

Why Kieran Tierney is perfect for Sondre Orjasaeter

Orjasaeter, as explained earlier, wants to cut inside onto his right foot from the left wing to cause problems at the top end of the pitch, and that makes him the perfect winger for an overlapping full-back.

The Norwegian maestro coming infield can drag the opposition right-back inside and create the space for Tierney to be able to bomb on and deliver crosses on the left flank, giving the opposing a defence a multitude of problems to solve at once.

During his first spell with the Hoops, the Scotland international delivered 37 assists in 170 matches in all competitions for the club, which is an average of one every 3.14. Whereas Greg Taylor has assisted 30 in 196 games for Celtic, which suggests that Tierney could come in to offer more creativity from a left-back position.

This means that the Arsenal outcast could be the perfect signing alongside Orjasaeter, if the Hoops can land both of them, to provide that overlapping threat that would combine well with the winger’s inclination to come inside.

As you can see in the table above, Tierney also showcased his solid defensive work whilst on loan with Real Sociedad in LaLiga during the 2023/24 campaign.

The experienced ace, who was once hailed as a “unique” talent by Rodgers, has the physical qualities to win the majority of his duels and make multiple defensive interventions per match to maintain Celtic’s defensive strength.

However, his first spell in Glasgow suggests that the defender also has the quality in possession to be a difference-maker in the final third with his assists from left-back, which is why he could be an excellent addition and the perfect signing alongside Orjasaeter next month.

Rodgers can drop Taylor with Jota-esque Celtic deal for "top-notch" ace

Celtic could move on from Greg Taylor by securing this in-house deal in January.

All-woman panel of match officials for 2023 Women's T20 WC

Since then, we have seen global stars descend on the Hundred, which also appears to be fast-tracking the next generation, the first edition of the Women’s CPL and the establishment of the Women’s Premier League, which is set to begin shortly after this tournament. For the first time at a global ICC event, an all-female panel of umpires and match referees will officiate.Where is this Women’s T20 World Cup being played? The tournament will be played in South Africa, which has just staged the inaugural Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, won by India. The majority of matches, including both semi-finals and the final, will be played at Newlands, the jewel of the country’s stadia in Cape Town with Table Mountain as a breath-taking backdrop. A clutch of games will be staged at the picturesque Boland Park in Paarl, less than an hour’s drive north-east, and five fixtures will be held in the space of seven days at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.Who’s playing, and what are the key dates? There will be 10 teams taking part, split into two groups. Group A consists of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Group B will feature England, India, Pakistan, West Indies and Ireland. Each team plays the other four in their group once. The top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals on February 23 and 24. The final is scheduled for February 26, with a reserve day available on February 27.South Africa directly qualified as hosts and were joined automatically by the top seven teams in the ICC’s world rankings as of November 30, 2021. That left 37 nations to battle for the remaining two places through a series of qualifiers from which Bangladesh and Ireland emerged triumphant. Thailand, who featured in 2020, missed out.Australia are the favourites, right? As much as things may have changed, the more they’ve stayed the same, with Australia favourites to defend their crown and become dual holders of the 50-over and T20 world titles. They have lost just one of their past 17 completed T20Is, when the home side clinched the Super Over in the second of their five-match series in India in December, and went undefeated through their victorious Commonwealth Games campaign. What about India, England and the others? Any challengers?India pushed Australia in the contest for Commonwealth gold with Australia prevailing by nine runs. India’s Under-19s have just delivered the country’s first World Cup in women’s cricket with a side captained by Shafali Verma and including wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, both of whom will now join the senior squad hoping to ride their wave of their success.England, who played second-fiddle at last year’s ODI World Cup, have the quality to contend and have welcomed back captain Heather Knight from a hip injury. They hope promising young allrounder Alice Capsey will have recovered well enough from a broken collarbone to be a factor.New Zealand captain Sophie Devine is battling a foot stress fracture and, while South Africa’s management have targeted a berth in the final, they must get there without Dane van Niekerk, who failed to meet their fitness criteria and was controversially left out.Despite the progress being made, this event is likely to keep a spotlight trained on the gulf between the haves and have-nots, with the best-funded nations still a long way ahead. West Indies’ form has dropped off dramatically since winning the 2016 title, Pakistan offered little competition for Australia in their recent series and Sri Lanka haven’t played a T20I since the Asia Cup final loss to India in October.
